Popular Post TheUlyssesian 2,478
As you know, it is a yearly tradition at the Oscars where they show a 3 to 5 minute montage of important industry people that have died. Accompanying it is a live orchestra typically, playing a somber piece, typically from film music. Earlier this year, they made an unexpected but brilliant choice - the Kent family theme! It got me thinking what other pieces could be adapted to such a presentation. Violin Solo of And Malice Towards None in Freedom's Call (expanded) I actually think this is the standout rendition of this theme though people prefer the piano and the horn solos. I think the violin so expressive. And they could get a big star violinist and expand the piece and making it all amazing. Finale Piano solo from Book Thief (expanded) The Face of Pan And of course we always have Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan and all 3 themes from Schindler's List. What else can be adapted into a sombre piece? David Story, Will and SteveMc

Edmilson 7,457
I was thinking maybe a new arrangement of Luke and Leia from ROTJ - maybe even with a cello solo. But, considering the recent and memorable appearance of that theme on The Last Jedi, they'll be taking the risk of people who are not film score buffs associating it too much with Star Wars. There's also Remembering Emilie and Finale from War Horse. That Gloria Cheng piano solo would be very touching. TheUlyssesian
Arpy 4,145
The Farewell Scene from Nixon I think it has a nice movement from solemn and sombre to optimistic. It's a very intimate and reflective piece. Amer

I think the strings are a tad overdramatic but I think if restructured as a piano piece it would work very well.

That track is part of what I've called John Williams' "religious sound", a pastoral sound he excels at and -- in fact -- is one of the main reasons why he's my favourite composer (far more than the action stuff). There are many other examples: "Restoration" from JANE EYRE, "The Miracle" from HEIDI, "Final Duel" bit from JEDI, "The Penitant Man Will Pass" from INDY 3, "Star of Bethlehem" from HOME ALONE, "The Meeting with Mao" from NIXON, "Look Down, Lord" from ROSEWOOD, "Angela's Prayer" from ANGELA'S ASHES, "Fawkes the Phoenix" from HP2, "Window to the Past" from HP3, "Hatikvah/The Hope" from MUNICH and so on. But I also think the aforementioned "Elegy for Cello and Piano/Orchestra" is a great candidate, written for an actual funeral and one of my favourite concert pieces by JW. TheUlyssesian 2,478
I agree. There is something melancholy about it, or atleast deeply felt which makes it appropriate for a funeral - tastefully arranged of course.
