  1. Its all fun and games now, but remember your enthusiasm for this when you read the following blurb next year. "Due to overseas conducting commitments, Williams had to pass on scoring Spielberg's highly anticipated new UFO movie. Spielberg admitted that he was disappointed but looks forward to working with Zimmer for the first time."

  6. Another beloved 80s blockbuster with a classic John Williams score is celebrating 4 decades of existence this year: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which was released in the US on May 23, 1984. If adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones I love the classic Indy movies! How will you celebrate ToD's 40th birthday? Re-watching it? Listening to the epic John Williams score? Doing all of those things?

  7. My favorite Indiana Jones movie. I had the foldout poster magazine, I had the Marvel adaptation, and I got the collectors edition movie program when I saw it opening day. Here are the original newspaper clippings I've saved from over the years (there's some Raiders in there too) I remember my sister had a job at the local (brand new) multiplex theater, so she saw everything back then. She hated the stuff I was into, mostly Spielberg and Lucas stuff. I remember opening up the poster mag to the gatefold image of Indy on the rope bridge surrounded on both sides, and even my sister admitted "Yeah, I gotta admit that was pretty cool". High praise from her back then. I wear a fedora daily. It is based on Temple of Doom style, and has an image of the 3 Sankara stones inside the sweatband, with the inscription "Fortune and Glory" I'll watch it again.

  9. I'm listening to this magnificent score again now. I just wonder why Williams dropped the Droid motif from Empire. He composed a new idea (although I don't think it's repeated anywhere else in the ROTJ score) first presented when we see C-3P0 & R2D2 journeying towards Jabba's Palace at the beginning of the Movie. Possibly just another example of Williams' inexhaustible invention with the desire not to repeat himself. The Droid Motif from Episode V is one of my favourite lesser themes from the orginal Star Wars trilogy.

  10. I will definitely be there. Unbelievable that he is doing this at his age. But he lives for music and it keeps him healthy🙏🏻. And I am looking forward to meet up with other JWFan members again😊

  13. "According to Spielberg, Williams repeatedly tells him that he’s waiting for his next assignment. “Every time we see each other,” Spielberg says, “Johnny asks, ‘Are you working on our next film?’ Because John has been my primary creative partner across my entire film career. And that’s not gonna end until we do.”" https://variety.com/2024/film/news/john-williams-oscars-star-wars-steven-spielberg-collaborations-1235929403/ I think that answers the question.

  15. I hope he at least considers Williams for the job. His movies are much less interesting without JW, or even Horner.

  16. The Berlin concerts have been my favourites of his concerts that I’ve attended, so I’m DEFINITELY going! My best friend (and fellow Williams-fanatic) turns 30 on the 5th, so it’s really a no-brainer!

  17. Yeah, really nice episode. I really love Storm's voice. It sounds commanding and mighty. I think that it might be even better than un the original. Four more! Karol

  23. Changes in interpretation (which I maybe don't always agree with, but clearly Karajan's views changed), advances in technology (though the problem with Karajan always being on the bleeding edge of technology is that fresh remasters of his analogue recordings sound better than his later digital ones, even if they may have been better at the time). Sometimes different orchestras (his 80s digital Berliner Planets are better performed than his 60s Wiener version, although that has the distinction of being one of the first mainland Europe recordings of the work, as far as I know). In the end though, why complain? If you prefer earlier recordings, stick to those. Technology. During the 80s, there must have been a massive rush among labels to be the first to offer digital recordings of any given work (I was too young to be aware of it, but that's what I take from reading contemporary reviews… pretty much like the 60s and 70s were a battle field of who could manage the first complete recordings of Wagner's Ring).

  29. We sang that years ago in our very first concert with our current choir director: Some spots in it remind me of Morricone, actually. I've never heard anything else by Lauridsen though.

  30. Yes of course I hadn't thought of it that way. Very cogent points. It's just that the actual musical archaeology of the Star Wars Scores fascinates me.

  31. He did literally say "I don't particularly want to do films anymore" but I think as it turns out, the word "particularly" was doing a lot of work when he said that. With the various qualifying statements he's given since, it's more accurate to say film scoring as a whole is not a priority. But he's also admitted to being protective and jealous about his film legacy, saying some version of "I did it because I didn't want anybody else doing it" about multiple projects now. And even though he can come off ambivalent and not-quite-kidding when he says stuff like "Steven expects me to work til I'm 100," he's obviously sentimental and proud about that. They are married after all.

  34. Honestly the first couple seasons of TNG have the best music. I even think Ron Jones's "Q Who?" > "Best of Both Worlds" in some ways, and that's definitely the high water mark of seasons 3 & 4, which have the next best music after the first two seasons... Chattaway's first score "Tin Man" is excellent and Ron Jones was still giving his all... but to be honest Dennis McCarthy was at his best by far in season 1 with scores like "Arsenal of Freedom". Screen Archives has that complete score in stock but alas I'm not finding any sound clips anywhere: https://www1.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/26712/STAR-TREK-THE-NEXT-GENERATION-ENCOUNTER-AT-FARPOINT-THE-ARSENAL-OF-FREEDOM-EXPANDED-EDITION/ I find the Don Davis score less memorable but it's on La-La Land's TNG Vol. 1 set, complete. Unfortunately I've checked around and that 3CD set seems to be going for $280 or more. Maybe keep an eye on Ebay if you liked the score. Yavar

  40. I wouldn't have thought, that he goes again for three concerts in a row. Last time he was quite exhausted after three days, four if you count the open rehearsal. for youngsters. He spipped the last encore "Princess Leia's Theme" on day two and three already. So, I would have thought, he cuts it a little shorter next time.

  42. This are the greatest news. Berlin is one of the absolute finest orchestras in the world. Of course Williams would love to return there. Personally, I'm over the moon that he's returning and I have all in motion already to be there.
