Listening to Far and Away on that album now but Hedwig's Theme is more classical sounding, maybe he's trying to please the classical elitists The two Cinema Serenade albums were similar in conception. In those cases though, it was more oriented to make Perlman's characteristic cantabile (i.e. "singable") tone shine through. All the pieces chosen for the arrangements were purposefully lyrical and very tuneful. The Mutter project seems instead focused more on the virtuosic side, as JW repurposed various pieces as sort of capriccios and impromptus for soloist and orchestra (keep also in mind that this project is a result of Mutter asking JW for many years to write a Korngold-styled concerto for her). In my humble opinion, with these kind of projects there is always that air of wanting to "dignify" film music to an audience not keen on the repertoire, something amplified by the fact that we have a major international classical soloist and the biggest classical music label involved. However, the risk is to widen the so-called "inferiority complex" of film music/film composers toward the classical elitists instead of bring them closer to each other. However, I don't worry too much anymore about these very 20th-century-like arguments--Williams is openly and peacefully accepted in the pantheon of the great composers of our times by and large from everyone. We all know that Mutter was nagging JW to write something specific for her, but as far as I know it has never been revealed exactly what she requested. I, and probably many others, guessed that what she wanted was a Korngold-esque concerto, based on film themes, but has that ever been confirmed? I, and probably many others, guessed that what she wanted was a Korngold-esque concerto, based on film themes, but has that ever been confirmed? Yes, it was an interview with a German paper from several years ago; she talked about liking to perform new pieces written for her and one of her dreams was having a full concerto for her by John Williams based on his film themes. She didn't mention Korngold, but it was clear from her wording that she was requesting something along those lines. A few years later, there was another interview with Andre Previn, where he said that Mutter asked Williams to write something for her multiple times and, according to Previn, at one point JW backed off saying "Sorry, but I don't do that kind of thing" (or something along those lines). Of course this could be urban myth, I tend to believe JW backed off (as he usually does with anyone who requests a new piece from him) because of film commitments and other previous engagements he might have had at that time. Thanks for the additional info! Do you happen to have a link or the title to the German interview? I'm familiar with the (infamous) Previn interview. I don't find the claim from Previn surprising at all - that JW didn't want to write a concerto based on his own film themes - since none of JW's substantial concert works really crosses the line into his film music territory. Anyway, now that Mutter and JW have established a good working relationship, it's probably more likely than ever that such a concerto could materialize! TownerFan 4,991
No, I don't remember which magazine/newspaper was, sorry... I think it was from 2010 or perhaps even before. I have a hunch that, once he's done with Episode IX, JW will dedicate more time to music for the concert stage. _deleted_ and crumbs
