  1. The Dartmoor, 1912 track is the nearly 7 minute concert suite combining the opening of the first film cue with parts of the Homecoming (i.e. end credits). I spotted some revisions to the piece compared to the previous performances I have heard and in my opinion for the better. A gorgeous piece.

  3. Folks! I thought this would be a good idea to put all unboxing videos related to John Williams music CD's Vinyl, and DVD related on this post. It will be easy to find reviews and first look at these unboxing sessions. Purely for those folks who are spread over the globe and have to wait for their items to reach them or simply put are curious about the packaging. Feel free to add your own or new ones that you find there. So here goes:

  11. @KK I watched episode 11 and it was finally something I can get behind, it was a solid dialogue driven entry and entertainment wise a far cry from the utter slog of previous episodes in the season. If you were inclined to rejoin at that precise point you could do quite comfortably, and you will have missed practically nothing of interest or importance. Here, I'll even provide a quick and helpful catch-up of crap events so far: Neagan rules the roost. Carol has left the group again this time to become a hermit, but the King and his tiger really want to remain chums with her. Daryl eventually busted out of solitary imprisonment and escaped to The Kingdom, but he's restless, he misses Carol and Rick. The latter of whom has gotten over his insufferable defeatism at last and has resolved to build secret alliances with The Kingdom, Hilltop and a third new 'scrap-punk' tribe of unimaginative oddballs who were at first a bit mean to him but a few minutes later swore allegiance so long as he promises to provide them with "stuff" later on, after the upcoming battle of the five armies. You would rejoin just after Eugene is taken into custody by Neagan...

  12. Yea, I've been meaning to do that! I figured once we got a name for the CD I'd merge and put the CD's title in the subject, but I suppose I can merge now anyway. And its done.

  15. The abridged Hymn to the Fallen was performed for the first time in 2014 at the annual Pops' Film Night. The piece was meant to accompany a montage of excerpts of WW2 films in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. Williams trimmed several bars here and there (nothing substantial actually, mostly "come sopra" and repetitions) and changed a little bit the orchestration (there's an added bass line at the beginning under the snare drum rhythm). So the piece is substantially the same, but imho sounds less powerful than its original longer counterpart.

  17. If they indeed make a new Star Wars trilogy, they should set in thousands of years before the prequels, in the early days of the Sith/Jedi conflict. In that way, that can be pretty much tell whatever the story they'd want without having to do any sort of lead in or wrapping up with other movie chapters

  18. One of his new tracks, I'm not sure which, I don't mind, it's quite good. Of course, radio play will make me hate it with every fiber of my being before the end of spring.

  21. I somehow like to think the Building aspect brought the Irish immigrants populating the West (and thus Far and Away) to JWs mind when he was composing this. Again I do not know what imagery the piece underscored at the premiere.

  22. What's wrong with TFA's underscore? To me its as enjoyable and interesting as most underscore, stuff that's written to support the film but not stand out in the scene it accompanies. Off the top of my head I can recall several great uses of Kylo Ren's motif in more subdued, brooding renditions in the underscore along with interesting, quick quotes of the map motif among others.

  25. Happened to catch The Danish Girl on a movie channel the other day...had totally forgotten Desplat was the composer! I knew within literally 30 seconds it was him though (my husband is still quite amused and impressed by this ability ) Absolutely gorgeous score, and film....albeit quite sad - stayed with me long after. What a uniquely beautiful compositional language he has....I love minimalism and like the way he dances around with it. Made me think back a bit to Birth, or also Girl With a Pearl Earring, these are the type of films where I feel his voice really shines the most. Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander were so exquisite in this movie too, if you haven't seen it I highly recommend! I wonder if the Cousteau movie is available on some streaming service/rental by now? Sounds interesting for sure.

  26. The Nazgul music's identity lies in the harmonic structure rather than melody or rhythm. FotR Sounds so distinct because of the driving rhythmic pattern. Eowyn VS witch king is thoroughly ringwraith music. As is Frodo approaching Minas Morgul. The Ringwraith music is a more defined Extension of the Mordor musical language in my eyes. That's why the Power Of Mordor theme in the Prophecy and Pelennor Fields is basically the same theme as the ringwraiths'.

  29. Just finished my first listen. Its a nice album! There's obviously not a lot of "new" here for a JW aficionado, but for a casual fan its a GREAT intro to his Spielberg scores of the past 20 years.

  32. Yeah both shows got/is getting better and better, with some great episodes. Will, I would suggest trying to watch clone wars first, since some story arcs carry over rebels. It has a greater emotional impact that way.

  35. The Ringwraith theme develops and combined more and more with the other Mordor material, where its presence is not announced by the choral text but the subtler harmonic and rhythmic elements before it builds into the Power of Mordor motif at the Siege of Minas Tirith and the secundal harmonies of the theme form parts of the Witch-King VS Eowyn music. I think this type of thematic development starts already in the latter half of TTT and is more and more embraced in RotK where all the themes clash and combine and form new ideas. It is also a question of dynamics I believe, the roaring chorus perhaps not the right vehicle for all situations and Shore often supports the Nazgûl scenes with the secundal harmonies in the brass at varying levels of intensity.

  36. Clone Wars ran its episodes mainly in multi-episode arcs, so if you had a stinker, chances are you were going to be following that story for a few more weeks. By the time we got to maybe season 3, though, it was pretty good across the board. Ahsoka is the real stand-out as the story continues, especially as of season 5. There's also a plotline in season 5 about two brothers starting a criminal syndicate on Mandalore that is really good. Rebels got good by the first season finale. Like most TV shows, there are occasional "filler" episodes which don't further the overall story, but just tell fun little adventures or show us something new about the characters. Your mileage may vary on whether you're okay with that - I think they're still fun. It's unreasonable to think that a 30 minute cartoon will be too highly serialized. As a side-note, the shows both tended to look better and better as time went on. It costs money to create and render new characters, but once you do that, it's in your library. The world becomes much fuller.

  39. That's because he's so far above Mr. Zimmer, that JW's shit dissolves on the way down, before it even reaches him. You can't bash, what you can't see.

  42. Very cool! I keep thinking back not too long ago to 2015 when we had so much concern for his health. He was cancelling things left and right, looking and sounding a little frailer than usual. I was definitely coming to terms with the idea that he may be about ready to quit conducting by 2016, and keeping my fingers crossed that the same wouldn't be true about composing. Two years later, look at him. Not just physically, but mentally he continues to have the endurance and enthusiasm to multitask that has always inspired me. What are the odds that somebody with that much talent would ALSO have pretty much unlimited monster success leading to the greatest musical resources at his fingertips AND a variety of opportunities and projects to utilize them AND blessed with longevity in life AND a passionate work ethic that has kept him even wanting to give music to the world in his "retirement years" AND an amiably grounded and humble attitude throughout it all? Seriously, what the fuck? I can't help but think about Jerry, James, Basil, Kamen, and too many others who died too soon. Elliot Goldenthal, Don Davis, Bruce Broughton et al who should be working more with better film opportunities and aren't. Thank god Ennio's still going strong, of course it'd be nice if he were a little more high-profile but who's complaining? And then there's John Williams. Every year he's looking more and more like some miracle man. A superhuman! But in a way that cheapens the remarkable career achievements and life's blessings on this sweet, unassuming man, and the struggles that he's had like anyone else. At any rate, he is rather special and I've been feeling grateful to call myself a fan lately. When I was 10 years old, one of my favorite things to daydream about on the bus and in school was the new John Williams CD coming out. Now I'm 26 and it's one of my favorite things to daydream about in the car and at work. Man I just love this guy! John Williams is awesome. Anyway

What's not to understand? Just because Tilton started as Giacchino's assistant doesn't mean he's only limited to whatever Giacchino can accomplish. Makes no sense, they're different people!
