YoYoMama 48
I'm torn... I really want to, but I want to see it in the context of the film. HOWEVER, every single Star Wars movie release for me has been a musical introduction first, followed by the first viewing of the film. I reminisce about the days of listening to the TPM soundtrack over and over and how wonderful it was to see images attached to it later. For me the music has always existed on it's own, as Star Wars has kind of been like a big music video for John Williams with dialogue and SFX. What will you do when it leaks? It was especially shitty for TFA as the intial negativity decreased my excitement for the film and score and all of the youtube leaks were low quality half-tempo rips. gkgyver 1,646
There is obsession and there is admiration. None of us were here if we didn't admire Williams. But the degree to which some brains here seem to be occupied with the most trivial thing, like having a 30 seconds clip of music from a commercial on a constant loop to wonder if it's Williams or not, or analyzing if Williams would use names of places for concert suites or not, I find that weird, to be honest. I find it hard to believe that this is normal because if a soundtrack takes that much of your mind, and with some people to the point where criticism towards the music is taken as personal offense, there is a certain implication there that not much else is going on there around you. I'm gonna listen to the soundtrack, I'll most likely enjoy it, I look forward to it, but seriously, I think if you as an adult had/have the pleasure of feeling the joy and enthusiasm of Family, having work that fulfills you, and everything around it, soundtrack news should add a bit to the day, not make it. I'm not any less of a film music fan than 15 years ago, but I don't obsess over this stuff anymore because I don't think it adds or detracts one bit from my enjoyment. And I know I may sound a bit like a dick, but looking at some people that have already been here since I first joined XX years ago, or people that have been here for years, they haven't changed a bit. Setreal 1
Being somewhat familiar with the music before I see the film increases my enjoyment of the movie substantially. It's interesting comparing people's reactions to TFA music initially vs. after a few times through the soundtrack or movie. I remember being disappointed that some of the first reviewers for TFA weren't overly impressed by the score. I ended up loving the music and am eagerly anticipating the last jedi soundtrack. Fully expect to hear some more Jedi Steps, maybe a new Rey/Luke theme, etc. There might be some minor spoilers that us music nerds would pick up on by listening to the soundtrack early - ie, if we hear Yoda's theme in the middle somewhere and realize we're going to get Yoda Force Ghost somewhere- but it won't be anything that would truly spoil the movie. Oh, you're offended by something I wrote on an internet message Board, and now you're yelling at me on an internet message board, oh no! I'd wager that a lot of people here are musicians of a vast variety of skill and experience, including myself, and John Williams/Star Wars music is what initially got a lot of us interested in classical music and things like orchestration, the power of properly constructed leitmotifs, and the beautiful marriage of music and film. It even set some of us down a career path in the industry similar to how a lot of well known directors like James Cameron (who was a mere truck driver when he first saw Star Wars) headed straight to Hollywood to fulfill their dreams. Some of us owe quite a lot to JW and his music. 8 hours ago, gkgyver said: There is obsession and there is admiration. To musicians like us it's not just admiration but INSPIRATION, which is the fuel that lights the fire inside artists to create more awesome works of art. Without it, we're are almost useless. There's not a single artist that has ever existed who was not heavily inspired by other artists, some to the point of pure obsession admittedly. That is what drives us to become better at what we do. To imply that it is unhealthy in any way reveals that you have a very narrow understanding of what music does for people and how it changes people's lives almost always for the better. What you're seeing on this message board is people putting into mere words how inspired they are by his music, and one might never see that magic come to life when the inspiration grows into more than just a feeling, evolving into it's own fully-formed creation, something a message board like this can't fully encompass. You are only seeing a shade of what obsession has to offer. That's one of the most beautiful parts of being human and having a brain. Us musicians obsess over this music because it literally makes us better at what we do by refining our tastes and expanding our horizons. We obsess over his orchestration and writing style, reading between the lines to study how he created the sounds he did, unlocking the mystery of his talent to better our own. This is what the best musicians have always done and will continue to do for ages. We obsess to the point of picking up our first instrument to learn how to play our favorite themes, obsessing over it until we perform it correctly, which opens more doors than it closes. We obsess over it to the point of downloading PDF's of his hand written scores to study how he layers instruments over each other, learning how to mimic and expand on certain sounds to create our own. John Williams is the reason I spent the past twenty years studying classical piano, classical orchestration and theory, and jazz improvisation. I wanted to be as talented as he is, and I owe it to my 5 year old self sitting down to listen to the Star Wars score for the first time, placed in front of me by my dad who was also obsessed with the music (and still is), knowing from that point on exactly what I wanted to accomplish in life. It represents the bond that my dad and I have shared for as long as I can remember, and to put a dismissive spin on it by calling it obsessive and sad is not only obtuse but frankly quite ignorant and shallow. Most people here share very similar experiences, which is why most of us are here in the first place to rejoice in what we obsess over. Art is obsession, and it makes me gravely sad that some people aren't creative enough to understand that.
