  2. He's actually conducting "Rialto Ripples". It's fresh in his mind since the Jurassic Park set.

  3. "The recording studio phase of the work is not a place for improvisation. But Williams delights in spontaneous impulse. This time he’s concerned about a brief scene in which three ghosts sing a Christmas carol. This has been set up to “Deck the Halls,” but Williams is not happy with this choice, even though it is a secular carol chosen to avoid giving offense to any religious group. “Why should there be anything from the Muggles world at Hogwarts?” he asked. So at night, he wrote a little tune for a new carol, and then he amused himself by producing the lyrics too." Source

  4. The first one sounded a bit like Vader's theme to me, whereas the second one sounded like a Williams SW track played backwards. I quite like it though. And bonus points for piano duet.

  5. I was just sent an old newspaper clipping from 1968 (from a fellow Norwegian who might be lurking here) which says that Williams wrote a song for his then-mother-in-law Lurene Tuttle, a song that was featured in her TV show JULIA (1968-1971). I've been unable to find anything in terms of video or music files online, so any help appreciated in tracking down this obscure Williams song. The series' theme and score was otherwise (mostly) by Elmer Bernstein.

  9. The Lost World: Jurassic Park by John Williams. This was my first score album by the man (had just SW Skywalker Symphony before that). Sounds even better now than it did back in 1997. And it is also one of the most unique blockbuster scores of his career that receives a highly enjoyable expansion with no real dull spots. It's great from start to finish. Karol

  11. That looks thoroughly mediocre. I've become really conscious of how generic and homogenised Marvel films look since watching that cinematography analysis video. Nothing in that trailer suggests anything we haven't seen ad nauseum recently.

  13. Great to hear some less often (never) performed JW pieces. I think the inclusion of more obscure pieces that cover different ground could really break up the greatest hits nature of most JW music concerts that present 1 full blast soaring melody after another.

  15. Wow! I mean, the music isn't super exceptional or anything, but parts are pretty great and it's just super cool to see and hear. And did you guys notice -- the first cue's sheet music said "Orchestrated by William Ross"!!!! I know this was already on IMDB, but that's not a very reliable source of information so I don't think anyone really took it seriously. It was all speculation.

  21. Here's the original story: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-ca-mn-rogue-one-gareth-edwards-20161201-story.html Interesting comments on "documentary style." I'm sure he's still bitter, but at the same time he must be happy to see a film being made that explores the SW universe in interesting ways like his Clone Wars series, and presumably relies a little less on fan service. I'm sure it's not as daring as George would like (after all, its vehicles, etc. will likely be very close to the OT) but at least it's a step forward from TFA in that direction, presumably!

  25. 1) Yes, why not! 2) indeed, I don't list the Lockhart concerts on my website, but it give an idea of some tracks he directed in the past years, when sharing the podium with JW. If someone had access to the programs of all Lockhart past concerts, it would be a good source of information!

  27. I do confess a certain affection for it as well. Delightfully playful although with a melancholy side as well. Father's Theme is just heartbreaking, the concert arrangement one of my favourites.

  28. I just purchased a score which I've had digitally for years in mp3, John Williams' Catch Me If You Can. Brilliant score, so I thought it good that I add it to my collection.

  29. @Bespin: 1) Can't a concert that was not broadcast on radio have been recorded for a CD? 2) Are you sure it's not possible that you missed any relevant concerts? I know your website is very comprehensive, but everyone missed the concert this thread discusses and didn't know about it until half a year later! On an unrelated note, man that Men of the Yorktown March is incredible (I'd never really heard it before). Reminds me why I love JW! Stunning! Particularly this melody (here to 1:32): Gorgeously romantic. I've listened to this piece repeatedly (the Pops version) since I got home from school today.

  31. It's a very tiny thing, this teeth issue, and I'm surprised it was made into a big deal, but I agree that MV's response was rather on the 'smartypants' side. A bit of humility and a straighforward apology (sans attitude) would have been better.

  37. A nice review Blume! And it is a great score although as I am wont of repeating MOH Frontline is even better, a more mature take on the subject while also reaching for something more operatic and ambitious and cinematic. There is very evident love Giacchino has for the music of the film music masters and his idols and role models but I don't it ever becomes too distracting, more of a tip of the hat to composers like Goldsmith and Williams. One of the things the video game format allows a composer to do is to roam a bit more freely and since the timing isn't down to a millisecond trying to catch the action on-screen like with a film score there usually is allowance to dwell on the development of motifs, themes and ideas and give them a rounded character. This means these pieces of music can be less vulnerable to the changes of pace often happening in film but also have the added challenge of having to encompass a single or multiple moods in a succint manner without being too specific to any dramatic beat (unless scoring a cut scene in cinematic style). This can also result very easily in very episodic musical vignette-like scoring where each piece presents a new idea without any relationship between the tracks on the album so that they become illustrations of single mood whether frenetic action, heroism or suspense. While no relation between these tracks is absolutely necessary per se, in programmatic music with a narrative like MOH some kind of musical thread running through it is an asset and Giacchino does from the start follow his role models like Williams and employs themes and motifs like in any film score to bind the whole thing together and give it a coherence.
