  1. Soundtrack-wise, I'm hoping for an Episode VIII score from John Williams.

  2. Blablabla. Your elaborations are neither really true nor all that insightful. Zimmer has his healthy share of shit out there (as have other composers) but that's often a reflection of the dumb movies he scores for premium money. All the cultural implications that entails have not much to do with Zimmer but with general societal developments (education & social) of the last 20, 30 years. The real culprit seems to be that he is a pop composer who writes in idioms you just can't connect to...meaning that even if the man writes some remarkable and ahead-of-its-time music (however eclectic), you wouldn't know or care to know. So let's call a spade a spade here.

  3. Comparing scale and depth of the writing, the other nominees are a joke compared to TFA, like not even worth discussing in the same breath. But alas Williams will not win.

  5. I think Rey's Theme excels in the sense that each part relates or describes her character somehow. The piano/bells express her loneliness and isolation on Jakku, the melody her adventurousness, the flutes at the beginning her quickness and resourcefulness, etc. It's fairly light theme that is constantly rising and moving forward. And JW uses Rey's Theme in such interesting ways throughout the film. The Scavenger is my favorite presentation of it, but The Abduction, and End Credits also have fantastic renditions.

  6. I think that early TFA criticism is dying out as people are rallying around Rey's Theme, March of the Resistance, and Jedi Steps. But I still think he'd get some backlash if he won an Oscar for it and the haters would have an excuse to start calling it "OOOOOVVVVVEEEEERRRRAAATTTTTEEEEDDD" on top of a disappointment. Morricone has always been more of an underdog so I'd rather he get his first competing Oscar for his wonderfully odd score and everybody can just be happy. Don't need Quentin Tarantino pitching a big ol fit either if Morricone were to lose so Williams could pick up his 6th for another Star Wars..... Meh, I mean of course it'd be lovely to see him up there and all but the Internet can spoil nice things. We know TFA's score bears scrutiny, it can withstand being a little underappreciated I'm just excited for the summer with everybody generally loving on Johnny around the AFI lifetime tribute thing and writing retrospective articles and Twitter posting their favorite scores and shit like that. I want good vibes, not another reason to whine about Force Awakens and that he already has too many awards or whatever.

  7. Sorry guys! What we're all MISSING here is the POINT where The Force Awakens is SHIT. STAR WARS is the REAL score here and the corporate overlords KNOW this. The Force clearly hasn't awoken with this SCORE FOR DUMMY poopoo HEADS. BTW. I was skyy38 all ALONG!

  8. A pretty interesting blog I stumbled upon this afternoon. Gives some insight into Williams humble abode and claims that a new recording of the flute concerto was done with Slatkin. http://blogs.chapman.edu/copa/2014/03/25/were-off-to-see-the-wizard-a-meeting-with-composer-john-williams/

  9. They made it sound moaaar like the EPIC music in the trailers. His source is well connected, so it must be true.

  10. TOS was sleek in a retro way. Especially compared to the blocky reboot stuff.

  13. I've been giving some thought to this kind of thing lately - the intrinsic connection we make between movie characters and their music, and whilst I do think there's some truth in what you are saying, I do still wonder how much it may possibly be more of a happy convenience rather than the notion of music finding the 'core' of a character; lately I'm increasingly inclined to believe the music fits instead simply because of our own projections and responses. When we listen to Rey's Theme, we make the nuances of the music fit. It's a basic celebral desire of our cognitive processes. In other words: I think there's likely to be plenty of other music out there which would likely suit the character of Rey well enough.

  14. Come on. If you listen to depressingly art- and meaningless stuff like the Watertower clip you don't need an agenda to call it crap. That on the other hand some of those who call it crap are twats doesn't necessarily make the observation obsolete and doesn't negate a 30-year long career that has so much more to offer than this pitiful blockbuster stuff.

  16. "The Book Thief" is a functional score and that's about it, although the film didn't really allow Williams to unleash glorious flowing themes and stunningly complex action cues. I do enjoy the suite though. That's why I'm really looking forward to "The BFG". Something that isn't Star Wars (I did love TFA though) or a historical drama.

  17. It's probably rooted in the silly notion that you can make one thing better by hating another. I reckon it has much less to do with how people actually feel about his music than with his position as a "non-Williams," the most prominent one. His music is very different. It's sparked trends that snuffed out the big classic sound. He doesn't have the quasi-monastic lifestyle/persona/working method as Williams. So, we must hate him. That's it. That's where the fervent hatred comes from. Not from just disliking the music. It's some primitive tribal thinking shit. It's fucking tiring.

  20. The flute solo at the second half of "The Scavenger" is probably my favorite moment. It might be one of the most beautiful things Williams' has written.

  22. For me, it’s already one of the best Star Wars themes and I immediately loved it, there were no growing time needed for me, so I guess I was lucky I hope it gets great treatment in the next two movies, I think it’s meant to be. Everything just clicked for me with the whole character. Daisy’s youthful enthusiasm with her athleticism, the banter with Finn, the music, it was an overall great experience for me. I think this is the kind of theme this movie needed, not an overly epic Duel of the Fates type music, so I’m perfectly happy with it.

  24. Rey's Theme has over 2 million views on YouTube in less than 2 months. Not bad at all for a theme that some have deemed unmemorable.

  25. Some cool bits from KOTCS: 2:01 - 2:28: Love everything about this, from the ascending strings, to the cute clarinet solo, to the minimalist percussion, to the quirky pizzicati in the strings. 2:17 - 2:29: Really like those low DUUUH notes. The tonic here is F, and the DUUUH notes are E, i.e. the leading tone. It sounds very unstable and unsettling!
