  1. Inside look at the making of the score! EDIT: Who made my post its own thread? Not complaining, we just have so many TFA threads already. Okay then. haha

  2. I've never seen this video before, but here's an excellent tv segment on John Williams composing and recording the score for Return of the Jedi. It includes interviews with Lionel Newman and others. This is pretty great. There are some hilarious cuts between JW conducting and Luke swinging his lightsaber. It also includes footage from other films and scoring sessions. Has this been shared here before?

  3. I've tried since 9:55 also, no luck for me either! I've seen the seating plan once at 10:29 and nothing since! I also tried their phone number, it's busy all the way, can't speak to anyone... Good luck all

  4. I don't know, I just saw the Star Wars medley on the Disney special currently airing. Rey's theme was glorious and the audience seemed into it.

  8. Anderson has sides? All his movies are the exact same style to me. I like his style (generally, some films or more successful than others, and I haven't seen them all). But to me, he's a one-trick writer-director who always done the same trick.

  9. I really wanted to give Fury Road a chance, and I've seen it several times. It's not a bad movie, but aside from a few things, there isn't much difference from other action flicks. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around why critics are head-over-heels in love with it. You love Fury Road, great! But it leaves me indifferent. -- The Grand Budapest Hotel The movie looks great, with superb art direction and a suitably quirky score from Alexandre Desplat. But the script is witless, no humanity, the setting too far removed from reality and the non-sequiturs are just not funny. Ralph Fiennes tries his hardest to sell the lines Wes Anderson gives him, but it didn't make me laugh or chuckle. (Especially Fiennes' little comment about how Zero smells.) The endless parade of cameos doesn't help either, especially Edward Norton. (I did want more of Tilda Swinton though.) The movie is less precious and irritating than Moonrise Kingdom or Fantastic Mr. Fox, but the story is much ado about nothing. It just dithers around, as if viewers will just focus on the A-list actors and superb visuals.

  10. It's not that they are bad, they are bit more pricey and IMO, looking up to the orchestra is not as good as the balcony seats. But I believe you do get waiters and stuff. At the end of the day, ANY spot in that place is worth the money though.

  11. Yes, colourful, vibrant. Fantastical yet not unrealistic. Slocombe's work for Spielberg somehow always struck me as a bit atypical for the visual style or the director. A little bit more down to earth and less stylised then the rest of Spielberg's 80's films. The way Raiders was shot actually reminds me of Jaws.

  13. This isn't Williams, but this is the kind of thing we're looking for ;): That cue is currently the front runner. I'm happy to go with it if I can't find a better alternative from Williams, who I'd ultimately prefer *if possible*. Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, it's appreciated. Sharky, those cues are pretty and I definitely think the Lalo one is suitable once the intro is out of the way. The Nixon one would have been fine actually, if only the trumpet was on a fiddle GreyPilgrim, the AI one... stunning. Now I need to search YouTube for a version which jettisons the voice and replaces it with silky strings, because that melody... I'd forgotten how lush it is.

Yeah sail barge assault is Sessions, as they are in abbey road. the Parade of the ewoks bit is not the same room, and dark as it is, it seems a concert hall. (the ET segment if from the boston pops. And parade of the ewoks sounds like in the boston pops cd.

  17. My mom did it since I was busy at the moment (this concert has been a tradition for us for eight years now). According to her, call 617-266-2378 and they'll transfer you into the box office line. Direct line is busy.

  18. Same here, I've been trying since 10am, and it's been a stressful 35 minutes! >_< It's hard to imagine anyone could have successfully bought any tickets over the web so far given that the site won't even load. I'm tempted to say it's worse than Ticketmaster! But that would be going too far.

  20. I meant their reaction after it concluded (which was shown more on the live broadcast). Yes, you could make the case the enthusiasm was only for the non-TFA themes, but my point is that Rey's theme flawlessly combines with the other great SW themes and people reacted as such.

  23. No no no. THE Composer. Isn't he the one who composes all the scores? And in Williams' case Ford didn't have to mention him by name. We all know him. The Composer. He has done everything from Back to the Future to Legend of Zelda to Star Wars.

  28. I agree, Matt C. And I didn't even give a damn about Furiosa either. It's almost like I had to endure this movie because nothing was really speaking to me. Alex

  29. Mad Max Fury Road I'm able to appreciate the technical aspects of it, but the praise heaped on this still mystifies me. George Miller gets praised for doing almost everything that other summer films get criticized for -- the orange tint, barely any story or worthwhile characters, and the action is overdone and overproduced. And the story is illogical -- why is water a precious commodity, and yet the protagonists and villains have no problem pursuing each other in these gas guzzler monster trucks? The only thing truly praiseworthy about this film is the editing and emphasis on practical effects with CGI enhancement, and even that was done better elsewhere. But claims that it's a feminist film rubs me the wrong way. There is nothing wrong with female empowerment and giving women strong leading roles, but a lot of the female roles in Fury Road are far from it. Immortan Joe is the vicious bad guy, his wives are defined by their looks, Nux is the stereotypical bad-guy-turned-good, and the Vuvalini are defined by their lone warrior status. Charlize Theron makes Imperator Furiosa the only true fleshed out character, just on her talent alone. One wishes Miller had focused solely on Furiosa and let her be the lone protagonist, she's the only character you give a damn about.

  30. My impression is that the "Parade of the Ewoks" footage is from a concert rehearsal (with the Boston Pops?) rather than the JEDI sessions seen a little later in the video.

  31. I always regarded "best composer" category in order to recognise personal achievements. It doesn't necessarily represent best music per se, more how a person grows and develops. Horner had an eclectic bunch of scores last year (one of which was very far from his comfort zone), and he also entered the concert world. That counts as some sort of achievement. I'm not sure whether Williams did anything for his career in 2015 that deserves such recognition. He composed the best score and won in three categories for that. But from a career point of view nothing significant happened. And even his score, while great, isn't exactly anything new or daring for him. That is how I see it. Karol

    THE X-FILES

If there was any complaint I had about the episode it was that the graveyard conversation between Mulder and Mann was too long. Not that they said anything that didn't need to be said; More like it was just kind of boring that the long conversation all happened in that same spot. It would have been a better idea to have the conversation take place as they were traveling from one place to another, something like that. In other words the director should have found a way to liven up all that exposition. Other than that though, totally great episode!
