SteveMc 2,674
RIP Truly one of the great composers. Popular Post Pawel P. 738
Just before his passing Ennio Morricone wrote a touching goodbye... “I, Ennio Morricone, am dead. So I announce it to all the friends who have always been close to me and also to those who are a little far away, whom I greet with great affection. Impossible to name them all. But a special memory is for Peppuccio and Roberta, fraternal friends very present in the last years of our life. There is only one reason that prompts me to greet everyone like this and to have a funeral in private form: I don't want to disturb you. I warmly greet Ines, Laura, Sara, Enzo and Norbert for sharing a large part of my life with me and my family. I want to remember with love my sisters Adriana, Maria and Franca and their loved ones and to let them know how much I loved them. A full intense and profound greeting to my children, Marco, Alessandra, Andrea and Giovanni, my daughter-in-law Monica, and to my grandchildren Francesca, Valentina, Francesco and Luca. I hope they understand how much I loved them. Last but not least (Maria). I renew to you the extraordinary love that has held us together and that I am sorry to abandon. To you the most painful farewell. Holko 9,526
Actually his was one of the first film scores I really took to and wanted to have (I was maybe 5 or 6), I remember recording one variation of the main theme on my flipphone for a ringtone. And I still love it. SteveMc

Popular Post TownerFan 4,983
I've been distraught for most of the day. Cannot listen to any of his music without feeling overwhelmed at the moment. I jotted down a personal homage on The Legacy of John Williams website, I hope it makes some sense: https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2020/07/06/rip-ennio-morricone/ Btw, here in Italy is basically a mourning day. He was loved by literally everyone. din_zav, ChrisAfonso, Score and 2 others

Edmilson 7,465
His masterpiece in my opinion is the score for Once Upon a Time in the West. It's one of the best scored movies ever made. The Untouchables and Once Upon a Time in America are great as well. The Mission is a fine OST, but I never watched the movie, so I don't know how the music works in context. But I'm pretty sure it's amazing,

Brundlefly 2,385
No one likes to wake up and have several private messages in his WhatsApp chat that tell you one of your biggest idols just passed away. That said, I was really touched by the fact that so many of my friends seemed to be emotionally very invested in the maestro's death. Rest in Peace. Meanwhile, I have found the words to express my happiness about the fact that he had the chance to reach that impressive age, that he aged and died with dignity and that he was even able to say goodbye to everyone who was important to him and everyone he was important to. I also want to say that Hans Zimmer absolutely nailed it by saying that "Ennio was an icon and icons just don't go away"! Today, this is what I'm going to listen to in order to commemorate him. King Mark 3,631
Very sad. Not in my top 10 composers personally but I enjoy some of his works I heard this on TV. Popular Post publicist 4,643
I will close the day with this elephantine listing of Morricone's work - and that's only his film and tv stuff, not counting stage, advertising and classical works. His musical genius is one thing, but genius doesn't come often with such eye-popping productivity. So one thing to remember is that the endless tributes to his Leone work or selected american scores, i. e. The Mission or The Thing point you to but a tiny fraction of what he did and as someone who relentlessly downloaded everything Morricone off Napster in the early 2000's i can attest tho the fact that many on this list that no one here has ever heard are way better or at least on par with his famous works. 1960s Year Title Director Notes 1960 Run with the Devil Mario Camerini Orchestrations only Score composed by Piero Piccioni, Lipstick Damiano Damiani Orchestrations only Score composed by Giovanni Fusco L'Avventura Michelangelo Antonioni Le Pillole Di Ercole Luciano Salce Rejected score Replaced by Armando Trovajoli 1961 The Fascist First full score The Last Judgment Vittorio De Sica Arrangements and Conducting only Score composed by Alessandro Cicognini, 1962 L'italiano ha 50 anni Francomaria Trapani Orchestrations only Composed by Gino Peguri, Gli Italiani e le vacanze Filippo Walter Ratti N/A I motorizzati Camillo Mastrocinque N/A Crazy Desire Luciano Salce N/A Il Sorpasso Dino Risi Orchestrations only Score composed by Riz Ortolani I due della legione Lucio Fulci Orchestrations only Score composed by Luis Bacalov Eighteen in the Sun Camillo Mastrocinque N/A A Girl...and a Million Luciano Salce N/A 1963 Violenza segreta Giorgio Moser Orchestrations only Score composed by Giovanni Fusco Il Successo Dino Risi N/A Le monachine Luciano Salce N/A El Greco N/A Gunfight at Red Sands Ricardo BlascoMario Caiano First Western film score I basilischi Lina Wertmüller N/A 1964 Una Nuova fonte di energia Daniele G. Kühni 485
A sad day, and of course this ghastly year had to claim one of the truly Greats. It's difficult to corral my thoughts into a coherent fashion, so I'll just post one of my favourite pieces by Ennio Morricone:
Popular Post Ludwig 1,120
Deeply saddening news. More about his genius... A certain quote from Morricone has fascinated me ever since I came across it. In a course by Italian musicologist Sergio Miceli in which Morricone took part (what a dream that surely was!), talking about themes, Morricone said: Quote Certainly the theme is extremely important, even if I personally have always considered it of little significance. For this reason, especially in the first films of Leone but also . . . on many other occasions afterward, I have attempted to distinguish it, to subtract it from its conventional function. In some cases I have augmented the result with timbre, in others with the pursuit of a theme made of intervals. I have had to concentrate on something that could redeem the low vulgarity of the theme... It is truly a genius who on the one hand had such low regard for themes yet on the other wrote themes so deeply moving that they betray a deep understanding of their inner workings. bruce marshall, Taikomochi and din_zav 2

Popular Post Omen II 1,235
I was very saddened to hear of Ennio Morricone's passing this morning. He was truly one of the great composers of the last sixty years or so (and not just film composers) with a seemingly bottomless well of inspiration and genius from which to draw. I had the good fortune to see him conduct his music in concert six or seven times in London, including his first UK concert at the Barbican in 2001. I have particularly fond memories of his concert at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2006, as it was one that I took my Mum to see. She died on this day two years ago. Of all the wonderful pieces of music he wrote, the one that keeps going around my head today is the theme from La Ragion Pura - a typically gorgeous Morricone melody with ghostly trumpets (Morricone's instrument) interjecting in another key, as if commenting from another world. RIP Maestro. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Tydirium, din_zav and Bespin
JohnnyD 1,223
This is truly sad. My prayers go out to his family. I was not familiar with his body of work, but I remember The Mission. A powerful film with a powerful score. R.I.P. Maestro Ennio Morricone. May you be welcomed into Heaven with this: Bespin and karelm

EM is UNIQUE in that he used elements of rock music'- particularly the electric guitar, chanted vocals and thundering percussion. Not surprisingly he had a huge following among rockers. Listen to these two pieces by PINK FLOYD: the first could be music for the climactic shootout of a western; the soaring soprano of the second track is right out of the Edda songbook. crocodile 8,017
Listening to one of my favourite Morricone albums... The Demons of St Petersburg from 2008. Not exactly an obvious choice as not many people know this work. But I fell in love from my first listen. The entire score is lovely but the somewhat final track is a beauty. Marian Schedenig 8,198
I'll just paste my Facebook/Twitter post here: RIP Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) Besides "serious" concert works and songs, Morricone's ouevre includes an unmatched 500 film scores. His skill to effortlessly switch between styles, from avant-garde to deliberate kitsch, from serious to tongue in cheek, often within the same piece, and without ever compromising his musical seriousness, earned him virtually universal respect and made him not only one of the greatest film composers in both Hollywood and Europe, but also one of the most popular. In 1964, Morricone single-handedly defined the sound of the Spaghetti Western with his then unique (but afterwards much copied) score for "A Fistful of Dollars". While that trilogy (culminating in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"'s iconic "The Ecstasy of Gold") together with "Once Upon a Time in the West" (with its famous blend of harmonica and electric guitar) contains enough hits to make him a household name, Morricone was much too prolific to by typecast to just a few select genres. He had the fortune of having close collaborations with directors like De Palma and most notably Leone and Tornatore, who understood what he could bring to their films and trusted him to carry pivotal scenes in the films just with his music. One of the last musical titans of the 20th century.

LIKE OUTIW, I heard MISSION long before I ever screened it. Unlike WEST, which I consider a cinematic masterpiece, , MISSION didn't make a big impression on me. When I listen to the CD it is a pure musical experience, devoid of filmic associations. Wondrous! On the flip side... Ennio is the only composer I can think of who makes me LAUGH!!!! Everytime the ' Jew's harp' twangs in FAFDM , I crack up. There are numerous instances in the Leone films where his music provides humourous musical punctuation!
