Disco Stu 15,495
We finally get a news tidbit! Thank you Don Williams! So this event was August 3rd, and he says sessions started "last week" so that puts first sessions in the week of July 22nd - 26th. Definitely a more compressed schedule than TFA this time, right? Makes sense. Will

I expect that at this point, have consistency like the Prequels if they already did it once. No! Each trilogy should be unique! The Original Trilogy has new recordings for each film, the Prequel Trilogy has one recording for all three films, and the Sequel Trilogy has two films sharing the same recording, the second film recording a new version that got dropped, then the third with a new recording to close things out. And yes, Don certainly dropping some ... overt hints there. Here's a transcript with important notes highlighted: Quote Well John's started up with another Star Wars, we started out last week. He's got 135 minutes of music to write, okay, so that kind of tells you how long the film is. It is top to bottom music. We've done 4 days and we've just scratched the surface. I think we've got something like 34 minutes in the can at this point but I can tell you that every theme you've ever heard is gonna be compiled into this last effort. Every one -- Leia, Yoda, the Phantom, Darth, all of it is gonna be in there. And in his usual style he hides them, you gotta go look for them. You'll find them but you gotta go look for 'em! You'll be sitting there watching the film go by and there it is, two bars of it and it grabs you and takes you away. I find that happening a lot with this while I'm playing which takes me away from what I'm supposed to be doing which is counting and coming in at the right place. So it is that nuts. And he keeps writing harder stuff for me to play! Which, OK, I'm fine with but, you know, did I do something when I was a kid that I don't know about? But he's marvellous... he's got an energy at 87 that is beyond my belief that he can stand there in front of an orchestra and conduct and know all this music, know everybody's part, whether someone's out of tune or untogether, at 87 he still stands there for 6 hours and still conducts. I think that's part of his MO. He can't do it any other way. And the other thing I can say about the film, what we're doing with it is, we're doing a lot of the stuff to streamers. Very little to click. We've only done about, maybe 6 to 8 minutes of music at like 150 on a click, something that fast. He has had Bill Ross come in and conduct a couple of those so he can get a little bit of a breather in but he also makes comments and things... it's going and he's gonna take a couple of weeks off and go to Tanglewood and when he comes back in September we're gonna go at it and try to wrap the thing up in about a month and a half. It's hard, it's wonderful, the privilge of working with my own brother. It's amazing. Dare I ask... the reference to the Phantom... could he be referring to Duel of the Fates? Yes, the Phantom Menace is technically the Emperor/Palpatine but wouldn't Don refer to it as such if he meant the Emperor's Theme? Hints of DOTF throughout TROS make perfect sense musically, considering the apparent threat of Palpatine's return. Chen G. 3,949
Duel of the Fates could work for the final confrontation in this film. I'd be wierd after not hearing it for five entries, but it could work. Remco and rpvee

crumbs 14,316
My speculative theory is the plot is basically a reworking of Spielberg's abandoned idea for Indy 4, with a bunch of neo-Nazis searching for a device in South America that could resurrect the dead. Their goal was to bring Hitler back from the dead and they ultimately succeeded until Indy saved the day. My guess is all the characters find themselves at the wreckage of the Death Star because something there can resurrect Palpatine -- Kylo Ren tries to make it happen and Rey tries to stop him. So if some kind of mythical Sith artifact can resurrect people from the dead, attaching Duel of the Fates as the theme makes perfect sense IMO. Because ultimately, whether Rey or Kylo succeeds, the galaxy is at the same crossroads that it was back in TPM, hence being a 'Duel of the Fates.' Holko 9,526
A "leak" I read of a great big Rey/Kylo duel, kinda supported by the "Art of..." cover, would certainly seem like a good opportunity to reference many older themes. rpvee
crumbs 14,316
Anyone else a little surprised they only managed 34 minutes of complete music in four days of sessions, assuming each day was 6 hours long? I thought we heard recently that John averaged about 15 minutes of finalized music per 3 hour session (on a good day).

crumbs 14,316
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're taking their time. Seems like money isn't a problem and Disney/Kennedy have basically given the music department whatever Williams asked for to make the score perfect. Certainly reinforces Williams' comments about these new SW sessions being "luxurious," if he's only locking 4 minutes of completed music per 3-hour session. 135 minutes surprises me too. They're not leaving a huge amount of time for re-writes (funny that we all joked about Williams doing this on purpose a few months back, but you have to wonder if it's true). If the film is around that length I'm pretty surprised -- though this would be as long as TLJ and the score itself would be even longer, in line with the last 2 sequels. Maybe all parties are just trying their best to nail things on the first attempt this time, JJ included. Will

Arpy 4,145
I hope we get a new theme - worthy of recognition in the JWFan archives. Popular Post crumbs 14,316
Yeah I was gonna say... the Force Theme already serves that purpose, even if it's overused after 8 films. I think the best we can hope for is a 'Window to the Past' type theme for Rey and her destiny, probably even titled as much. But there's no doubt the film will rely heavily on the Force Theme throughout. Cerebral Cortex, crlbrg and Will
Popular Post Tom 4,658
I would not read too much time into the 135 minutes of music--it sounds average for a SW movie. Like the previous three episodes, there are likely to be cut scenes that were fully scored and such. The good news is that it sounds like the composing part is largely completed. This also explains the Tanglewood on Parade cancellation. He went back to LA to compose. I think if we go into this score without over the top expectations, we are going to be in for a real treat. Seems likely he just forgot or couldn’t place “Emperor” in the moment and came up with “Phantom” instead. I’ve learned not to take off-the-cuff quotes as pure gospel, JW himself included. My takeaway is it’s a pretty standard Star Wars, over 2 hours, loaded up with scattered fragments of the old themes, they’ve started recording with John still running the show, and hope to be done before Thanksgiving. As far as speculation goes, I’m not looking for anything all that specific. I hope the score sounds really big. Arpy, crumbs and pete 2
