  1. I was perusing around my Roku player looking up JW-scored movies and I figured I would put a handy list together for everyone. I've "cut the cord" about a year ago and have switched to streaming services to save money. I've saved about $800 or so over a year's time compared to previous traditional cable provider. This has been a great way for me to discover new movies I've never seen or re-watch some old favorites. Disclaimer: I only went back to about 1970, so if there's anything from earlier feel free to chime in. Movies that are not listed below are all for rent / buy as well. There are even a couple of instances of a movie being on several streaming platforms at the same time. Please feel free to leave any comments / changes / additions and I can update the main post. NETFLIX -Close Encounters of the Third Kind -Lincoln -Schindler's List -Always -Star Wars The Last Jedi ROKU CHANNEL (free w/ ads) -Amistad -Angela's Ashes AMAZON PRIME VIDEO -The Adventures of Tintin -Raiders of the Lost Ark -Temple of Doom -The Last Crusade -Kingdom of the Crystal Skull -Angela's Ashes -Sabrina -Images -Fiddler on the Roof HBO GO / NOW -The Post -The Terminal SYFY (free w/ ads) -The BFG -Harry Potter Sorcerer's Stone -Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets -Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban SONY CRACKLE (free w/ ads) -The Patriot -Seven Years in Tibet VUDU (free w/ ads) -Seven Years in Tibet -Accidental Tourist HULU -Seven Years in Tibet -Stanley & Iris

  4. If anything, I'd say it strengthens, not dilutes, the case made for the ingenuity behind those initial melodies and their versatility to see them lend themselves so effortlessly to a musical context far removed from what they were originally intended to be used for.

  5. I was never a big fan of Across the Stars, but I love the new arrangement. It makes it sound like a theme expressly written for violin and orchestra, one of Williams' finest of this century.

  6. Hello, Some of you are already aware of this, but I want to spread the news to every JWFan here: After a few months working on it on and off, I'm now ready to launch this side project of mine which I hope will encounter interest among fellow John Williams admirers. It's time for me to give back the immense amount of gratitude I have toward this great composer. It's a blog called "The Legacy of John Williams": https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/ The purpose is to build a platform to collect and gather material from people around the world who were inspired by the music of John Williams--mostly musicians, composers, conductors, but also filmmakers, film professionals, historians, music critics and scholars. I want to give space also to admirers who have interesting stories and perspectives to tell and share. The goal is to celebrate the rich musical legacy John Williams is giving and leaving to our lives, for centuries to come. There is a larger and much more ambitious goal at the core of this project, but it’s too soon to speak about it. If this blog will get momentum and will become the platform I hope will be in the foreseeable future, everything will be addressed. As you can see, it's still work-in-progress, but from now on I plan to build and update it regularly, so be patient, I promise it will be worth your time. Taking a cue from the Maestro's writing process, I see this project as a living thing that can be improved and changed over the course of time. Today I published the first piece of content, an exclusive interview with pianist Gloria Cheng about the Montage recording/documentary: https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2018/09/27/conversation-with-pianist-gloria-cheng/ I've also set up Facebook and Twitter pages, so I hope you will like/follow: https://www.facebook.com/thelegacyofjohnwilliams https://twitter.com/TheLegacyofJW Of course feedback from anyone is greatly appreciated. Thank you for listening!

  7. I feel you. I keep asking myself the same thing. I kinda like how the shortest cues from the leaked HP1&2 recording sessions have been merged together (I don't know who did it) to create a sort-of "deluxe" edition, but in HP3 a lot of cues are quite fragmented so I really don't know how MM will arrange them. I also wonder where some source music cues will be put (like the Leaky Cauldron music in HP1, or some alternates): will they be presented chronologically, or will they be put at the end of the tracklist? And more importantly, who cares? I do. Damn italian stickers travelling miles and miles to bother fellow JWFans

  8. I was listening to John Powell's Prussian Requiem last night. Seemed like the most fitting occasion yesterday. I know know this album by heart. Karol

  9. Dracula by John Williams: Superb darkly romantic horror that is wonderful ride from start to finish and performed with Gothic gusto by the London Symphony Orchestra. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate by Austin Wintory: Wonderful chamber-sized musical mayhem for strings, trumpets, synths and percussion done with panache and skill.

  10. So how do we think MM has tackled all the short HP3 cues? Would JW have approved a chronological presentation? Might we get cross-faded long tracks? These are the things that keep me awake at night now.

  11. I like how this is slowly turning into a Removing-Stickers-Lifehacks thread, while we "patiently" wait for November 23rd. Or was it the 13th?

  12. The gulf between musical-minded fans like me and collectors for collecting's sake is best exemplified by this: of all those expanded cd's i (had to) bought in recent years, not a single one was a pleasurable *listening* experience, they all needed heavy editing to get rid of unwelcome stuff (irrelevant scene-specific cues of limited or no musical interest, alternates which are none, redundancies, multiple versions of stuff and so on). So what happens is this: getting the cd out of the shrinkwrap, putting them in my cd harddrive, ripping (or editing) stuff i want to keep - 30%-50% - and putting them back in a dark corner where they remain untouched. The booklet i may look at once, if that, and what's in there is mostly not very illuminating, musically - i just don't care for slate numbers, recording dates and mixdown information (or general composer info i know since a 1000 years). So that leaves me with a highly problematic product i never would dream of buying physically if i could get my hands on it digitally. Those darn broads!

  13. At least he used a theme from his first score for those 'epic' moments, and not just random trailer-esque notes.

  14. I worry about this that the studios will capitulate to the demands of the gearhead geek enthusiasts and begin smearing older films to achieve a faux digital look. And I hate how blu-ray.com keeps rating picture quality of older films based on how they measure up against the latest state-of-the-art digital shooting standards. So to them, an accurately transfered film from the 1970s looks like an actual 35mm print, but it loses a point because of grain - that's how its meant to look, you morons!

  15. Picard delivers a speech so heartwarming, everyone agrees to stop the fighting. Meanwhile, Sisko is about to poison the entire planet. Janeway would get everyone on the casino planet and her ship destroyed, but a crew member would come back through time to save them and by the end of the movie, nobody would be aware that anything happened.

  16. Hmm. I wonder if David Lynch is available?

  17. It would totally not surprise me if these days editors while editing the movie go - this scene needs something epic and bust out a standard "epic trailer track" from youtube.

  18. Got my copy yesterday -- what a lovely little package! Just a delight of a release. Also saw the film for the first time today. It was alright. It's not surprising, but I felt John's score hugely elevated the picture overall.

  19. This is stunning. I honestly prefer it to the other two reworked Star Wars suites (and let's throw in the Jedi Steps concert arrangement, too, while we're at it). If this sort of thing is all the Maestro does after Episode IX, I'll consider us richly blessed. It would sure be re-arranging West Side Story for Spielberg at any rate...

  23. The ending is vomit-inducing saccharine, something neither of the first two movies ever stooped to. It's practically down on its knees begging the audience to shed tears at Andy being a creep.

  25. Toy Story has the benefit of good characters and a central premise that's relatable to anyone, regardless of age. I loved all 3. The franchise where I feel Pixar properly prioritised BO over caring about the story was Cars. However, the Monsters and Nemo sequels were worth making so it's not all doom and gloom.

  30. My thoughts exactly. I don’t mind the “limited 2CD edition” stickers. The only ones bothering me are the SIAE silvery stickers: only italian stores have them (SIAE is the italian society managing royalties and copyright), and they are almost impossible to peel off ‘cause they are heavily glued and they are already sliced in six or seven wavy pieces, as you can see in the picture I posted. Hate those things.

  31. Then the whole ramming of Snokes ship and his death were revealed to be a giant holodeck simulation and then Snoke kills Rey. Kylo Ren is confronted by Data who says he interfaced with R2D2 to deliver the plans of the ship to the Resistance. Ren decapitates Data and steals the Jockey Donut shop to fly to LV-WTEVR where he creates a hybrid of Rey and Data.

  32. I put the little stickers on the LotR CR's on the front when I got them, mistakenly thinking I liked the idea, then a few weeks ago I tried to peel them off and it pulled some of the cover with it. Now there's a small white patch on the front of RotK grrr.

  33. What are you on about? @crumbs was just asking about the recordings I made a few months ago, it was an exciting time, right on the cusp of some brand new Williams music. Why are you such a wet blanket?

  34. I looking to see the movie so that the music can have more structure in my mind as I listen to it. I like what I hear so far but I do agree it’s a bit darker and not as bright and warm as the first one.

  40. Not really. Something weird happened when they put the OST program on CD back then, it doesn't sound right. The sound is muffled and pinched. For the new Varese DE, they took the original 1979 analog LP master than they used in Britain to make the British pressings of the LP, transferred that, and used that for Disc 2 of this set. It sounds much better than the old Varese CD, and is literally the exact same takes, edits, and mix throughout, just finally sounding the way it was meant to be heard.

You call it shitposting, I call it camaraderie. (It's also not people who are bored and have nothing to say - we were like this in the early 2000s too). It's the reason I've come to this forum for 19 years, over half of my life. It's also the reason that I don't bother with forums like FSM, which is, yes, far less silly, but also boring and much more genuinely mean-spirited. I also think that the level of musical knowledge at JWFan, and the level of the discourse around music, has gone up over the past 10 years or so - people who write music, who can intelligently talk about music, etc. There's MORE of that now, in my opinion.
