What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
Not Mr. Big and 2 others reacted to Loert for a topic
The Witches of Eastwick (John Williams) I had forgotten how bizarre and entertaining this score is!3 points -
What the hell? He's abandoned Edgardo Mortara weeks out from shooting in favour of this? Geez. The Italian crew must be pissed! I wonder if this means he'll aim for a December 2018 release for Mortara? Or hell, shoot it right after finishing The Post? The Berg works quickly when he wants to.3 points

Here it is! By the way, looks like we should be able to see the specific date of the premiere on March 15: https://tribecafilm.com/filmguide3 points

So they're delaying Edgardo Mortara? Too bad, I was really looking forward to that one2 points

French Horn Tribute to John Williams [ 2016 REMASTERED ]
Not Mr. Big and one other reacted to Marc for a topic
Definitely ! There aren't a lot of instruments which in a quartet context offer this many possibilities in terms of range and expression. Trombone/tuba won't go as high as a horn, trumpet is limited in the low register as are most of the woodwinds, and same goes for strings ! Except for cello which would kind of be the equivalent of the horn, strong in both low and high registers2 points -
Cool video! I thought the background image was an X-Wing for a second2 points

After more listening, I think I can brand this score as JNH's masterpiece. This is a magnificent score. And I might now say my favorite of 2016.1 point -
Other composers envious of Shore?

Lol, so THAT is the HGW quote that some found objectionable? Is there a language barrier issue or something preventing the reading of it in the proper tone - that is, dry British snark and not earnest puzzlement/derision?1 point -

What the hell? EDIT: Oh, I see Crumbs had literally the exact same reaction haha. It's too bad that Mortara is delayed or cancelled, just because it's what I'd been imagining as the next Williams score for a long time and it seemed rather unique and I was really curious about what he might do. However, I don't really care since we'll still get two scores this fall/winter anyway. I can see why Spielberg wants to rush The Post.1 point

Other composers envious of Shore?
SafeUnderHill reacted to KK for a topic
I agree with BloodBoal's sensible post. But the statement SUH underlined does seem to indicate he wasn't that fond of what he recollected, and it wasn't necessarily expressed in the most respectful way. Especially in an industry which dictates a certain level of subtlety, where even the slightest comment against your colleagues is generally frowned upon.1 point -
@publicist I pretty much agree...possibly this one will have something going for it on that level since it's obvious why he would get himself particularly worked up to shoot this one now. Who knows if he actually has anything to say, though, or if it'll just be elegantly crafted pouting.... @Romão Knowing Spielberg he may never come back to it but maybe he'll squeeze it in next year. I was kinda looking forward to the idea of Rylance and Isaac on screen together. Also was starting to get intrigued about score possibilities with the Italian/Catholic subject...The Post will presumably be more straightforward for Williams. Glad we still get two this year, though, anyway. TLJ might actually come first now....this poor OST is gonna get buried on here haha.1 point

That's the problem, in a nutshell. Isolated scenes are great and modern, its connections to any relatable Zeitgeist lag behind by 40 years. This may work for a museum piece like 'Lincoln' (people like it out of democratic obligation) but the short period between 2001 and 2005 where he actually did some films that intelligently commented and present and future are gone now.1 point

What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)
bollemanneke reacted to #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal for a topic
Weird though, because like Bollemanneke I found Shadow Recruit surprisingly engaging. More story and character driven than the typical Bourne type spy film. And while Affleck makes a poor Ryan, the supporting cast in The Sum Of All Fears is superb. Seriously underrated political thriller.1 point -

I'm famous LOL! https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2017/02/fans-edit-alternate-music-for-star-wars-the-force-awakens-into-movie.html Somehow it got randomly posted to a Reddit thread a few weeks ago (by someone here?) and this major SW news site picked it up.1 point -
I saw somebody post this rumor from "Making Star Wars" about what Rey gets up to on the island with Luke, obviously speculation but I kinda hope this one's true for the musical potential and just because it sounds fucking weird and cool.1 point

The past few weeks I've been working on a transcription of Williams' "Hello" as performed on the "The John Towner Touch" album. Here's my attempt at performing it: It's not as 'slick' as Williams' playing obviously... Nevetheless, I hope you enjoy listening!1 point

As I've said on several occasions, I DO have plans for a Williams book down the road, the first to be more biographical in nature and thus requiring very detailed knowledge about his timeline. But even if I hadn't, I strongly maintain that it's a DUTY and OBLIGATION to chronicle the life of our greatest cultural minds, both professional output and personal details -- especially those that relate to the former. I've already expounded upon this to make it perfectly clear what I mean (that it has nothing whatsoever to do with the TMZ.com-type gossip bank that you all seem to think it's about), and I feel we're just going in circles here. To honest, I'm a little provoked by the disinterest and casual dismissals of the importance of this information. It's like some of you have never read a proper biography in your life. We're not even CLOSE to having anything similar for Williams.1 point
-
"Obligation" might be a strong word indeed. However, it's perfectly normal to search for accurate biographical informations and details about an artist, but that is mainly the work of the biographer, the historian or the researcher. It's down to what is the final purpose of the research. If it's purely aiming at historical accuracy for a specific project (a book, a documentary) then it's perfectly acceptable. And the researcher knows well that there are intrisic limits in it (i.e. some holes will remain and they can only be filled with informed assumptions). What could be truly disturbing is if this research is not based on any related serious project or study, but purely on obsessive/unhealthy curiosity about the artist's life. And we know that the whole western world is quite obsessed in knowing every single detail of a celebrity's private life--there's actually a whole industry that lives upon these things.. Now, about Williams, I think we already know quite a lot about his youth and early years. Of course there might be some discrepancies in some dates and years, but imho nothing really substantial is missing to build an accurate biography. Okay, maybe not a super-uber-detailed one, but I'd say pretty accurate nonetheless. I don't know what are Thor's purposes in this research about JW's early life. Sometimes he seems just a tad too obsessed but I guess it's not mere stalking.1 point

Any good storyteller thinks in terms of acts. It remains the best way to structure a story. Without it, you just end up with a bunch of events happening one after the other without any real sense of direction or build-up.1 point

Favourite Star Wars musical third act & end credits
Will reacted to DominicCobb for a topic
Yes. And the third act encompasses more than just the climax through to the end. These are of course up for debate but third acts for the films approximately start in TPM starts when they leave Coruscant. in AOTC when they leave Tatooine in ROTS right after Order 66 in SW when they leave the Death Star in ESB when Luke arrives on Cloud City in ROTJ when the fleet enters hyperspace in TFA when they leave Takadonna So if we're really talking about music for the third act, it's a bit more extensive than what's in the poll.1 point -

No, you're not the only one. And it feels kind of sad, not because Spielberg should be immune to critique or even backlash, but mostly because this is the general common habit of this place nowadays, i.e. taking potshots at everything. That's why I likely don't jump into discussion often here. Too much negativity and cynicism over almost everything (or at least in the threads I happen to lurk into).1 point

Are people aware of this Millennium Celebration broadcast w/ Unfinished Journey?
Will reacted to Miguel Andrade for a topic
The "Arts and Sports" segment wasn't in the original broadcast. I first heard it during the 2001 Oscar ceremony, when Williams conducted it early in the show. Actually, I've wondered if this was added later on, because if you play the American Journey without "Arts and Sports", it plays almost perfectly. I don't have the CD with me, but I do believe the sessions for American Journey come from December 1999, and the shorter works were recorded at a later date, which might very well have included "Arts and Sports".1 point -
Yes, I remember discussing this way back when. I had it on a DVD-R in the early 2000s (still have it), and then it was subsequently put on Youtube shortly after Youtube started. But nice to see the whole thing up on Youtube again!1 point
