  1. What a dream come true! He was sensational tonight. Such energy and passion for each piece. Getting to watch his face as he conducted was something truly special. Just pure emotion and happiness on his face. At one point he even mouthed the words "oh wow" during the 3rd encore (The Imperial March) the other two encores were Marions theme from Raiders and the Superman March. And I get to do it all over again on friday night! but this time on the front row of the other side of the choir stalls. Oh and we all know he loves Daisy Ridley, but he really really really loves Daisy Ridley. He wouldn't stop swooning over her. It was so charming and sweet to listen to him tell the story of scoring Ep 7 and 8. He even said (when introducing Marions Theme) that Karen Allen is wonderful on-screen with her energy and grace, much like Daisy. Which got a big laugh from the audience.

  2. If I had to score both a Spielberg film and a superhero movie within the same time span, I'd probably care quite a bit more about the Spielberg project.

  7. It has The Goldblum, which means it won't be a waste of time watching it. He plays the same character in every movie, but man, how well he does it.

  8. Let me tell you something... don't. Don't let them coerce you, don't let them transfer it to your Dropbox, don't let them do anything that takes you away from a decent score, because while you hear it... you can make a difference.

  10. What a wonderful evening! It's just a thrill to see John Williams in person conducting his great music. And I have to say, the performance of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was such amazing. Also Richard Kaufman did a great job. Now I'm looking forward to the next concerts Great to be in Chicago these days!!

  12. It would be different if these special label issues were in fact available in my country. As it is, the customs tax is nonsensical because there's no domestic competition on these goods.

  16. Rosewood by John Williams: The 90's was for Williams a period where he seemed to actively seek drama films to score and Rosewood is among the most unique, a return to his more folksy side in the vein of The Reivers, The Missouri Breaks and The River but this time with a bit darker due to the subject matter and with grander production values that afforded for him the use a large symphony orchestra alongside the Americana folk instrumentation. A new territory unheard in the inestimable maestro's scores prior to this are the three gospel songs Look Down Lord, Light My Way and Freedom Train that give ample proof of his chameleon-like ability to adapt into these idioms with authentic ease (as Jon Singleton points out in the interview snippets in the liner notes, JW had knowledge of gospel music and had even arranged songs for Mahalia Jackson back in his youth). This combination of elements works rather perfectly and paints a very recognizable rural bluesy Americana atmosphere that has a touch of authenticity but stays firmly in the realm of dramatic film scoring (apparently the original rejected music for the film by Wynton Marsalis had been a bit too on the source music side without dramatic heft). Contributions from the soloists like guitar by Dean Parks, harmonica by Tommy Morgan and gospel vocals by Shirley Caesar give the work another fresh layer that differentiate this score from most of the composer's output around this time. While the themes might not be as hummable as Williams' usual fare for fantasy and adventure, he works them into a well-constructed architecture that has a truly compelling atmosphere and feel of time and place to it. The Lala-Land Records complete score release is in itself a satisfying experience but the old OST album is a fine well-rounded listening experience that gathers most of the central elements into a 50-minute summation. Worth taking a look if you are interested in a different side of Williams than the one of the Star Wars or Harry Potter fame. Star Trek V by Jerry Goldsmith

  17. He mumbled something about Ep.9 that we couldn’t catch. The gist was that he’ll be doing it. As the previous poster mentioned, he gushed about Daisy Ridley and joked that when Kathleen Kennedy asked him about doing TLJ he only agreed because Ridley was in it! Jane Eyre unfortunately was sloppy and lazy. Not directed well. The first movement was fine but in the second one the flutes couldn’t keep up, and the third movement just wasn’t very musical at all. Adventures of Mutt same deal. All in all the first segment wasn’t great, though the genius of E.T. shone through. When Williams took the stage the orchestra was in good hands. SW pieces were Rebellion is Reborn, Rey’s Theme, and Throne Room/Finale. Encores were Marion’s Theme, Superman Theme, and Imperial March.

  22. Those samples (https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B07BQP1GBK) are identical to the ones offered on this page: https://www.amazon.fr/Star-Wars-Nouvel-Espoir-Originale/dp/B01N0U9SSC/ i.e. the existing digital release of the OST. They are the same files. They are joint stereo mp3 files encoded at 64 kbps with a sample rate of 22050 Hz. Presumably the correct samples will be published in due course.

  29. Hmmm I might actually get this one. Yes I suppose it is complete. LLL just puts the "Expanded" on the covers because they have had some experiences of where ardent fans have been riled up by something missing from the "complete" release so "expanded" doesn't give so much issue as it doesn't promise every second of everything. It has been their policy for quite a while. E.g. all of their complete John Williams score releases have "expanded" on the cover even if they are well and truly complete.

  34. Yeah...this is a that "extreme polarisation" in opinions about movies. There IS a middle ground here. By no means to do I think La-la land is some kind of classic, and I don't think it merited all the over the top praise and awards it got. But in terms of just escaping by watching pure Hollywood for a couple hours? If was fine....more than fine, it was fun. It certainly wasn't anywhere near "film garbage" or a "stain" on musical cinema. That's not even good nonsense.
