Brilliant! Always love hearing Mike talk about these scores and his assemblies. It's very striking to me how calm, cool and collected he is about lost tapes. Loved the anecdote about Universal starting to panic when they realised they didn't know where the Dracula masters were. Like, welcome to our lives!

 

Interesting that the upcoming parts 2 and 3 seem to be about other LSO scores. Would that be Superman and Chamber of Secrets/Harry Potter, I wonder?

I am glad that Tim Burden and Mike Matessino took time to share this with us. A small group of us JWfanners heard some of this stuff in the meeting and talk in London in October but it is great that others can now enjoy the story of how the Dracula release came to be. 

 

And as always it is a joy to hear Mike talk of Williams music as there is both the music historian and preserver of such musical legacy and a true fan speaking at the same time with such appreciation and authority on the subject.

I haven't had a chance to listen yet but is it mentioned why mono tapes of the score exist in the first place?  Is there a purpose for having them in mono?  Was the film only mixed in mono for its original release or something?

In this case I don't think the guy should be blamed for that (still terrible) mistake anymore. Maybe if Williams wouldn't have requested it, and the real tapes would have rotted under Varese's nose, but now that an MM Deluxe Edition is already out, we do know it all worked out fine.

Well... Tim Burden already did a segment with Matessino on Superman; where he discusses what he would like to do with the reissue (once more) including a new re-transfer and future proofing them !

Yep, if things come to pass as we hope (Superman + Schindler's List + all 3 Potter scores), I'll be getting all 3 releases. My poor wallet.

I got the chance to listen to this already and it's just as good as their Dracula conversation!

 

Some of the stories told include:

 

The full explanation the HP set being included in the London concert program booklet

 

Williams composing the original teaser music as a reaction to the book, not the film.  

 

The great story of what was used to record and edit HP1 in 2001, and how Mike redid every single performance edit from scratch to bring everything up into high resolution - fascinating stuff!

 

The story about how HP1 was recorded in two different recording studios (not sure how many people knew that before)

 

A discussion of the difference in how the music was mixed in the first film version the subsequent ones

 

How the Children's Suite was originally planned to be released in 2001, but was blocked by JK Rowling

 

How the Vocal Version of Hogwarts Forever came about

 

And lots more!

 

Clips played include the trailer music, Nimbus 2000 from the Children's Suite, Fighting the Troll, one of the HP2 commercials, and more.

Omg. That was an AMAZING hour that went too fast. Rowling blocking the children’s suite is BONKERS. But I’m very grateful she approved it in this set!  That clip from what I assume is a COS commercial is GLORIOUS. I can’t believe this wasn’t always planned for Black Friday!  And my god, Mike’s method for doing the SS portion of the release sounds insanely tedious!!!!

 

Im sure there are more surprises but that choral Hogwarts Forever almost had me in tears. Fucking brilliant. My god.

I'm kind of surprised that JKR was able to block a children's suite release. Does that mean she essentially has a contractual say over the release of anything with the Potter branding?

 

And regardless, I don't understand the idea of blocking something on the grounds of it being educational. How bizarre!

Fantastic interview, amazing how much work Mike did just assembling all the peformance edits for PS from scratch. Can you imagine any other producer even bothering? What a legend. 

 

Bit of a soft confirmation that everything's included here, with the alternates and commercials for all three films. I guess part of the discovery process must have been finding out what was in the sheet music vs what Williams actually recorded, and what wasn't in the sheet music but was uncovered by surprise (like the Hogwarts Forever vocal version). 

 

Should be interesting to hear more about Azkaban specifically, given all the alternates in the sheet music.
