Of course it is. The Crimebuster stuff is fun, and the main theme is a gorgeous Williams theme that absolutely doesn't have to hide behind his more high profile stuff.

I know shipping costs for labels are rarely a pleasant topic of conversation, but:

 

€7.40 to post to Spain (which, presumably could include an air trip to the Canary or Balearic Islands)

€18.50 - more than double - to just pop it over the Pyrenees to France

But €19.50 if you just want to get it across the border to Portugal (possibly as little as 350km from Madrid)

Just an extra four euros then gets it across the Channel to the UK

After that, just another two euros to get it all the way across the Atlantic to the US.

 

If there's a logic to that pricing structure, it entirely escapes me.

I'm very excited for this but I think I'll wait until end of February when HTTYD 3 Deluxe Edition arrives and bundle it together with Mask of Zorro to save on shipping costs. In the meantime, I have TLW, Eiger Sanction, Sabrina, Godfather and Hook to go through anyways Oof! So many great releases this and last year!

What a nice end of year surprise. I hope those who complain about there not being enough Williams expansions will reconsider those thoughts. Plus we don't know if a Williams might've been delayed from BF.

A label working on a score that had already been expanded before is not preventing them from working on any scores that have never been expanded before.  These are also (small) businesses that need to stay in business to keep bringing us music, and often a score that's been expanded before will bring in revenue that can be used to fund working on scores that have never been expanded before

Probably a better chance of selling well considering many people already have a previous release of at least one of the scores. They're thematically related (the theme being "JW TV scores"), so pairing them isn't entirely arbitrary.

That's not the only connection.  Both films are also directed by Delbert Mann, produced by Omnibus Productions, and had score albums released by Capital Records

I haven't heard the Heidi/Jane Eyre remaster, but I have heard MacArthur (just recorded a Spotlight on it last night with Doug Fake, Jeff Bond, and Chris Malone) and I think this is a mistake. Chris has remastered the original MacArthur album recording so that's maybe an equivalent improvement... but the film recording has never been released before and there's a good chunk of unreleased cues plus significant differences in the film recording vs. the album. It's the most important Goldsmith release in some time.

I think, you are right. But it contains two versions of To Thornfield, one from the Boston Pops album. The other one I didn't find anywhere else. Doesn't matter.

That Reivers recording is terrific. This and the Jane Eyre recording were the first pieces of music I ever heard from these two scores, from an old Readers Digest LP set a friend's sister had.

Well the reissues take release spots, pushing back an unreleased score… 

 

and if it were just straight reissues (like et or ai) i dont really mind… but when there is a slight improvement… i feel compelled to buy it…

 

And i mean, if the reissues were done in 40 years for new fans… but having 2-3 releases in my lifetime is too much.

On the subject of re-recording, Superman, Midway and even Amazing Stories: The Mission were done, plus things done in Prague like Black Sunday and The Rare Breed, so I suppose anyone making such an undertaking has the choice of asking permission or begging forgiveness. But it's also possible that since one would have to secure a publishing license, where Mr. Williams' management does keep things under control, any request for re-recording would have to be run by him.

 

After the Disney merger was announced, Neil Bulk and I were working at 20th to clear out any tapes that did not belong to the studio, and he spotted 2 rolls of Jane Eyre (of 9). We tore the place apart but no others were found. So when Quartet asked about pairing Jane Eyre with a new Heidi release, I was able to say, "well, we do have a little bit we can add." The two rolls we found were from the album session day, so agonizingly no additional film score cues, but at least we had alternate takes of three tracks and an extra little piece of source music. I've learned to not look into the mouths of 50-year-old gift horses. This is the first time that the original 3-track master was used for a release of the album.

Yes, the alternate performance of "To Thornfield" (along with the other extra tracks from JANE EYRE) comes from the newly unearthed partial session masters that Mike talked about on FSM. It's a real treat to hear "new" interpretations of these cues from the maestro's own baton!

 

And HEIDI sounds so much better because Mike was able to go back to an earlier-generation source (½″ four-track masters) than was used for previous releases, which also happily had the cues separated in such a way as to enable a chronological presentation. Don't worry, Thor, it plays beautifully this way! Even better than before, when we had to deal with cue combos that had been created not for purely musical considerations but to conform to the Capitol Records album narration. We addressed that to a degree on the old Quartet disc, but our hands were tied in a few places. That wasn't the case this time around! Mike was prepared to consider resequencing things, given that this is not the complete score. But when we lined everything up in film sequence, we felt that the program had a lovely ebb and flow and made for a very enjoyable and balanced listening experience.

 

The Capitol album with narration also sounds better than ever, by the way! Mike gave this program the same meticulous attention as the score-only tracks. If you just skip to the two tracks that were recorded specially for the album, you'll miss some lovely performances by Sir Michael Redgrave and Jennifer Edwards.

Wasn't Jane Eyre on a list in FSM (the actual print magazine) of Scores You Must Own To Call Yourself a John Williams Fan? Back when the only way to get it was to pay hundreds of dollars aftermarket? (This was before Ebay. Dammit, I'm old now.)

 

They said you could call yourself a JW fan without it, but you had to laugh dismissively after you said it. (Whoever wrote that be glad that there is ONE person who still remembers that article.)

Believe me, it was a hard decision to make. I would LOVE to own MACARTHUR! But John will always come first for me and I just can’t afford to buy both scores. I was planning to get Jerry’s score up ‘til today, but I simply can’t miss out on Jane Eyre/Heidi. No one is more sorry than me for not being able to have MACARTHUR, but alas, that’s life.

Yep! The media dubbed it the "Heidi Bowl." It had a big impact on how sporting events are broadcast.

 

Also, it's worth adding to the conversation that while these films certainly were made to be broadcast on American television, Delbert Mann agreed to direct in large part because he would be given the budget and scope to shoot them as big-screen features for theatrical distribution in Europe. They are thus very "cinematic" in execution and Williams scored them accordingly. It's absolutely criminal that they are only available in shoddy, bootleg-quality home media releases. Assuming the negatives still exist, I'd pay very good money for a proper Blu-ray restoration of the whole Mann/Brogger literary classics series from a company like Powerhouse/Indicator!
