  2. From JW, Zam the Assassin has already been mentioned, but I also have a soft spot for Indy's Very First Adventure. Not only exceptionally well written but exceptionally witty as well. Jerry Goldsmith's action music for Total Recall is fantastic, as is Planet of the Apes (which has already been mentioned). Written by somebody who really knows what he's doing! The Battle by Alex North: And the incredible action music from the finale of ID4 by David Arnold. That one's quite possibly my favourite live-action action score. In the case of animated films, my favourite has to be John Powell's score to the final battle scene from HTTYD. Now, which action music is underrated? I think all of it is underrated! My impression is that the listening public is biased towards softer, more relaxing, "emotional" music, at least when it comes to instrumental music. I find it very hard to understand this, as for me, well-written action music has always been a thrill to listen to. So I try to increase the awareness of great action music wherever I can.

  3. Indeed, agree wholeheartedly. The entire score of Tintin seems very inspired but underrated.

  4. Time is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. Howard Shore, and beyond, the far green Hobbit Complete Recordings and the Music of the Hobbit Films book under a swift sunrise.

  5. This sort of shop talk always makes me wish for those The Hobbit CRs and a certain book with certain Rarities Archive. A lot actually. And not for the OCD need to figure out these minutiae but for the brilliant music.

I just want to see or experience Mattris's reaction the first time he saw TLJ. The rage and fire growing inside him until he was utterly broken... Mattris: *sobbing* why did he die on the island...whyyyyy...

Luke threw away his lightsaber in ROTJ as well, in an act of defiance and a refusal to fight. Just saying.

  10. Oh rowan mine I saw you shine upon a summer's day... Christopher Lee actually does pretty well reciting the Treebeard poetry on the Tolkien Ensemble albums. In the Willow-meads of Tasarinan is a quite lovely interpretation capturing the longing for that bygone world where the old Ent had walked in his youth.

  12. The word "repetitiveness" is very vague in the context of music. Is minimalism repetitive? Yes. But the idea behind minimalism is that sparse, yet noticeable changes in musical material make a greater impact than constant changes. So it makes little sense e.g. to take Glass' "Einstein on the Beach" and criticize it for being too repetitive and not sounding like a R. Strauss opera. In some ways this is like asking a painter "How much white is too much white?" or a writer "How much dialogue is too much dialogue?". There is no correct answer - if there were, it wouldn't be art. As for themes in music, I really do not care how many themes there are, or how often they are repeated. To me, the question of themes are at a level of analysis which is not really connected to the fundamental elements of music. There is both "good" and "bad" music which contains themes (or no themes) in all sorts of different ways. This is really more of a question relating to drama than to music. I enjoy both athematic music... and thematic music... ...as long as it's done right!

  13. More than Solo? Not comparable for me. But I love 'em all! So it's settled then? @The Five Tones, @Luka, @Bespin and any other Canadians are going to meet up? Sounds like we have more in common than we think!

  14. 1. John Williams 2. Bernard Herrmann 3. Jerry Goldsmith After that, the number is very small or only one or a passing interest/fan from a distance for other composers, but a few honourable mentions for specific titles: Michael Giacchino - Star Trek (2009), Rogue One (huge subject matter bias with these two, obv) Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi, Mishima, Kundun, Naqoyqatsi, The Hours (and all his concert and stage music work through the 1980s and much but not most afterwards) James Horner - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Cliff Martinez - Solaris (many listens) Michael Nyman - Prospero's Books and The Piano Leonard Rosenman - Fantastic Voyage Lalo Schifrin - THX 1138 Toru Takemitsu - Ran Hans Zimmer - Inception, Man of Steel and Interstellar Star Trek the Original Series by Alexander Courage, Fred Steiner, Gerald Fried, et al Trinity and Beyond (The Atomic Bomb Movie) by William Stromberg, Lennie Moore and John Morgan I don't really have much of an interest in many of the top mainstream composers of the past 30 years, not to disparage anyone but nothing has called to me. Kind of agree with this: How is the late Jóhann Jóhannsson not a voting option? Never mind none of us seem to support any non-white male composers...

  16. Probably not underrated in film or scoring history (that ram's horn at 1 min is so iconic!) but maybe some of the youngers don't know it. What JW was doing in 2002 with The Chase Through Coruscant and Anderson's Great Escape remind me of this in terms of tempo and meter. Some of the cue/scene below

  23. This is just blatantly untrue. The only people that have been explicitly called out online by Johnson and Lucasfilm staff are those who relentlessly trolled and harassed the cast of TLJ. He made that explicitly clear in this tweet: Please, if I am wrong and RJ or any other Disney employee has called out anyone other than obvious trolls online, give me an example and I'll concede. Until then, I have yet to see RJ act anything less than professional in the way he's responded to the backlash against his film.

  30. I can't wait until he posts absolutely new ridiculous things. Stay tuned! The same can be said about the prequels. It was ok when it was Lucas but not Disney? Disney's movies are better than the prequels so I don't care that they're divisive. I want good movies and that's what I got. You can't please everyone. I don't think Johnson was the first to establish this. When did he act like a spoiled brat? No lightsaber battle is NO BIG DEAL. I'm glad we didn't get the same tired formula. The battle with the guards was pretty cool at least. Who cares where Luke died? He says he came to that island to die, so it makes sense that's where he died. Do you understand these movies?

  31. I'd say that, right from the moment the alarm goes off at Precrime H.Q, to the moment Anderson turns up at Hinneman's house, EVERYBODY RUNS!/ALLEY FIGHT (my title)/ANDERSON'S GREAT ESCAPE is brilliant. The best chase music, ever? It's obvious, isn't it? THE ASTEROID FIELD.

Troll! These have been addressed numerous times. Luke died without having left the island. Hmm, I don't remember feeling an urge to see him die elsewhere if that would even be necessary? @Chen G. Which points specifically? They all seem like non-issues.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

Nothing of what you wrote here matters to me or is relevant to this discussion. Though, it's obvious that Kathleen Kennedy is attempting to 'exploit' Star Wars. Really? 'Not being the first time that Star Wars films have been divisive' is not a reason that I can't state the fact that the films are divisive now. But just being divisive this is not "the reason [the fans say] there's something wrong with the Disney films". They are divisive because many fans classify them as pathetic attempts at Star Wars movies: TFA was a rehash of ANH featuring a Mary Sue. Rogue One was just okay... and would not have been nearly as much of a success without the inclusion of Darth Vader. TLJ was a designed to make fans divided and upset. And Solo? Unnecessary and very few people wanted it. So why was the movie made... twice? So many director firings by LFL president Kathleen Kennedy. These things have left an impression on many fans... who feel that films and overall direction of the franchise simply SUCKS. Trust me, the boycott will be in full force come Episode 9. 1. Luke Skywalker threw his old lightsaber over the cliff (behind his back) without saying a word to his visitor, "the Jedi must end", forced feminism, in-your-face SJW Rose Tico, Canto Bight was a waste of time, Snoke gets killed by Kylo after saying he could "not be betrayed", Rey's character advances little to none... and still no explanation of why the Force 'awakened' in her and why she was Kylo's "equal in the Light", Captain Phasma 'dies' again, the Resistance plan was terrible, Leia Poppins (Force power not addressed in the film), Kylo kept his mask off and still acted like a spoiled brat, no light-saber battle, why did Kylo have trouble with the guardsmen?, Luke died without having left the island. 2. 'Subverting expectations' could have been interesting. Instead, Rian Johnson dropped the ball BIG TIME. He knew what he was doing. To think he didn't would be foolish. 3. It's his movie. He has every right to be proud of it. Is he proud of what it's done to the fandom? Lucas didn't go out if his way to address detractors. But Rian Johnson does: daily on Twitter, saying up to half of the backlash could be Russian trolls. Just pathetic excuses and behavior from a very small person. If Episode 9 is not as successful as they were expecting, Disney will take appropriate action. From the disenchanted fans perspective, this should result in new leadership and the cancellation of Rian Johnson trilogy. It also will show them that largely dismissing the fan backlash was a huge mistake. After 69 pages, I don't know why you are still in denial about the reality of the state of Star Wars. But on the surface, you seem to understand as much as Disney. Only you know what you truly think. But actions speak louder than thoughts... and words. If receiving concerns or complaints about a product or service, any capable business person would tell their customers that they appreciate the customers' business and that you have taken their thoughts and opinions under consideration... and that you can't wait to show them your (or the company's) next product or service. Accusing any of your customers of racism, sexism, and calling them manbabies or trolls is never acceptable - period. But Rian Johnson & Co. haved doubled-down. And after he was fired, Chuck Wendig admitted that LFL "supported" him in his offensive Tweets. This is crazy beyond belief. Define "Episode 9 being successful". Being #1 per week is irrelevant. It's the overall gross that counts. Are you serious? His usage of "manbabies" is enough to call him unprofessional. He lowers himself regularly on Twitter... and recently deleted thousands of Tweets "just to be safe" after James Gunn's firing. That conversation only explains his usage of "troll". FACT: Kelly Marie Tran never confirmed she was "trolled" or "bullied" off of Instagram. Look up JJ Abrams saying that those disenchanted with the new Star Wars film are "threatened by women". He assumed critical fans are sexist. All that has to happen is a 25% reduction in revenue from TLJ. As of now, I estimate that at least 50% of Star Wars fans will skip it in theaters. So you're counting on the general public to hang in there? Only $1 billion for a Star Wars saga film is embarrassing.
