This cannot end well for Elfman. If the allegations are true in their entirety, we have just witnessed the end of his career.
I would be very surprised if this was the end of his career. There are people still working in Hollywood with far more egregious accusations.- Naïve Old Fart and Brónach

QuoteDid you and Andrew draw on the work of any film composers for this?
Our references were everyone from John Williams, Nino Rota, Carter Burwell, all the greats. I also like Elmer Bernstein’s “Ghostbusters” score, and and “Working Girl” and “Heaven Can Wait” and other things from the late ‘70s and ‘80s. Some things weren’t necessarily references, like Maurice Jarre and Thomas Newman, that balance synthesizers and orchestra in this really lovely way. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Yamaha CS-80 [1970s-era synthesizer] but we actually got one into this room — it was only moved out just a few days ago, it’s such a titan it took up like the entire room. All those old synthesizers have kind of become the domain of “Stranger Things” type music — you know, eerie and windy, but there’s also a rich, emotive, very wide thing that it can do. Greta also loves orchestral music and classic scores, so it was about balancing the two sounds.

Listening to Greta Gerwig on Edith Bowman’s podcast. No mention of Desplat as far as I can hear. The Mark Ronson stuff (I think) that they play in the interview actually doesn’t sound too bad. It sounds like something Desplat could have written easily. It seems they wanted more connection between the songs in the movie and the score.

The brass in Battle of Syracuse from 00:52 to 1:04 is fantastic. I can't stop thinking about it.
I would love to hear a Abbey Road LSO recording of that whole track -
Was half expecting a shark to appear at the beginning of Water Ballet and the two-note Jaws theme to start.

The trumpet solo at 1.09 in Auction at Hotel L'Atlantique sounds like an upbeat version of Voller's theme. Am I correct in this observation?

I desperately want to hear a clean version of the NYC chase music. It just sounds so different to the rest of the score. I’d be really interested to hear about that choice.

I finally watched the film.
I was really enjoying it… until the end. The film just kind of wraps up very quickly.
I have a feeling they planned for Indy to stay in the past and sort of become part of history himself, then the Mouse freaked out and reshot it (the background looked very fake in some of those Syracuse scenes).

The only thing about the soundtrack that genuinely irritates me is the awkward edit in Germany, 1944. It just seems so unnecessary.

There's lots of discussion on FSM about issues with the sound on this release but I haven't noticed anyone here mention it. I plan to listen tomorrow but was wondering if anyone here had any comments about this.
There is a weird kind of thumping sound at the beginning of the Prologue (1.24). But I can only hear it with my headphones. -

Yes, that is indeed great but that doesn't make the music any better. I ain't giving anyone, including John Williams, a participation trophy! And I'm sure he wouldn't want to be pandered to either.... not say you are. Your thought was beautiful and I think we all appreciate the fact that he is still with us doing what he does best!-Erik-
True, but I have an overall positive impression of the music. I will happily pander to JW! His music has helped me through many difficult times. He’s the closest I have to a “hero”.- Remco and Pieter Boelen

I know it’s mentioned a lot, but I’m not sure we really recognise how incredible it is that this music was written and mostly conducted by a 90 year old man. Most people his age are either dead or not eating solid foods. I know we have some legitimate complaints about the album presentation, use of older themes etc, but how many other 90 year olds are active and working, let alone writing a cue like “To Athens”. It is an astonishing achievement whatever you think of the soundtrack. Just listen to the orchestrations in “Tuk Tuk to Tangiers”. A man who statistically should be dead sat down at his piano and came up with that. I remember back in 2015 when we all freaked out because he’d pulled out of writing music for Bridge of Spies and 8 years later he’s conducting at the premiere of the 5th Indiana Jones movie. Blessed we be.

So, 4th time I'm listening to this now..
With this ost the following paradox happens with me:
Each time I hear it, I like it less (usually the opposite happens).
I don't know, the Indiana Jones music is overly saturated, and as much as I love John Williams, I will stick to my opinion that this was superfluous.
I apologize to the fans of this soundtrack.
It’s fascinating how these things work, because for it me it was the complete opposite!- Tydirium and GerateWohl

1.20 in Germany, 1944 is the reason I have no problem with re-recording pieces from other films. That lower brass sounds incredible.

I’m glad the Tuk Tuk music remains clean and coherent on the album. I just watched the leaked clip from a few months ago and the album cue only seems to cover the first few minutes of the chase. The rest of the chase is a mish mash of original music and tracking of older music. This is one of the occasions where a complete cue wouldn’t do much for me, so I agree with JW’s choice here. It really is a great cue. A 90 year old man writing something with such energy and complexity.

Has JW ever created so many variations on one theme in a score before? I don´t think even Rey´s Theme was showcased this much.

Also, Tuk Tuk is definitely better heard in full form than in a clip covered in dialogue and fx. It's basically a far more exciting extended treatment of Helena's theme.
I am also glad they didn´t shoehorn in the quotes from other films into the album recording.
