  3. This might the reason the studios actually talk to each other to thrash out a mutually beneficial arrangement. Anyway, Episode 9 has to come out after Kenobi. This is so that Ewan McGregor can star as a decently-scripted Obi-Wan in a uniquely-toned ultimate franchise-binding film all about the Force; Obi-Wan's coming to terms with his new role in a changed galaxy; his slow-burning shepherding as he watches a young Luke from a distance, carefully drip-feeding ideas about the Force and working to keep him hidden. All the while he practices his own meditation, learns more from Force-ghost Qui-Gon (Neeson, of course), maybe goes off planet to visit Yoda or research how ancient Jedi turned their own back from the dark side, finding it will all be about family, and realising his path to redemption will be through Luke...leading perhaps closely up to Episode IV from this angle. This will all be so that, in Episode 9, Alec Guiness Force-ghost can help Luke through a final hurdle of rebuilding the Jedi order or whatever the spiritual climax will be. Such a film could link the prequels, originals and spin-offs for a satisfying end to the 'four trilogies'... ...but I doubt they'll be that adventurous.

  4. I actually really like Augie's, but it certainly is an unusual addition to the Star Wars musical universe. I'm not a big fan of the album versions synths, but I can look past those and enjoy the percussion and brass. The children's choir isn't awful (like in the album version of Victory Celebration).

  5. Yes. It's a top ten, maybe even top five track for me. I also love "Journey to Rouge City", which has a similar feel.

  6. I agree. I'm excited to listen to this new album as soon as possible. Whatever format it first arrives into my computer or phone will be how I first hear it. Can't wait!

  7. Conceptually, Augie's Municipal Band is excellent. Disguising the emperor's theme in a major-key brassy fanfare to denote Palpy's secret success is genius. Sadly the children's choir "ya-ya" nonsense and strange electronics completely overshadow the merits of that concept. Probably the only real blip in an otherwise outstanding score. If it was a traditionally orchestrated fanfare like The Flag Parade, I think it would be one of the best.

  8. After more listening, I think I can brand this score as JNH's masterpiece. This is a magnificent score. And I might now say my favorite of 2016.

  11. It's very clear that by now Lucas' views on Star Wars have involved considerably since 1977. Obviously, I don't know what's going through Lucas' head right now. I just feel like he's understandably very protective of Star Wars, and while I don't know all the details it seems like he really invested a lot in the transition process because he cared what happened to his "baby" as he's called it. Then again, the fact that he even sold it at all shows that he must have been ready for the possibility that things would diverge wildly from what he would have done.

  12. Clone Wars is relatively good. But I admit I watched it a while back and don't remember a great deal of it anymore. Rebels is entertaining. It's got some very good stuff in it. Plus some quite silly bits (including one thing that REALLY crossed a line for me). But still.... when it's good, it is the best Star Wars that isn't the films!

  13. Please don't call film music cues "songs". My favorite score is either Temple of Doom, Hook, or Empire Strikes Back depending on the day, with my favorite cue within each I guess being Indy Takes Charge, Finale, and The End of Hook, something like that. What about you?

  17. I feel that way with Malick's latest, but in Days of Heaven, the imagery seems to be an essential character to the work. And as I said above, it helps that the film is isolated to the one location. The swaying wheat, endless dunes, working gatherers in the distance, it all enhances the slow passings of Middle America. It's why I admire it, because Malick's visuals don't feel obnoxious, but rather necessary.

  18. Episode IX definitely won't be the last episode, but it will probably be the last story with Luke Skywalker. I guess it'll follow Rey's children and Rey will be relegated to the Mon Mothma role.

  19. At the time, this was called something like The Millennium Orchestra or similar. Williams said in an interview that it was in fact the Baltimore Symphony. He wanted to bring in the Boston Symphony but they were already scheduled for a Pops New Year's concert.

  20. I'm not a huge fan of Augie but I love how Williams occasionally gets the chance to inject these bizarre musical cues into the series. There's all the weird source music, Ewok Celebration, Padmé's Ruminations, etc. I love when he expands the musical palette of the series, for better or worse.

I'd say he's fast tracking this because he wants the prestige of starting the inevitable wave of politically-focused protest films, in response to the current administration. What better way than with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep at your side? It just screams Oscar-bait though, unfortunately.

  26. I'd say it's gathering dust in his ever-growing pile of 'developed for a while then lost interest' projects, underneath Robopocalypse and Montezuma. Personally I'm not fussed about Spielberg's next drama, but Mortara struck me as the more interesting musical challenge for Williams; I can already imagine the score for The Post. Maybe if we're lucky the film will focus on the espionage aspects of the story and we'll get shades of Nixon/JFK? I guess we can assume Williams will move on to RPO once he finishes TLJ sessions in April, then score The Post later this year? A May production start pushes the first cut back to ~August.

The problem is that he still cares about the Oscars. If he didn't care about the awards he would be doing much more challenging stuff. It's not like he needs the publicity anyways... And also it seems something happened after Munich. I seem to recall some controversy back then that scared the Berg out of doing that kind of movies ever again. Although hardly perfect, at least it took a risk.

What the hell? EDIT: Oh, I see Crumbs had literally the exact same reaction haha. It's too bad that Mortara is delayed or cancelled, just because it's what I'd been imagining as the next Williams score for a long time and it seemed rather unique and I was really curious about what he might do. However, I don't really care since we'll still get two scores this fall/winter anyway. I can see why Spielberg wants to rush The Post.

  32. For some reason I've been too lazy to offer my thoughts on this film until now. There are a few general things I want to note. First, it didn't completely draw me in emotionally. Star Wars rarely does, to be honest. La La Land and Titanic, for example, both drew me in emotionally much more. The appeal of Star Wars for me has always really been other things. For example, the planets. It was an extremely big "Hell yeah!" moment for me when the incredible Ring of Kafrene was introduced to a awesome Giacchino fanfare (yes, as I've said, I adore this score). I loved the canopies and I really thought "so prequel-y!" (I do love how cool the prequel locations were.) Jedha was also great. I loved the Middle Eastern-inspired canopy thing there too. Although even by then, I think I remember the film just dragging too much. It's really incredible to see the kind of effects work they can do for locations today. Even back when they were making the prequels, I feel like what Lucas really envisioned just wasn't quite there. Many locations, however awesome, looked a little cartoon-y. That's not the case anymore. These worlds were beautifully rendered and really showed how far visual effects have come. I think now is the time when George Lucas' true vision of how Star Wars should have looked in an ideal world is finally being realized. Unfortunately, Scarif came across almost as "too bright" to me, almost cliched, somehow. I also really didn't get much of a kick out of the drawn-out final battle. It was likely due in part to me having a headache at that particular time, of course (I don't think the movie caused the headache, I think I was just fatigued). I didn't get any sort of kick out of the Darth Vader scene either. Frankly, people yelling "Help, please!" before getting choked to death is just disturbing, not fun. It was a perfectly fine scene, of course, but it didn't "make the movie" for me or anything. Parts of the film really reminded me of "Full Metal Jacket"'s climax -- albeit a Disney-fied version. People just walking one by one into a death trap and dropping all over the place... You didn't feel anything about the deaths by the end. I must say that I was a little disappointed that this film kind of got rid of the "heist spy story" thing and went with the traditional "saving the galaxy in a big epic struggle with bittersweet family episodes" thing. I thought that the Jyn/Galen plot did add some needed emotional weight to the story, and the terrific Catalyst novel I read recently provided all sorts of awesome new context, I really do kind of wish that it had been more like Mission Impossible in Star Wars (IIRC the art book says that Knoll's original concept had a little more of that). That could have been much more engaging, methinks (MI is always very fun for me), and would have brought something decidedly new to Star Wars. Perhaps the Han Solo film will do that. Here's hoping. On the topic of Kafrene and Jedha: This really reminded me that the Crime/Exotic City concept from TFA is probably the most influential concept of the sequel trilogy never to actually appear in full form in a canon work (at least so far). I elaborate on this in the Star Wars general thread, as I thought the post might be too long otherwise.

  33. I had an idea to ramble about this awesome sort-of rejected location when I was writing my Rogue One review... In the TFA art book, you can see these lushly colored city designs for "Crime City" or "Exotic City," with an awesome Middle Eastern flavor with canopies and bazaars that entrances me every time I look at it. Several versions of the concept were produced, but ultimately it essentially became Maz's castle, which was cool but pretty lame compared to what they were at one time planning. Take a look at some of that gorgeous art: There's more, but not all of it's been posted online. Anyway, Kafrene had the canopies, Jedha did too (and Jedha also had the major Middle Eastern feel) (although it could have been created independently from Exotic City, who knows -- then again, I think some of the same artists worked on both so I wouldn't be surprised if they purposely took inspiration): And, most intriguingly, there's this from TLJ: The Dubrovnik (spoiler is about the dominating business on the planet according to Making Star Wars) planet being filmed looks quite like Exotic City in many ways (https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2016/03/is-dubrovnik-the-exotic-city-from-the-force-awakens-concept-art.html), except without the Middle Eastern feel (unfortunately). Obviously that is from looking at actual Dubrovnik without the special effects, though. Also, that business sounds awfully crime-related and the kind of thing that would lend itself to lots of exotic cantinas and bazaars and such. Who knows. Anyway, some image comparisons: In fact, I just now remembered this from back when Dubrovnik location filming was going on: http://makingstarwars.net/2016/03/star-wars-episode-viii-dubrovnik-word-on-the-street/ (not a spoiler) If they did actually add canopies by CGI that would be a TON of work, I'd think, but in theory then this location could look just like the TFA art. In any case, this new location looks to retain at least some elements of Crime/Exotic City, with possibly more a Naboo feel. And then for the Han Solo film: http://makingstarwars.net/2017/01/han-solo-production-to-shoot-spains-canary-islands/ And, lastly, seemingly the most similar to the original designs are the new Star Wars Land concepts (although I do fear that perhaps they will change it if it doesn't feature in any of the films) (this does all echo reported TFA concept art for the Exotic City in various stages of its development - http://makingstarwars.net/2014/11/concepts-star-wars-force-awakens-falcons-triumphant-return-maybe-maybe/) Obviously the concepts likely look more fantastical than the real thing, but this new land looks to essentially be the Exotic City, intact. Oh, I just found this! http://www.orlandosentinel.com/travel/attractions/the-daily-disney/os-star-wars-disney-hollywood-studios-20150815-story.html http://variety.com/2015/film/news/d23-star-wars-land-disneyland-1201571059/ OK, so you know what? Given this info, I now think that the Exotic City is likely to be realized in full at, and only at, Star Wars Land. But the films clearly are and will draw inspiration from the concept. Gosh, this Star Wars Land looks absolutely stunning. Getting to see Exotic City would be one thing but getting to walk through it would be entirely another. It's the one amusement park I've ever heard of that I desperately want to visit. Although I'll probably never get the chance. It opens in 2019, by the way, in California and Florida.
