That selection you pointed out is one of JW's trademark transitional segments. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, transitions are where the real geniuses excel. It's not enough to have great themes, but to move between them in a fluid manner. All the composers who we think of as Great are masters of this. Popular Post Davis 3,724
The first 12 seconds of “Betrayal at Bespin” in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is simply thrilling. To me it’s the quintessential “Star Wars-feeling”. John Williams was able to create musically the excitement of a spaceship racing through space. And then Williams beautifully makes the transition to Bespin and Han and Leia meeting their fate with Lando and Darth Vader. Brilliant cue overall. Schilkeman 1,387
What beautiful string writing with the violins and cellos speaking back and forth. When other composers develop ideas, they compose, when Williams does it, he improvises. I hear the jazz pianist in moments like this. This whole cue demonstrates this in a more obvious way. I can see Williams improvising this whole scene and just deciding to give the middle bit to the strings. It's beautiful. This score needs a new release. Popular Post CompleteRecordingSessions 53
Here are some of my favorites from 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.' 3:22-3:41 has some of the best action-string writing I've heard in a while. It's so good! I'm not sure how to correctly describe it, but I love the classic Williams heart-pounding 'prelude to third act' music that appears from 2:38-3:07. I'm not sure if that makes any sense, but I still think it's a great short moment! Also, the musical transition that occurs between 2:09 to 2:21 is so satisfying! I often repeat it way too many times! The rendition of Helena's Theme that occurs from 1:49-2:10 starts whimsical, but then transitions into such a graceful and elegant performance. I love it! Andy 5,571
The “B” theme bridge at 25:07-25:22 is perfectly sublime. The way the clusters of notes fall into place with harmonic precision, and then a key change (?) and boom-tissh for the next statement of the “A”’theme… It just fits together so perfectly. It’s so uplifting and satisfying, like it’s the only way the notes could possibly be to bridge the theme. If you gave me a lifetime, my mind couldn’t conceive of a melodic phrase as satisfying as this. Of course the entire 30 minutes are underrated brilliance.
