  1. If you had told me 10 years ago that by 2020 I’d be living in a world where Donald Trump was President of the United States and John Williams had written another Star Wars trilogy, I’m not sure which would have been harder to believe.

  4. Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood It’s QT’s Hugo or Hail, Caesar! A lot of love letter vignettes and less of a central plot to string them together. Found it to be a little too meta, even for Tarantino, but there were many great scenes. Tim Roth is credited as being cut from the film. At an already lengthy 160 minutes, I wonder how much didn’t make the final cut. I found it impressive that nearly all of the music was diegetic sound.

  7. @PoggoAOTS Hi Andrew! Apologies for being a pest -- just wondering if part two of your EMPIRE STRIKES BACK discussion might be coming in the foreseeable future? I know you guys are super busy so please know we love and appreciate all the work you put into these podcasts. In my opinion, you're unchallenged when it comes to the realm of film score podcasts, especially with the industry experience you 3 share. I'm assuming you guys have already recorded the episode but I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on JW's updated concert suite for Han Solo and the Princess, considering that theme originated in ESB and he chose to revise it nearly four decades later (with such melancholic heft). On a semi-related note, I saw that THE LAST JEDI was now available for live-to-picture performances. Are you allowed to say if the MSO has any plans to perform this score before year's end? I reckon the MSO would smash this score out of the park -- unlike the relatively restrained TFA, TLJ is brimming with orchestral highlights like Escape, Holdo's Resolve, The Spark and The Battle of Crait, where the orchestra takes centre stage. On a personal note, one of my favourite parts of seeing the MSO performance of THE FORCE AWAKENS at the Palais (other than your pre-concert discussion ) was knowing that John's score for TLJ was only one week away. It would be amazing if the same entree could be served before THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, potentially John's final entry in the main Star Wars saga... just saying.

  8. That's really disheartening news, especially in difficult economic times. All I can say is -- if Mike/MV/MG/whoever reads this, we love the work you guys are doing and we'll keep opening the wallets to ensure it continues, if you'll indulge us! Here's hoping this is only temporary...

  9. It looks like JW is a little bit more comfortable these days revisiting older, more obscure pieces from his repertoire. That being said, we don’t know which of those he would approve to be performed/recorded anew—from what it seems, he wouldn’t approve much of his really early stuff, while he seems okay with things from early 70s onwards, even though it’s a case-by-case basis. Lockhart however seems to know how to get things from him—during this year’s Pops season he performed “The Turbulent Years” from Nixon several times. So, considering what’s already available as published suites, what could be dusted off from JKMS and the BSO library and what realistically JW would allow, here’s my wish list for a Vol.2: Esplanade Overture End Title from The Poseidon Adventure Blood Moon from Images Overture from Tom Sawyer End Title (or Ballet from Divers) from Jaws 2 The Ancestral Home from The River Theme from The Accidental Tourist Theme from The Lost World Theme from Seven Years in Tibet Epilogue from War of the Worlds Suite from the Book Thief The Presidents Suite: Prologue from JFK The Turbulent Years from Nixon The People’s House from Lincoln Three Pieces from the Star Wars saga: Han Solo and the Princess from TESB The Rebellion is Reborn from The Last Jedi Concert Piece from The Rise of Skywalker

  10. I've been returning to Scriabin's 10th sonata regularly over the past few weeks. It's such an unsteady work, the trills start to be almost ludicrous at a certain point, but it's really a remarkable piece. I'm a bit addicted. It's definitely music for hot, humid summers.

  13. Going off of @Marian Schedenig's recommendation in another thread, I've been looking into Hans Rott's music. Some very dynamic stuff from the guy. What I love is how he often sets up a phrase or progression to go in a certain direction, but then suddenly veers someplace completely unexpected, yet so much better and more satisfying. Too bad he buckled under the weight of his mind.

  14. I love this shot from Shin Gojira. The point of view of looking up while driving by Godzilla, showing the immense size of the beast. The original Gojira’s first full shot of him is another favorite. The black and white film gives this scene a more realistic look as it combines live action of the people fleeing and the miniature set under Godzilla. Plus the scene taking place at night gives it a chilling feeling.

  17. Just in case this is useful to anyone else: I recently picked up the OST to Always and couldn't find a decent high res scan of the cover, so I made these. I think that big underlined text and catalog number are kind of ugly, so I took those out. Original version is here too, for the purists.

  18. I’m going on the idea that some of these orchestras on the planet that have already played The Force Awakens, or will play it before December, may book The Last Jedi between now and December to cash-in on the anticipation for The Rise of Skywalker, as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra did. I have seen orchestras add more LTP concerts long after their schedule for the upcoming season has officially announced and while a season is in progress. Orchestras That Already Played TFA New York Philharmonic Orchestra. October 6th and 7th, 2017 I can’t picture the New York Philharmonic adding-on any more LTP concerts, they have 5 now for this season (CE3K, Psycho, Harry Potter, Singin’ In the Rain, and Mary Poppins). Last season it was 4 (There Will Be Blood, Home Alone, Red Violin, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony) National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center, Washington, DC. February 21, 22, and 23, 2019 During the 2018/19 Season, they played all 4 Star Wars concerts in Disney's series, plus Get Out. That’s 5 LTP concerts. I have seen this orchestra book an LTP concert while a season is in progress. During the 2017-18 Season, the NSO announced the world premiere of Jurassic World on April 3, 2018 for a May 30th 2018 performance. This season, the NSO has only 2 LTP concerts (Up, and a Harry Potter), so, they may fit in TLJ as a North American Premiere. Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. December 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th 2017. I don’t know the international orchestra scene, but if the Tokyo Philharmonic can book TLJ after a season schedule is released to the public, then the MSO may do it, too. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will play TFA this September 12th through 14th, so, maybe you'll find TLJ being booked, soon.

  22. I certainly dislike a lot of music put out by aging classic rockers, most of them are dreadful, but there are a few who continue to be interesting and relevant for me. Fagen is one, Robert Plant is another. Anyway, as always, engaging with you is an unenlightening and dull exercise due to your sour, stubborn, and condescending demeanor. Adios!

  23. Not everyone likes how it moves at a very slow pace. In fact, it's probably the biggest complaint people have. How can it not be? While 2001: ASO is unmistakably the granddaddy of modern sci-fi, few movies have tried (or dared) to copy its pacing.

  24. Maybe not quite, but if Chen thinks the story starts way past the hour mark he doesnt really understand 2001, or know what a story is or how it can be told.

I'm not even a real cinephile myself but going by a fairly large circle of acquaintances, many of them working in media & culture, the general taste encompasses everything from Douglas Sirk to Nouvelle Vague movies, D. A. Pennebaker documentaries to, surely, certain blockbusters or Kubrick movies etc. I probably saw more dvd's of 'City of God' covers on dvd racks than '2001', that's for sure.

  38. Something I really love about this piece is how subtle the transitions between the different movements are. Some of them are so well integrated that they almost become movements in themselves, as if they each tell their own story about how the subject gets from one scene to the other. And by the time you get to the polonaise you almost wonder how you ended up there, given that only 17 minutes ago you were in "fairy-tale" land with the glistening, whimsical orchestration, and there has not been a single break in the music since then. I don't know another piece of music which gives off that effect as well as this one...

  41. As far as satisfying variations on a predecessor's themes, I feel comfortable ranking The Last Jedi as one of best of the best in Williams' career. I don't know if it's in part because this is one of the first, if not the first time, John Williams wrote for a sequel that's as episodically connected with the first film--it's practically a television show episode in that regard--...but holy hot mama, Williams squeezes so much juice and mileage out of his themes from The Force Awakens, it's incredible.

  42. The use of Rey's Theme in unexpected and interesting ways is quite fascinating in TLJ. I'm loving how it appears from 0:15 to about 0:50ish in the FYC version of The Last Jedi: And of course during Rey's Journey:

  43. I prefer the Broom Boy ending for the film. I just wish Williams had continued to build that interesting melody instead of defaulting to the force theme. I imagine if it had been allowed to play out and develop for 2 minutes instead of 40 seconds, it could have been another Jedi Steps.

  44. The film and score really should have ended with Peace and Purpose with the final shot being Leia and Rey sitting together on the Falcon. The music in Peace and Purpose deftly moves from one theme to the next with such grace and fluidity. Almost every theme receives a tender, gentle rendition. It's one of my favorite tracks of the sequel trilogy. It's a shame that finale is comparatively so choppy and unoriginal.
