  1. Some reviews I found for Zimmer's new Dark Phoenix score:

  2. I think that the former Emperor’s theme just became a larger theme, associated to the pure evil of the dark side. Like Ben’s and Luke’s theme became respectively the Force and the Heroic theme.

  5. This morning I'm listening to this very eclectic album by harpsichordist Patrick Ayrton. All of the pieces are 20th century and it's very refreshing to hear a harpsichord album that isn't Baroque or Renaissance music. There are several jazz pieces included! The composers are as varied as Gershwin, Stravinsky, Schnittke, Satie, Poulenc, and Copland (it was the last one that brought me to the album of course). The centerpiece is British composer Joseph Horovitz's 1965 Jazz Harpsichord Concerto. I know a retired gentleman who has a side-business of moving and tuning pianos. He was really just there to make sure me and the 3 guys I got to help moved the piano correctly without damaging it. He's coming back in 2 weeks to tune it.

  6. But they weren't, at all. Singer is accused of doing things with children. The gender of the children are irrelevant. The gender of Singer is irrelevant. YOU made this a gay thing in this thread. Nobody else brought it up whatsoever. This is 100% on you.

  8. Anyone else love how beautiful and perfect and atmospheric The Lost World is? It might be my all-time favorite monster movie score, at least in terms of how often I listen to it.

  9. It's just the effect of Zimmer's music - a discussion of it always brings out the very best in people.

  12. This interview with TROS' editor probably explains how Williams was able to start writing so soon after production ended, in contrast with the post-production timeline for TFA. https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1136655/Star-Wars-9-Rise-of-Skywalker-editing-post-production-editor-filming-on-set-tight-schedule She goes on to discuss the benefits of this approach, including getting pickup shots and inserts while the main production was still underway (this was done much later in post-production for TFA with reshoots -- a contributing factor to Williams constantly rewriting TFA as the edit kept changing).

  13. Yes Kylo has 2 motifs only. Not even full theme. That third lower string line is associated with the insecure Kylo Men motif. It can be played by itself, but the association is with that motif and not the Evil Self Assured motif. It's like playing the rhythmic part of The Imperial March without stating the actual theme itself. You still associate it with that, but it's not a separate entity. At least this is how I see it.

  15. I knew it was a matter of time until someone asked this. I always took the use of the Emperor’s theme in The Last Jedi to be a wink and a nod. Just like his use of the Death Star motif for the cloth-iron. It’s intentionally self-referential. I don’t think anyone working on The Last Jedi had any concept of the return of Palpatine, least of all Williams. It’s not even established that he will indeed return. My money’s still on the plot hinging on some Mcguffin that was in his possession during the time of the earlier films, a lineage of his, etcetra - not on him actually returning in the flesh, which would be awfully idiotic.

  16. Johnson knew nothing, he failed to understand the Star Wars universe. Did you already forgot the iron scene?

  17. @Bespin is right. Plus, it's not like this is the first time Williams has used the Emperor's theme this way. Look at Augie's Municipal Band. That was certainly the dark side!

  29. As a tribute to the late Danish composer, Ib Norholm who died yesterday, I give you his first symphony which reminds me of Williams and Copeland Americana in some places with a dash of Sibelius. A lyrical and vigorous work well worth hearing. He went on to compose 13 symphonies, Concertos for violin and cello, operas, and much else. His early music was tonal but later he explored possibilities of serialism and graphic scores inspired by Boulez, Stockhausen, and others. Later he returned to tonality.

  30. Isn’t Star Trek supposed to be about the “best of humanity”, anyway? Roddenberry’s vision of a utopian future and all that? I imagine that’d be hard to pull off with Tarantino’s brand of graphic violence and R rated language.

  31. Homophobic? What are you talking about? You brought up gay people, nobody else did. You're literally the only one who has brought it up, and you've brought it up twice now. Why is that?

  32. Huh? What does being gay have to do with anything? I am surprised anyone I consider reasonably intelligent would come to Singer's defense.

  34. I know I’ve mentioned it (read: bragged about it) in another thread - but I just can’t help my self (sorry!)... ...but I recently got a whole new hi-if set-up - not your standard run-of-the-mill stuff - and it’s a joy just going through my collection! Not to mention these remasters that are recently coming out with so much good material! Can’t wait to crank up Monsignor! Sounds great - and I agree!

  35. You know how YouTube works, right? 8 million views does not equal 8 million people, nor does one "view" equal listening all the way through. Subtract the autoplay views, the double or triple or more views, the views that don't actually like the music, the accidental views, the curiosity views, the casual views, and the views that don't actually listen but use it for background filler. Then of course you'd also have to subtract all the views by Zimmer himself, who obviously goes back to that music for inspiration every few months. That alone is worth 1 million views per year.

  38. If the fans would have been involved with the sequel trilogy we would not have had all the issues it suffers from now. 1: TFA would have given a far more detailed account of the rise of the First Order, and explained its exact relation to the New Republic 2: The map to Skywalker would not have been a silly McGuffin. 3: The story behind Luke's lightsaber that he lost in TESB came into Maz's possestion would have been explained. 4: All the cut scenes with Leia, which apparently explained a lot of background story about both her character and the New Republic would have never been cut! 5: The well intended, but inappropriate for Star Wars SJW pandering would have been toned down. 6: Phasma would have featured a lot more. 7: Palpatine's return would have been foreshadowed more strongly. 8: Chewie and Leia would have definitely hugged! That this didnt happen is and UNFORGIVABLE oversight on Disney's part. 9: More Luke, we know more was planned but they pushed him back. 10: A better Snoke 11: John Williams would have either gone to London or the LSO would have been flown to LA to record the score! As an alternative having the score conducted in london by William Ross because of JW's advanced age would have been acceptable! 12: TLJ Too much to mention really, this one is a mess. The SJW pandering is far far too pronounced. The plot is shaky and atypical for star wars, The Canto Bight stuff adds NOTHING to the film at all. Luke should have been on the forefront of this film, and not as a reclusive, would be murderer hiding away from his responsibilities. THE FANS WOULD HAVE HAVE PERMITTED THIS! Rose should have been removed completely, same for Admiral Holdo. Both take precious screentime from Finn, Poe and probably Luke! Instead I would have liked to have seen Lando. If they were doing this Canto Bight nonsense, why didnt they include Lando, it doesnt make any sense! Luke would not have died the wimpy death that he did! AAARRRGGGHHH!!! TOO MUCH!

  40. This track (and particularly) has been stuck in my head for quite a few days. The theme I marked in particular. There's another cool statement at 3.08. Might be one of my favourite James Horner melodies ever: Even cooler yet statement of the said theme can be heard here: Karol
