Every time this gets bumped I still can't believe we're getting another one of these scores so soon, shit. New director, new approach, same old Johnny. Kinda weird to think that we're now closer in time to Last Jedi's release date than to Force Awakens'....5 points

John Williams begins recording Star Wars Episode VIII score today in Los Angeles
David Story and 3 others reacted to crumbs for a topic
It would probably be the most momentous achievement in film score history to have one composer write 9 scores for one film series over a span of 42 years. Take that, John Barry! In fact, I'll bet money on it now: the Oscars will give him his 6th Oscar for Episode IX, if he finishes 3 trilogies of trilogies. It'll basically be his "lifetime achievement" award in disguise, and warmly bookend the Oscar he scored for the first film.4 points -

It's not unheard of. My other idol is David Attenborough, who's still going strong at nearly 91. He's even touring Australia right now doing speaking tours, so he's not even slowing down! I'd be lying if I didn't admit I'm anxious about JW, but at this stage I'm just grateful for every new score we're lucky to hear. That he's even writing any scores in his mid-80s is truly remarkable and a gift.2 points

John Williams begins recording Star Wars Episode VIII score today in Los Angeles

His last score needs to be for his own biopic! Which will be a jazz score up until the 70s, when it will switch to his symphonic style.2 points -
Yep! And that's also why he definitely won't get one for Episode VIII.2 points

In this excerpt from a 1997 Pops concert Williams performed a specially-arranged medley of Star Wars music where he used actual bits of cues ("Imperial Attack", "Snow Battle", "This is not a Cave") from the original scores. I think it's the only time he did that. Love that he conducts with a stopwatch at hand2 points

We're a little spoiled. Eight scores in the one series, spanning four decades. Just brilliant!2 points -
Well there's been a huge evolution in his action writing style over the years but he's also a chameleon writer generally. The BFG proved he can seamlessly slip back into a writing style we thought he left behind 15 years ago. The interesting thing about Star Wars is that every score still sounds uniquely 'Star Wars-ian' while being uniquely different from the score that came before it.2 points

JNH has started doing vlogs on his facebook page, where he plays piano and talks about himself and his work. And he says he'll be doing some behind the scenes stuff, so hopefully from recording sessions and we'll get to see his writing and recording process. Geez the wait was starting to get to me! As stated before general public tickets will likely go on sale around the and of April/beginning of May. However selection will be somewhat limited. Ticket re-sell sites like Stubhub and Ticketzoom will have people posting their seats for sale shortly and their inventory will change all the time. These will start as seats from Bowl subscribers and the selection will be a lot more than what will be available on Ticketmaster. However you will pay a premium, so shop wisely. Now I need to make some crazy travel arrangements as I need to be on a cruise ship by 2pm EST on the Satruday, and the ship sials from Florida. Hmmmm....1 point

Tintin might have more cohesive and complex action music but I prefer TFA. It's much more of an "emotional journey" and features one of the best Williams themes this millennium (and perhaps ever).1 point -

I prefer Tintin. I find it more musically interesting than TFA on the whole. However, 'The Jedi Steps and Finale' is the best track out of both scores.1 point -

Cool. Thanks for posting the video. I'm sure I watched that in my youth, but I got a lot more out of it now. Too bad it wasn't on a more recent telecast, or I know the MP3 of that arrangement would have been on iTunes before the telecast was over.1 point

Well, I Can Fly Anything is also very much in that vein. I'm really not familiar enough with JW's output to judge whether there's been a change, but it's interesting to consider. One thing I do wonder... Is there any chance that this supposed change is really simply due to JW's internal artistic instincts? I'd be interested in hearing from the really musical people here on this. For instance, I'm not sure if it's always been this way, but some recent concert works of his have had some really "crazy" passages -- total orchestral madness (possibly even "atonality"?) Could JW have just had an artistic instinct to go a little more "crazy" and seemingly less structured? I'm just rambling here from a point of low musical intelligence, of course, so I could be totally off base here. Just something that came to mind as a possibility. We might already have most from the docs, I don't know.1 point

Serendipity Watched this over the holidays. A small classic from 2001, with a silly plot but really nice performances by John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Piven, Eugene Levy, and Molly Shannon make it entirely watchable. Nice wintry imagery in New York City doesn't hurt either, Silvestri scored it, but I don't remember anything about the score.1 point -

Score Rating: The Paper Chase
martybmusic reacted to Thor for a topic
I really like this score. Displays Williams in at least two modes -- the elegant 70s love theme and the pure baroque pastiche. The film is quite good, although the Kevin character is one of the most uncharismatic and unsympathetic characters I've seen onscreen. Also, the tone is quite weird, from serious academic drama to wacky vaudeville comedy. But I guess that's what makes the score so entertaining too. I voted 7/10.1 point
