  1. Kinda glad to see "Scherzo for X-Wings" is a bit shorter than its OST counterpart. I'm one of those not fully satisfied with the tempo of the original. Push it, Lockhart!

  5. Really can't wait for this album. Something about it being Williams' alma mater orchestra as well as being conducted by his successor makes this release feel much more "legit" than other non-Williams-conducted compilation albums. All the preview clips sound amazing. Especially excited to finally get the concert version of "The Jedi Steps"!

  7. Christ, it looks like they put even less of an effort into this sleeve than they did the recent Spielberg Williams collaboration album. This one could be mistaken for one of those £1.99 The Starlight Pops Plays John Williams CDs you'd see in stores long since shutdown. Is it 1993 again? Yaaaaay!

  8. Well, ideally I would of course leave off the 'standards' here, but if I'm not mistaken this is the first time the FORCE AWAKENS suite material has been released? If so, that deserves it. Of the other "medium" known titles that Lockhart performed in concert, which were left off the album in the end?

  10. The Face of Pan is truly sublime. The harp intro with the soft strings in the background before the flute takes center stage with the main melody. It is effortless and yet achingly beautiful.

  12. For me, it's a tie between E.T. and me… …and the theme from Omaha Beach in SPR. Not Hymn to the Fallen, the other one. Just something about how simple it is in construction, how stately it unfolds, and the aching suspensions.

  16. Well, if I may ... now freed of the Clara 'baggage' and given a spring in its step by both the hiatus and the new companion, what the new season has delivered so far is 4 solidly entertaining stand-alone episodes of sci-fi adventure. Capaldi is (still) brilliant, Pearl Mackie is a delight as Bill and Matt Lucas' Nardole amuses.

  18. People complaining about them being homogeneous or disposable are clearly not comics readers. Much like happens in comics, they'll keep making them like this until audience interest begins to lag and then *BANG* a "new 52" style reboot of the entire universe! It's actually pretty unique what Marvel Studios has accomplished. Obviously, it's not for everyone, but it's also insanely popular so people feel they have to have an opinion.

  19. I said they're getting better at what they do. Not what you wish they did. I enjoy the way the movies feel cut from the same cloth, while still having movies like Doctor Strange and Guardians 2 that feel very distinct IMO. To me, the MCU has successfully replicated what the comics are like in film form.

  20. JP is certainly a better movie, that's pretty much a no-contest decision right there. JP isn't a terrific movie either, but it will never be accused of being unentertaining.. Lost World is an absurdity and an even worse adaptation of a decent novel. JP is what got me into Williams. The score is one of his many masterpieces. I enjoy Lost World for what it is, and it's certainly an effective and beautiful score, but I cannot give it my vote. JP is just too magnificent.

  21. Everything from the April concerts made the CD (except for the "big" selections such as Superman, Harry Potter, Raiders, and Star Wars). As discussed earlier, Midway, Dracula, and Force Awakens were recorded last year.

  24. Stargazers as discussed in this thread- is basically the revised version of 'E.T & Me'. from the ET OST album. It was premiered by Williams for the concert hall in May 2009

  30. Well that looks like a great track list! Nary a usual suspect in there! Awesome to get some of these previously unrecorded concert suites (e.g. Stargazers from E.T., Sleepers, Heidi and Goodby Mr. Chips) and of course the Force Awakens Suite. Cool beans!

  31. Well, that was the original plan and also the date listed on the Soundtrack.Net page. It should be noted, however, that the "general" release date has been postponed to June 23 according to Amazon and other retailers.

  32. Looks like it'll be a great album. So happy it has the full TFA suite!! Surprised I haven't seen someone pop in to complain about 25% of the album being given over to Star Wars music. Where are you Thor?

  33. Lost World and A.I. shafted again. Well, good to see Stargazers and Jedi Steps concert suite included.

  34. Jedi Steps concert version! To bad it contains Viktor's Tale since we just got it on Spielberg/Williams III; one of those two albums should have swapped in something else. Weren't they in communication with each other?

  35. This is impossible, of course, but I also really really really love "Fawkes." That and Born on the Fourth of July are the two that are the most goosebumpingly beautiful to me. But as CC said, give me five minutes and I'll list five more. Also, I never heard "Omaha Beach" until today. Wonders never cease. Thanks for posting that!

  36. That's a very tough question to answer. If I had a gun held to my head and was forced to answer, I think it might be this or the march from Raiders, but there are easily 10 other ones that could take the #1 spot as well.

  37. Probably the two-part JP theme. But it's terribly difficult. It could also be some of his 'religious sound' compositions, as I like to call them. Stuff like "Angela's Prayer", "The Face of Pan" etc.

  39. I moved the search of the ship around a bit and found it did indeed sync a bit bitter if we account for a cut somewhere around the time the Rex escapes. I first had a blank screen between the reaction shot of Ludlow and the Rex leaving the ship. It was long enough so that the start of Monster on the Loose started as the Rex bursted through the doors. But that meant the music that's there in the film is in the wrong place. The first two bars of Monster on the Loose - which is the part at the beginning that's unused - are marked "optional repeat" on the sheet music. So what if they were really recorded as an option and not necessarily meant to be there? Watch what happens when I trim those two bars and leave the footage intact. The music that's in the film for the Rex breaking free stays in place, but the footage of the search across the ship moves forward in relation to The Wrecked Ship by about eight seconds. And I think this actually works much better! Check it out (resynced material at 0:44-2:12):

  40. It would appear that the general consensus of opinion, is that JAWS beats JAWS 2. There is, however, much to admire about the sequel. Neal Travis' editing is crisp, and sprightly, Michael Butler's photography is easily as good as Bill Butler's on the original, and it's always good to see Murray Hamilton playing another harassed character, as only Murray Hamilton can. Then there's the score. As with so many sequel scores, JW expanded on the original's sound, and actually outdid himself. To be fair, when the OST for JAWS 2 was released, it was not really possible to compare the two, as so much of JAWS was re-recorded. Now, of course, we have the complete "original" original scores, for both. At the end of the day, it all comes down to a purely arbitrary decision: which film/score do you like best, which film/score do you get most pleasure out of watching/listening to? For my money, JAWS is a classic of modern cinema and that's a stone cold fact, while JAWS 2 is...a "not bad" sequel. It would be interesting to have seen what John Hancock would have done with JAWS 2, but it wasn't to be. I do prefer the score for JAWS 2, however; it's lighter than the original, in mood, it's more varied, and John Neal did a bang-up job of engineering it. No matter what the naysayers think, END TITLE, END CAST is absolutely beautiful, and is worthy of inclusion on any "greatest hits" package. That it hasn't been (so far, I think, but I stand ready to be proven wrong) is a gross overlook.

  41. Spielberg NEVER fails to create credible characters. And The Lost World is fresh with its protagonist that has changed from a relaxed, joking scientist to a pessimistic cynic. Furthermore the overall mood of the sequel has changed like the music. It's not just a sequel without any new ideas, but it seems to be heavily cut down from its original version. Especially the second half suffers from its lack of dialogue and one action scene is chased by the next action scene. The city rampage lasts less than 20 minutes and makes an incredibly stocky impression. However, the trailer sequence excels for gradually built-up tension and does not feel abbreviated like many scenes of hollywood blockbusters nowadays. Whereas JP covered the topic "man vs. nature", TLW was supposed to cover "infant and parents", but that aspect is mainly lost in the finished film. So - claiming that TLW is MUCH worse than JP is simply "sequels-are-always-worse"-talk. It's inferior because - frankly it's really kind of a mess, but it's not that bad!

  44. Yeah... I would say from doing years of classical music study, this is where about 70% of classical musicians fall. Williams = "Pop-Classical for the masses," not actually innovative writing. Williams is clearly an Opera and Ballet lover, and there are so many similarities in in writing from standard romantic/neo-romantic Operas and Ballets. It's getting better though, since a lot of musicians these days went into music because of Williams. That and management as well as the musicians are starting to realize the value in his music for selling out strict large-orchestra instrumental music while not having to invite some incredibly expensive soloist or bring in vocalists. The cost is already built into the union contract and you might just have to pay some doubling fees and bring in some ringers to give the brass some body and pay a second principal trumpet to give the lead a break.
