  1. This is my kind of prerelease content. Much better than endless speculation and fear mongering!

  2. Thank you for continuing the lisp from the thread title! It's like a motif.

  4. It's true. I've tried DX7 emulations and you may as well just use any other synth plugin. The most valuable thing in my studio is the DX7 - I've made more money with it than any other single instrument. Other stuff may have cost more, and I do have way too much stuff, but nothing pulls its weight like that thing. https://picosong.com/wjBiK/

  5. It's a synth patch Randy Kerber is playing on his keyboard

  6. I know we were talking about updating some of our sample libraries recently, thought I'd follow up after doing a bit of an overhaul with the help of some more tech savvy friends. After only recently switching to Cubase I've now started sequencing in Pro Tools instead of saving it only for work with audio. Not sure how that will proceed, I may be back to Cubase before long but I thought it might be worth it to try streamlining everything down to one DAW. In the end I didn't really update my libraries all that much. I am using 8dio's Century Strings and Embertone's solo strings, 8dio's Claire Woodwinds and some VSL woodwinds, 8dio's Century Brass, Hollywood Percussion from East West, Insolidus and Silka from 8dio, Embertone's Steinway, Omnisphere, Zebra, Diva, and Altiverb to bring everything together. Also sold some of my hardware synths and gear to cut down on clutter and get some new stuff. Now the synth lineup is the DX7, some Roland and Moog, and a growing modular system. Rack gear is cut down to a Lexicon PCM96, a Massive Passive and a Vari Mu. While I may have scoffed at the Moog One on announcement, I now really want one. Not gonna be able to convince Mrs. Pilgrim on that bill though.

  7. I think that comes out next week Anyways here's a link to part 2 of this! https://www.soundtrackpodcast.com/podcasts/producing-soundtrack-albums-an-interview-with-mike-matessino-part-ii.htm

  8. Essentially the way you see it above in the excerpt Jay posted: Williams will use words in the score like "Ethereal voices", and from there I believe whoever is the keyboardist--usually Randy Kerber--probably tinkers with sounds trying to imagine how to get the timbre Williams wants. This is what the process has been for me when I've had to program synth patches for music.

  9. Yep another great episode! Certainly making the wait for LLL's Potter set that little more tolerable. Speaking of, @PoggoAOTS hope you've seen the huge 7CD expanded Harry Potter/John Williams set that LaLa Land Records announced. No doubt you'll have a few copies turning up at the MSO office! 😎

  10. My resolution for the new year will be to be very, very relaxed about upcoming expansions. Yes, I would love Hook and Far and Away, or the Terminal or Catch Me If You Can, but... God, we've been spoiled.

  11. @PoggoAOTS Devoured your latest episode; started following your podcast a few days ago, and I’m really enjoying it a lot. I usually listen to it while I’m doing the dishes (ugh) or going for a walk on the countryside (much better). Great, great job, guys!

  15. Two things: 1. That is actually where I found what keyboard he used, from my copy of the GOF Blu-Ray bonus feature! You might have to do a little digging to find the exact model he uses though. 2. Not only did he create the synth celeste, but he actually created a VST program for them and released it publicly, so you can actually buy his infamous celeste patch from Native Instruments. It's only like $99.

  16. It takes a lot of stamina for a pineapple to traverse through space, don't worry about it.

  17. Uh, yes, yes it is. I wasn't saying that excerpt was called "ethereal voices", I just made an example.

  18. This one was clearly called "Ghostly Wind Effect".

  20. This is true. I thought I also remembered seeing Kerber with a Kurzweil or something, though. There's a number of synth sounds in Williams' output that don't sound like it comes from a DX7, they sound more modern.

  21. Pretty sure the classic Williams celeste is just a DX7 sine wave with a slow attack blended with another celeste sample. I'm told you can even buy the official imitation from Cinesamples. I think KK told me that, he may even have it. The rest of his staple synth sounds are probably also mostly done on a DX7 though I think I've also seen Kerber with a Nord.

  22. His site says he’s the one who did the Celeste solos. I bet I could check that documentary on the Goblet of Fire Blu-Ray and figure out. I’ll see.

  23. I’m something of an expert on this song, it’s one of my all time favorites. The version in Pour Sacha is by a group called Adama. They’ve recorded a couple versions of it, though they generally have the same arrangement (very much based on folk singer Shuly Nathan’s original version from 1967). I have both recordings, one of which is the Pour/Schindler’s version, though I don’t think I’d be allowed to post them here. The second one is on YouTube. You’re right that the first recording’s use in Pour Sacha does have a slightly different mix. Yerushalayim Shel (or “Chel”, though Schindler’s List is really the only place I’ve seen it spelled like that) Zahav is one of Israel’s most iconic songs, written by the “First Lady of Israeli Song”, Naomi Shemer. She admitted on her deathbed that she accidentally adapted part of the melody from a traditional Basque lullaby, though I think the differences are enough that Yerushalayim Shel Zahav still stands as its own beautiful composition. The song has seen countless amounts of interpretations beyond its folk origins, ranging from rock, to orchestral, to Middle Eastern, and more. There’s even a salsa version out there somewhere. One of the most popular versions was recorded by Israeli vocalist Ofra Haza in 1998, which is a stunning rendition and vocal performance. This may have been mentioned earlier, but the song is about Jerusalem, and has nothing to do with the Holocaust, so another song was used for screenings of Schindler’s List in Israel. Anyway, it’s a gorgeous song that serves as a beautiful ending to a masterpiece of cinema!

  24. I’d love Williams to revisit “Luke and Leia”. The more mature, dramatic statement of the theme in TLJ is so gorgeous, and makes the (also beautiful) original arrangement feel almost too energetic. A new full arrangement to reflect the characters’ older selves could be gorgeous, if the TLJ statement is anything to go by.

    Official Discord Thread

You call it shitposting, I call it camaraderie. (It's also not people who are bored and have nothing to say - we were like this in the early 2000s too). It's the reason I've come to this forum for 19 years, over half of my life. It's also the reason that I don't bother with forums like FSM, which is, yes, far less silly, but also boring and much more genuinely mean-spirited. I also think that the level of musical knowledge at JWFan, and the level of the discourse around music, has gone up over the past 10 years or so - people who write music, who can intelligently talk about music, etc. There's MORE of that now, in my opinion.

  26. I can’t remember how the ABC Family cut handled that scene. EDIT: They just tracked music from the beginning of the cue. Basically how it appears in the DVD

  27. Amen! I too saw the 40th anniversary showing. I will never forget seeing it on the big screen. I saw the 30th anniversary screening of Jaws, the 40th anniversary screening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 35th anniversary screening of E.T., the 20th anniversary 3D release of Jurassic Park (and 25th anniversary screening), and I will be seeing the 25th anniversary screening of Schindler's List. It is an entire experience seeing these on the big screen. I'll never forget it.

  30. To be honest, I've never understood the worship of Boba Fett as a character. He's essentially a costume, not a voice - I don't care what accent he has, but Lucas deciding to update it to fit the canon isn't that ridiculous.

  31. Thanks. I haven't been even been here too long, but because everyone's character is easily shown on the forum, I feel like I know you all better than some people I see everyday. Thanks. You're my social support. Before this I knew very few people who simply appreciated the music and films that I do, so this has been a great opportunity for me, being able to chat and post with fellow admirers. Thanks.
