Popular Post Incanus 5,714
As I said in the music thread: 15 hours ago, Incanus said: Now that I have the set and had some time to listen to it, I have to say this is one of my top favourite John Williams expansions ever. So much wonderful music and so much commitment and effort and love is audible in these almost 8 hours of music. While Williams is always hard working and professional all the effort put into the music of Harry Potter makes it fee like the Maestro had a special feel and connection with this particular story, a bit like he feels somewhat a custodian of the Star Wars legacy through his music. But also it is obvious Williams saw all the inherent musical possibilities in a story such as this and was engrossed in it all. Even when Cuarón wanted a change of direction, the composer quickly adapted to the new approach and gave it his all, in a very literal sense as the score is such a collection of eclectic stylistic impulses. Which means I really love it to bits. I prefer HPPS and POA over COS as it owes so much to the first score but even that has grown in my eyes thanks to this presentation as it gives a so much fuller picture of the second score. Especially all the appearances of the Chamber theme are wonderful but there are so many great little pieces sprinkled throughout and the new material Williams wrote naturally flows from the style of the first score. The listening experiences of all three scores are well thought out and the liner notes are interesting, informative and to the point which in Mike's own words allow the music to speak for itself (although I love track-by-track commentary). I was a bit of two minds on the ticking clock sound effect overlayed on Saving Buckbeak sequence in POA but even that has slowly grown on me. My only wish is that they had included a version without it (well they actually have for the latter half with the Saving Buckbeak alternate). But that is my only and a very small complaint on the whole set which is saying something. Simply a stellar release. By including the alternate Saving Buckbeak in the main program instead, they could have made this set 100% perfect (instead of only 99,5%). Yes, if I'm going to point out one improvement it would be to have included that track as it appears in the film in the main program and a version with no ticking at all in the bonus section. IMO this applies really to any situation where the film removed a part of the mix that was major enough to change the meaning of the cue, and the album restored the cue to its intended mix. I think album producers should recognise more when that's happened and offer an alternate mix for those who want to hear what was in the film. I was disappointed when Body Double from TWINE included the synths all the way through, when the film dials them out for the first section. That's a textbook example of the tone of the cue changing completely by removing part of the mix. It's especially surprising that some other cues were included as alternates with barely perceivable differences and yet this one didn't. (Perhaps they didn't have the elements required to do that...) Popular Post Holko 9,526
It's here!!! @rough cut, MusicBox packaged it excellently, two layers of bubblewrap all around and a snugly fitting cardboard box. Feels great to hold it, looks gorgeous, the middle black bit of PS is absolutely destroyed, exactly half the teeth have broken off and one of the corners that holds the jewel case tray could break off any second. The other jewel cases seem cheaper, too, I see what people meant. Disc seems fine, will rip it as soon as possible. If I remember this and handle it carefully, it won't come loose and rattle around. Update: rips just fine, I guess will play just fine too. Whew. The outer booklet feels massive! Crazy what difference a little thickness and a more wide rectangular shape instead of the usual square makes in how your mind perceives its size. It was back when I got The Hunchback of Notre Dame OST. The packaging was pretty sturdy, pretty good, but you bump it around enough it's gonna break. It's not neccesarily strong, plastic. They may not be seeing the latter ones, but are prompt about answering the former. I learned this the hard way with HP... I waited vainly for their replies when I messaged them through the order status page, but it was only after I contacted them through the main page that they got back to me. To their credit, they answered the same day and were apologetic and immediately shipped my order.
