By the time Williams came to close things out with his final encore, I was one of only 4 people that remained in my row in the middle section. Seeing people walking out with their backs to the orchestra during Indy just felt really wrong, haha. Is it to get ahead of the traffic or something? This was a once in a lifetime experience, you spent the money to get the tickets, you made the trip out there. Why can you not just sit there and enjoy the entire concert? Why must people always be in a rush to not enjoy things in life? Perhaps I'm overreacting. Was just a bit upsetting. Traffic is tough--a packed parking lot and a couple country roads, but yes, unacceptable. They were probably people for whom Tanglewood is a yearly or even more so event. Popular Post Ricard 2,245
Review from The Berkshire Eagle: https://www.berkshireeagle.com/stories/john-williams-takes-concertgoers-on-a-journey-across-the-stars-at-tanglewood,578857 Quote As one might expect, no one conducts Williams' music like the composer. Despite his initial skepticism about adapting his scores for an iconic violinist like Mutter, he explained how they first met during a Tanglewood weekend several years ago. Since he had crafted showpieces for Itzhak Perlman, Gil Shaham and Yo-Yo Ma, among others, "she asked me to write at least nine measures of music for her," Williams recalled. Although too busy, after receiving a box of Bavarian Christmas cookies from Mutter, "I felt great guilt," he confessed. To atone: An eight-minute work for solo violin, strings and harp called "Markings," premiered two summers ago at Tanglewood by Mutter with BSO music director Andris Nelsons. "The new piece was warm-hued and lyrical, its generous spirit calling forth a like spirit from soloist, conductor and orchestra," Eagle classical music critic Andrew L. Pincus wrote. Emboldened, Mutter stepped up her campaign to overcome Williams' resistance. "I told her you can't play `Star Wars' on the violin, but I became intrigued by the idea," he acknowledged. "Anne-Sophie is many things, one of the world's greatest violinists, an ambassador for new music, a great representative of her country, but she's not a woman you can say `no' to." Interesting, especially considering he presents it a lot less in concerts than the main theme. I seem to remember an interview where he told that Remembrances was the very first thing he wrote after seeing the film with Spielberg, but he realized he needed something different for the final sequence. crumbs 14,316
I vaguely recall reading that before, that Williams preferred Remembrances and intended it to be the score's signature idea, but Spielberg preferred the Main Theme instead. And who can blame him, it works brilliantly in those final 5-6 minutes.
