RIP John Barry

I haven't seen this reported anywhere, but David Arnold has posted this on Twitter this morning:

It is with a heavy heart that I write to tell you that John Barry died of a heart attack early this morning.

A legend who will be missed.

When I got into film music about 20 years ago, the giants at that time were composers like John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone and John Barry. His music will live on. RIP John Barry.

Oh my god... what a terrible, terrible news. I know he was very ill lately, but I wished he was recovering.

Film music (and music in general) lost a great artist today.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Barry. And thanks for all the music.

An overwhelmingly sad and momentous loss... : (

I had been on Bond kick as of late and his contribution to that franchise, and to the furthering of the art (and his indelible voice) of film scoring is undoubtedly beyond superlative.

He brought great tremendous joy with his work and am sad the world is no longer without him... : ( Surely one on the Titans...

RIP John Barry OBE

The legend of John Barry will never die. His music shall live on in our hearts forever. John, it was pleasure seeing you conduct the Goldfinger theme and We have all the time in the World theme in Dublin 2 years ago. For us film score fanatics...John...WE have all the time in the world for your music. You will be sorely missed in the film music world and your 5 Oscars are a testament to your outstanding contribution to the medium. If I have to play one Barry track today, I will make it the theme from "Out of Africa"...a score and movie that I adore and love so much. R.I.P. John Barry.

Thought it'd be fitting.

In the FSM print mag a few years back (Volume 9, Number 7), it was written that our film score "Beatles" were as follow: Jerry Goldsmith- "the Artist"; Ennio Morricone- "who might as well be a space alien"; John Barry- "the Rock Star"; and our JW- "the Maestro"... Dunno about y'all but feel we've lost a large chunk of that mystique and legacy... This large unbelievable loss only shakes to the to core of any self-professed film score fan- he breathed and made alive films in ways only he could... : (

This is extremely sad news. Even though he had retired from scoring films, he was still a major "presence", and to know that he was around was comforting. With John Barry gone, there are now only two masters left...

His contribution to movie scoring is immeasurable, and it still sticks in my craw that he composed the James Bond Theme, but was not allowed to take the credit for it. No matter.

Rest in peace, Mr. Prendergast; your place in film music heaven is assured.

This is a very, very sad day for film music and soundtrack lovers. :( He was a brilliant composer who just elevated every movie he composed music for to a much higher level. Especially Bonds would never be a success they were/are without his music. Today, I'll commemmorate him by only listening to his soundtracks. Sit ei terra levis! bowdown bowdown bowdown

Legendary Composer John Barry Dies at 77

Legendary composer John Barry, best known for his scores for "Born Free," "Midnight Cowboy," "Dances with Wolves" and 11 films in the James Bond series, has died of a heart attack at age 77.

In his early years, he achieved fame as the leader of the "John Barry Seven" and his arrangement of Monty Norman's James Bond theme led to him scoring 11 films in the James Bond series. His IMDB listing for his composing work since 1960 lists over 110 titles.

Barry's attitude towards scoring film was well known and respected by many throughout the industry. Sir Richard Attenborough once said of Barry, "He's never satisfied with what he does. Every day he wakes up and believes that into his mind and soul is going to come some magical arrangement of notes that he's going to ultimately either entrance you with in a concert hall or cinema. It's because he thinks there's still a peak to climb that he's a great film music composer."

Fellow James Bond composer David Arnold said, "I am profoundly saddened by the news but profoundly thankful for everything he did for music and for me personally."

Barry won five Oscars for his music, which had a unique, lush sound heavily featuring strings and emotional, passionate orchestral composition.

My personal fantastic quintet of film composers is leaving this world: John Williams, Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith and Maurice Jarre... :(

The greatest ever travesty was that he never became Sir John Barry. People have gotten knighthoods for less.

The only composer to score an "X" rated movie that won the Best Picture Oscar (Midnight Cowboy).

I had to do a double take on this post because in Australia X rated means porn which is not the same as the X rating in the States.

Regardless, I love the John Dunbar theme.

R.I.P.

Radio 2 has been playing his music all morning: Bond songs, The Girl With Sun in Her Hair, Out of Africa, Born Free, Dances With Wolves, Midnight Cowboy... so nice to hear them playing tribute to him and such a diverse talent he was. As film composers go, Barry is actually quite well known over here so his death even made the top of the news this morning.

His style was one of the most distinctive in the business, his way of writing lush strings was absolutely my favourite of all the composers, his gift for creating strong melodies never left him, achingly beautiful some of the pieces he wrote are.

A sad day for me. RIP.

From the Varese Sarabande website:

JOHN BARRY (1933 - 2011)

"We are heartbroken to announce the unspeakably sad news of John Barry's passing. One of film music's heroic legends, John Barry had an utterly unique and irreplaceable voice that personified great and memorable film music. I remember recording Out of Africa with Joel McNeely and the RSNO in 1997. Jerry Goldsmith happened to be in the booth, reading Barry's score while we were recording the main title. When the orchestra finished, Jerry looked up from the page and said, with great admiration, "He really can write a tune!" We all have our favorite John Barry themes and scores, followed by another and another. For me, perhaps Chaplin (1992). But that's one of many, and they will play forever."

Who can't remember growing up with Barry's Bond scores?

Me. I was never a follower of the Bond franchise. Even now, the prospect of buying my way into the Bond soundtrack series is quite daunting: so many scores, so little time y dinero.

That hasn't stopped me from buying and enjoying many of the man's other works.

Rest in peace.

I know I mentioned this before but it's worth re-posting. I posted this at FSM as well:

When I was 8 I purchased my very first soundtrack, John Barry's King Kong.

I had no idea what was on it, I thought it would contain dialogue and sound effects. My mom tried to explain that it was just the music and that I probably wouldn't like it.

All it took was one play of the LP and I was hooked.

Thank you Mr. Barry.

John always had that same sound, it was there on his bond and non bond films, you knew when you listened that John Barry scored this film. And his music was good.

There are very few deaths that actually touch me, since few people actually contributed something to make the world a bit better and shinier, but this one gets to me.
