aviazn 273
Gotta say, I appreciated the entire casino sequence and music so much for actually being willing to step out and try to create a unique planet for the Star Wars universe. It's not as memorable as Cloud City, but after the incredible genericness of all the TFA locales, it was great to see something new.
zoltan_902 143
First 20 seconds of "The Faviers" are not only the most remarkable thing I can remember from watching the movie the first time, but the only really interesting thing in the entirely OST album for me. Rose's theme is tender and warm, but far too similar to 'Anakin's Theme', and only reminded me of that whenever it appeared in the film.
Quintus 5,576
I haven't had chance to listen to this away from the movie yet, but what I heard during it was a mix of standard Williams Starwarsisms which I'd need to take more time to study and 'figure out'. It sounded like a very busy score, wall to wall in the film, pretty much omnipresent throughout it. Disappointingly though I did not pick up on any semblance of the storytelling and cathartic arc I expect from this composer. I may be wrong, but I'm inclined to lay the blame for this on the film production, once again. Why modern filmmakers don't seem to fully understand and respect film music these days, I do not know. Sure, rejig your scenes and make your necessary structural alterations as they become required; but you do not under any circumstances make changes to a John Williams score, man. Work around him, he's your film's foundation. I will say this: when the rebels showed up in the space battle at the beginning of the film and The Resistance theme heralded their arrival right on cue with a new, gutsy permutation to boot... well, for the briefest of moments I had tears in my eyes. Definitely a concert version. At no point in the movie does the music bounce between Rose's theme and that other fanfare type theme like in that track. That other theme represents Luke and his training of Rey. So it is a concert version of the two themes. To be honest, the OST would have been better of both themes got their own concert arrangement. Damien F 1,830
Just saw the film. A few quick non spoiler thoughts: A statement of Poe's theme similar to I can Fly Anything is microedited from the opening track. Can't remember if the track stops before his theme appears or if it is an actual edit. There are a few more statements of Rey's theme in the movie that aren't on the album however most aren't too different to what we already have. Except for one really nice and somewhat cute version when she is on the island which I don't believe is on the OST. It is brief but my favorite unreleased moment. It appears in the scene when she is practicing with her staff . Also, there is another pretty cool brief but completely different rendition of Rey's theme later on followed by small rapid fire brass. A short moment that isn't too loud in the mix but it was cool and orchestration we've never heard before. Those two, plus the full opening track, are my biggest hopes for the FYC. Track 7 is absolutely a concert arrangement. At no point in the film does the music switch back and forth between Rose's Theme and that new fanfare type theme. That new theme seems to represent Luke on the island.

Damien F 1,830
The track names are chronological. This is the same music as TIE fighter attack, right? Don’t mind hearing that again TIE Fighter Attack fits in pretty well musically, and it's a bad ass new recording. Makes you wish Williams would re-record the entire OT. Score sounds very prominent in the film's mix, with a seriously wide stereo spectrum. The last minute of The Spark, with its Imperial March ostinato, is by far the most Brucknerian thing Williams has ever written. And it's awesome. Popular Post King Mark 3,804
Just saw the film too -The score mix was ultra loud...like Zimmer scores. In fact I think this is the loudest mixed JW score ever (except some quiet underscore scenes where the music was suddenly dialed down) -The film is scored wall to wall. This is another fan edit project that will take YEARS of work if we don't get an expanded score or a sessions leak -Track 7 :Rebellion is Reborn. The opening with Rose's Theme is not in the film at all, and the entire second part with the military motif and the Rose Theme ending is in the End Credits (but not in the album credits) -I think there is one short statement of Rose'sTheme that is unreleased, but not too different from the rest -There is one kick ass variation of Rey's Theme when she's training with her lightsaber on the island that's unreleased. For those who complained about the lack of Rey's Theme on the album that was THE passage that should have been included -A truck load of action music with brass fanfares is unreleased -There's a short statement of Jedi Steps that's unreleased -There's a lot of cool variations of the TFA Resistance March that are unreleased I guess it's fair to say most of the true highlights are on the album, except for that Rey's Theme statement when she's training on the island. But there's some much unreleased music it's hard to say what we might discover by watching the film several times crumbs, Ricard, Holko and 3 others

nightscape94 967
I haven't read through the thread yet, but my first impressions of the score in the film: The music is mixed up front in the movie, and that's a good thing. Aside from a moment or two where it's inaudible, the score is loud here. Spotted well, and very effective when used. Not surprising. So happy he continued to use the Resistance theme, I had this paranoia that he would abandon it. I seem to think it was used more in this than in TFA. Nice smaller moments with the theme as well. I was beside myself when he used Luke and Leia's theme. Wonderful moment, I was holding my breath in anticipation when that scene started to unfold, and it sounded beautiful when it appeared. Poe's theme returns! But I only caught it once in the beginning. Jedi Temple theme returns! Could have been used even more, but maybe I didn't catch all the usages. The emperor's theme returns, and done very effectively I might add in its one callback. The movie is structured in such away that it didn't seem to allow for a ton of new material. Is there only one new theme? The one representing Rose didn't catch my attention until they were escaping on those animals, and at first I thought it was just a cue-specific thing that sounded adventurous, but then I picked up on it a couple more times after that. Nice little theme. I couldn't hear the end credits all that much over the constant chatter of post-movie discussion among the audience, but it sounded like a nice piece of music that was less like a suite with one theme after the other , and more like a long piece of music with interwoven thematic material. I want to listen to it again right away to confirm my suspicion.

Lots of kick-ass action writing similar to the prequel scores. And Rose's theme is beautiful. I was amazed to learn that the trailer music had indeed been based in part on JW's score! (I'm guessing that's already been mentioned many times here, but obviously I haven't read through most of the threads, something I will do tomorrow!) KK 3,310
Just got back from the film, and the score does its duty well. Star Wars always sounds best with proper Williams driving it forward. And considering how uneven the whole film is, I can understand how Williams seems to have struggled finding a strong, unified identity for the score. As for missing material, its not that much aside from some good Poe's theme and Rey's Theme statements. Also, anyone else figured out why the Emperor's theme popped up? Jay 41,629
So let's see. The film is 2 1/2 hours and scored almost wall to wall. The OST is 77 minutes, but 4 minutes of that is a concert arrangement, so really we have 73 minutes of film score. We basically only have half the score, for sure. And having just coming back from the film after listening to the album 5-6 times so being pretty familiar with it, I can definitely say there are ABSOLUTELY some great unreleased highlights. Entire sequences aren't covered on the OST at all, and some themes get GREAT iterations in the film that aren't on the album. My #1 wanted unreleased highlight is a GREAT rendition of Rey's Theme when she trains by herself with the lightsaber. It was great! One of my bummer moments after I first finished the OST album was that he didn't do much with Rey's Theme, didn't take it into a big new place like I was hoping. Well after seeing the film - he did! The complete score features a LOT Of Rey's theme, and this scene in particular had one of the highlight moments. #2 is the Emperor's Theme when Snoke zaps Rey. Sounded really neat! #3 is Poe's Theme from the beginning of the film, after BB8 fixes his guns and he destroys the last cannon. We get a big grand statement of his theme in the film, but not the OST. The moment on the OST around 3:10 SEEMS like it should be that music, but its not - I wonder if the OST presents an earlier version, and he later recorded an Insert to make Poe's Theme bigger and more obvious. The other possibility is that it was just edited out of the OST. #4 is the second iteration of the Jedi Steps theme. He only uses it twice in the film, and the first one is on the OST but the second one isn't. Well, the second one was better than the first one. Bummer he put the other one on the CD! I don't remember any more specific highlights, but I very often noted music that wasn't on the CD. I'd love a complete release! crumbs and Ricard 1

Jay 41,629
Yes, you're absolutely right! The Resistance March is amazing in this score! He took kind of a minor theme from TFA (it disappears at the end) and turns it into one of the main themes of this film! It gets many great iterations throughout the entire score! Two of Holdo's scenes are scored with it. Other than Rey's Theme, it probably gets varied and used the most out of all the themes. crumbs
artguy360 1,993
Welp, I saw the film and didn't like it much at all. A lot of stuff didn't feel like Star Wars to me and other dramatic factors felt contrived. But about the music, the major new theme (outside of Rose's Theme) is actually for Luke's "life" on the island or something. Very interesting. Also the End Credits music on the OST is not complete. I think there is an extended performance of Luke's island life material as well as most of The Battle of Crait music. Am I wrong? I'd love to know. Also the new rendition of Rey's Theme when she is training with the lightsaber is awesome and not on the OST.
