  4. Just saw this on Simone's Facebook. Producer is Varese's Robert Townson. Not sure if anyone is familiar, but Simone does fantastic piano transcriptions of Williams music and uploads them to his YT channel, for example: and We can look forward to some studio recordings of these on an album very soon!

  6. It's only half 11 in Los Angeles. Still over 9 hours until it's even on live!

  10. Just call them up and place your ordere before it arrives to their warehouse. Without notice of the discount, I called them to see when they should be getting it in and they informed me towards the end of February. They went on to say that if I pre-order it now, it will be discounted 15% and it indeed was. However, I ended up canceling my order because they charged me for the discounted score which did not include shipping because they "could not determine the cost of shipping without the product physically being there" - wtf? So knowing Lucks and the cost of their shipping, (as well as the time it takes for a package to get from Wisconsin to Northern California) I chose to go with sheetmusicplus since I can pay for 1 to 2 week budget shipping and receive it in a matter of 2 or 3 days since I live close to their warehouse. I am, however, going to purchase the cello part from Luck's once it is available as I think they are the only sheet music retailer that sells individual SE parts.

  12. It's okay. Just feels a bit limp compared to its predecessors.

  13. I think the movie is a blast, and the end of the credits cue is maybe the finest of grandiose bombast.

  14. 1:57 to 2:11 So wistful and bittersweet. It's moments like this that speaks to what being a child is so profoundly to me. It essentially is childhood coded in music.

  15. This past December, I had the fun opportunity of seeing Home Alone live in concert at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City, UT. http://www.utahsymphony.org/15-16-season/1112-home-alone-feature-film-with-the-utah-symphony I gotta tell you: losing my aural virginity to a John Williams score live in concert was something else. It is definitely magnitudes better hearing it live than on a soundtrack. I got chills just listening to the 20th Century Fox theme. And from there, it was a roller coaster ride of emotions swirling around a Christmas tale of a kid outsmarting a pair of otherwise wonderful actors. And I kept the program as a souvenir. My only regrets? 1) I couldn't take any pictures or video recording during the show. Looking back, though, it was the better decision to make seeing how getting kicked out during my first ever John Williams concert would've ruined it for myself. 2) I couldn't get a peek at the full score on the conductor's stand. If I did, I could've gotten the cue list for Home Alone.

  18. I'm so happy and proud about this. Simone is a dear friend of mine and a huge, huge Williams fan. He's also an amazing world-class pianist (he won the prestigious Van Cliburn contest several years ago) who can bring out the soul of a piece of music with great sensitivity. He devoted a lot of his time studying and understanding Williams' music and worked out some brilliant piano transcriptions. Just wait until you'll hear them! I can't wait for all of you (and myself too) to hear his album.

  19. Me too, I was thinking about posting this here, now I guess I won’t have to It brings back memories from when I was 5, it was one of the first little musical moments that stood out to me besides the main themes and maybe the suspense-panic motif.

  20. Lincoln should have been a 2 hour suite of his 'Discussion Theme.'

  21. Agreed, I'd rather see McGregor star in his own Obi-Wan movie that takes place between the PT and OT than I would him have anything to do with the ST.

  23. Can you imagine a live to projection of Temple of Doom? That film is practically non-stop, wall-to-wall Williams.

  26. Not exactly short, and not especially long, but this version of the "Somewhere In My Memory" theme, without chorus (the Walking Home cue) is hands down my favorite in the entire score. Great orchestration 0:00 - 1:00

  27. Love the versions of the Force theme and Yoda's theme during this stretch and the fluid connection between the two. The underlying rapid strings strike again. Flawless. 10:58 - 11:28

  28. 1:41 - 2:09 We've all heard the Star Wars "theme" and the concert suite so many times that I think it can be easy to forget how wonderfully effective Williams' scoring is in the moments immediately after the crawl and its weight and power in the actual movie experience. This is an incredibly important section in terms of setting the transitionary tone out of the bombastic title march and into the movie proper. The way it shifts with the strings climbing up frantically as the words disappear into a series of ominous chords, heightening the tension, only to allow us momentary pause as we reflect on the stars. This fleeting meditation gives way to more rushing strings, giving us yet another pang of unease as they rise rise but we descend. A new alien planet system is then announced with a massive timpani roll and gong hit before ramping up into a fanfare flourish which is abbreviated due to the sudden overhead appearance of visual chaos. All of this juking around purposefully puts you off balance and is musically striking at the same time. Williams prepares you so perfectly for all of this in the span of about 25 seconds that it's ridiculous.

  29. 2:30 - onward. Perfect. Just perfect. All the way from the superimposed triads to the quartal RAIDERS/STAR WARS blend at 2:46.

  30. A little longer than the "15 seconds" requirement, but 2:32-2:59 are awesome. 1:04-1:51. Bone-chilling. And to keep it short I even had to leave out the Sith chorale bit! The whole "Rise of the Empire" sequence might well be my favorite all-time five minutes in film music history.

  31. 2:08 - 2:10 The orchestral equivalent of dragging your nails down a chalkboard. 3:05 - 3:11 Simply 'WTF'.

  33. Few excerpts from Temple of Doom: 2:02 - 2:20 I've noticed that whenever Williams goes aleatoric like this, with the strings going crazy, he decorates around it by adding short phrases and 'snippets' to make the music more interesting. For example here, on top of the strings you hear the bassoon, then clarinet, then horns...all of which give entirely different sounds, and keep the listener engaged. 0:30 - 0:37 This is like some sort of tribal dance on acid...(and I should also give special mention to those orchestral slides down, which are also great snippets!) And a couple more from the Harry Potter series: 1:39 - 1:45 If there's one snippet of music in Harry Potter that sounds definitely 'wizardly', it's this! (this also appears in "Cornish Pixies" in CoS) 2:09 - 2:15 I like the counterpoint in this one!
