Popular Post TheUlyssesian 2,478
Four years ago the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the “first” Oscars Concert at UCLA. It was wonderfully staged and featured live performances of all of the nominated scores and original songs (Jill Scott singing “Happy” was a highlight). Perhaps because of costs or the fact it didn’t sell out the Academy did not continue the event the following year. Now, in celebration of the 90th Academy Awards the Oscar Concert is getting another chance at redemption. In partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the 2018 Oscars Concert will be held at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 8 PM sharp. It will begin with Michael Giacchinoand Pete Docter explaining the composing process using their own film “Up” as an example (sounds like a bore, honestly). Then the rest of the program will find conductor Thomas Wilkins and special guests such as Terence Blanchard (trumpet) performing special arrangements of Oscar nominated scores from composers such as Tan Dun, Quincy Jones, Mica Levi, Rachel Portman and A.R. Rahman. The evening will end with the world premiere of “specially arranged suites” from this year’s five Original Score nominees, “Dunkirk” by Hans Zimmer, “Phantom Thread” by Jonny Greenwood,“The Shape of Water” by Alexandre Desplat, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” by John Williams and“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” by Carter Burwell. Scenes from each film will accompany the music on the Walt Disney Hall’s HD screen. PROGRAM: Introduction: Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino and Oscar-winning director Pete Docter present a live demonstration of the scoring process. Musical selections from the Oscar-winning film “UP” The Sound of Home: Rachel Portman, “Nicholas Nickleby” Nino Rota, “Amarcord” A. R. Rahman, “Slumdog Millionaire” The Sound of the Chase: Dave Grusin, “The Firm” Lalo Schifrin, “Bullitt” Jerry Goldsmith, “The Great Train Robbery” The Sound of Fear: Mica Levi, “Jackie” Quincy Jones, “In Cold Blood” John Carpenter, “Halloween” John Williams, “The Witches of Eastwick” The Sound of Love Erich Wolfgang Korngold, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” Luis Bacalov, “Il Postino” Tan Dun, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” The Sound of Courage: Terence Blanchard, “Malcolm X” Joe Hisaishi, “Spirited Away” Alex North, “Spartacus” The Sound of the Future: World premiere suites from this year’s nominated films for Original Score Carter Burwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” Alexandre Desplat, “The Shape of Water” Jonny Greenwood, “Phantom Thread” John Williams, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Hans Zimmer, “Dunkirk” Source: https://theplaylist.net/dunkirk-halloween-2018-oscars-concert-20180201/ Ricard, James, Jay and 1 other

peter.anschutz 43
Yeah, my guess is it'll just be Rebellion too, especially since that's the upcoming John Williams Signature Edition release from Hal Leonard. I was hoping for more, like the TFA suite, but alas...
KingPin 201
Seeing as how Rebellion was just performed last night in San Diego, I would rule out “world premiere” on that particular piece. Separately, I would love to see Spirited Away performed live.
aviazn 273
Seems like a full program. Doesn’t look like there’s enough time slotted for the nominees for the TLJ to be anything but Rebellion. A shame. I don’t mind Rebellion as an album track, but I find it totally underwhelming as a standalone concert piece. Two themes I’m pretty meh about and one of the weaker concert endings Williams has written. It honestly reminds me of a Giacchino finale.

I'm talking about the last 15 seconds, those last repetitive chords. Compared to the intricate triplets rhythms in the last two bars of the Imperial March, or even the scale that tops off March of the Resistance, or the playful little string runs at the end of The Adventure Continues, it falls pretty flat to me. Ricard 2,245
Quote Introducing the “House of Woodcock” theme from Greenwood’s “Phantom Thread” music, Paul Thomas Anderson said he asked the Radiohead guitarist to “write some music like Nelson Riddle would,” figuring that the combination of that 50’s composer’s style and Greenwood’s “British, depressed and atonal” approach would yield something interesting. Which, of course, it did: The “Phantom Thread” music is gentle and elegant, but with an uneasy sense that something’s not quite right. It was followed by 51-time nominee John Williams, who got the night’s biggest ovation from the audience and from the orchestra simply for walking onstage – and another ovation for the richly dramatic “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” cue “The Rebellion Is Reborn.” “John is a legend, but he doesn’t work like a legend,” said director Johnson. “He works like a little kid sprinting toward a playground because that’s where the toys are.” And while you might think it’d be tough to follow John Williams, Hans Zimmer did just that with the monumental “Home” from “Dunkirk.” Nolan said he wanted music that was completely integrated with the film’s sound effects and picture, and in fact the composition began with aircraft noises before building to a deep, massive and doomy throb that became bigger and bigger before yielding to a beautiful, yearning and melodic coda. https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/the-wrap/article/Academy-Takes-Over-Disney-Hall-for-Spectacular-12719026.php Quote The night had a rock star anyway in 86-year-old John Williams, who was welcomed with whoops and cheers more common in arenas than concert halls. Williams' Oscar nomination for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is his 51st. Williams was introduced by Rian Johnson, the "Last Jedi" director who said it's impossible to present Williams to an audience without sounding "too grandiose, like I'm dedicating a national park." On this night, however, Williams focused only on material that was new and unique to "Last Jedi," and stayed away from the soul-stirring "Star Wars" melodies. https://www.myjournalcourier.com/news/article/Rare-concert-gives-Oscar-nominated-composers-an-12718076.php Pieter Boelen

Is this really the best HZ had to present? First 4 minutes of cut'n paste, followed by a bad Elgar rip-off in a Vangelis-like style. Let's hope it doesn't win. Popular Post Ricard 2,245
Quote To no one’s surprise, the biggest single ovation of the night was reserved for Williams, after the five-time Oscar winner blazed through a brief, muscular portion of his “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” score. Director Rian Johnson introduced him by noting that, while the composer is “a legend,” “John doesn’t work like a legend; he works like a little kid sprinting to the playground because that’s where the toys are.” http://variety.com/2018/music/awards/oscar-concert-the-academy-nominated-composers-la-philharmonic-1202714371/ Quote LOS ANGELES—Wednesday night's Oscar concert must qualify as one of the most unusual nights of music ever presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Imagine film music by 22 different composers, spanning 79 years of movie history, played by this world-class orchestra with four different conductors – augmented by such offbeat instruments as accordion, mandolin, sitar, erhu and synthesizers – and performed while imagery from many films was projected on a screen above. The content ranged from classically symphonic to jazz to hybrid orchestra-with-electronics, and each piece was introduced by a major actor or director. http://www.filmmusicsociety.org/news_events/features/2018/030118.html Quote "They made us go alphabetically," Zimmer said.
