  3. It's so great to hear him speak with so much clarity and in such a lively manner. Long live the maestro!

  4. The flute solo at the second half of "The Scavenger" is probably my favorite moment. It might be one of the most beautiful things Williams' has written.

  5. I would imagine so. You can see the leader of the first violins working out the bowing at the end of the clip and marking her part during the piece. Also the rehearsal clip is filmed in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall rather than Usher Hall in Edinburgh, suggesting that it was an early read through rather than a final dress rehearsal. It's still great to see it performed all the way through by a top class orchestra.

  6. That rule is actually complete bogus, and no longer taught in schools in the UK.

  7. I love the snare and muted (?) trumpet music that plays when Obi-Wan describes to Jar Jar how the battledroids will kill him.

  9. Don't forget John Williams is also an expert of the Moon. Blood Moon (Images) Over The Moon (E.T.) The Canyon Of The Crescent Moon (Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade) Moonlight (Sabrina) The Moon Rising (A.I.)

  10. I agree with you. The film is fast paced, with characters and situations going one after the other allowing for very few rests in between. I think we could hardly create such a good connection with Rey, as we were able as soon as the first view of the film, without the help from her theme.

  11. Yes, it is glorious. Check out this little gem from the archives of JW: ...and notice how he got to that huge D major theme. This is exactly what Shosty did to get to his D major...it is a resolution by step. So hopefully you see this is not a jarring penultimate progression but a very dramatic and satisfying one.

  12. For me, it’s already one of the best Star Wars themes and I immediately loved it, there were no growing time needed for me, so I guess I was lucky I hope it gets great treatment in the next two movies, I think it’s meant to be. Everything just clicked for me with the whole character. Daisy’s youthful enthusiasm with her athleticism, the banter with Finn, the music, it was an overall great experience for me. I think this is the kind of theme this movie needed, not an overly epic Duel of the Fates type music, so I’m perfectly happy with it.

  13. Yes, like how the sessions for all the other SW scores leaked.

  14. That's because his soundtracks are usually brickwalled to shit. It doesn't even sound like an orchestra.

  15. Strange creative decision from JW, but at least he gave people options. The film ending of TFA's End Credits is perfect.

  16. Yes the orchestra is fine but the performance is somewhat slow in that rehearsal recording, which deprives the theme of its energy and effortless flow.

  17. Fantastic! Thank you, Mari. The video of a complete run through of Rey's Theme in rehearsal is an unexpected bonus. I love it when the Scots use the word 'outwith'. Does anywhere else in the English-speaking world use that word?

  18. Congratulations to the Maestro for this honour. It was nice to see him acknowledging the musicians and all the great people who work in the film scoring industry as well.

  28. His voice is quite obvious to my ears. Essentially all of the Bruce Wayne material in Batman Begins, and the Harvey Dent material in The Dark Knight.

  29. His strongest year yet, probably, and just when I had more or less given up on expecting something fresh from him. His scores still tend to seem too spread out in their full (album) length, but all of his entries for 2015 have strong highlights. And the way he manages to support a film with a few well timed modulations (e.g. Pin-Ultimate Experience, if I'm not mixing up the cues) is first rate.

  31. Not bad at all. Generic? Yes. Thrilling, engaging? Quite so. Thrilling in a way that equals JW's level of brilliant, intellectual writing? Perhaps not. I'm interested in Zimmer's contributions, and like KK and TGP, I hope some shimmer echoing Man of Steel or even Interstellar has managed to find a way into this score. A dose of material you don't readily appreciate can be refreshing to listen to. Get out of your comfort zone, gents! If there's anything I can't stand, it's the snobby, pseudo-intellectual disdain (for Zimmer, especially) that tends to creep around here.

  34. Wow. It's hard to imagine two people having SO radically different opinions on a film. For me, it's on so many "top" lists -- best film since 2000, top 5 Spielberg films, top 10 sci fi etc. etc. Fantastic all around! But I'm glad to see we agree on the score, at least.

  35. Don't know though, I reckon after a few LeBlanc could knock out a producer. Or any quips about Lost in Space. So long as there's no trips planned to South America, new Top Gear might do okay.

  36. 2234 is already trapped in the friendzone forever, sorry. Also I didn't notice the Maxim watermark until after I made this, however quickly. Guess some people get off to Superman.
