Popular Post Disco Stu 15,495
I've decided to not listen to samples or even the OST itself until after I've seen the film. I admit to being a mite jealous of all the fun everyone's having, but I'm going to stick with it and not read any of the Fabelmans score threads. I don't think Williams needs another 'breakout success' at this point. Nobody can tell what the theme is going to generate in the long run. I don't think anyone knew how impactful the Theme from Schindler's List would become upon release for example, let alone based on a 60 second sample (!). Popular Post artguy360 1,844
From the samples, this score is exactly what I thought it would be. I don't think we know yet that it is (or isn't). But given the press-once-and-done approach of film soundtracks on CD over the last couple decades, we should grab our copies now if we care to own it on CD. The price won't ever be lower than it is now and it's sure to jump a hell of a lot on the secondary market if it turns out Sony pressed only a few thousand copies and they sell out quick. Will it sell out quickly? No clue. But the film score-collecting world knows that the SS/JW collaboration is coming to a close. The Fabelmans is also the first collab in five years and may be the last one where SS is director, so it's special. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes OOP quickly. Popular Post Will 2,215
Just got back from the film! A really wonderful picture — I laughed many times even though there are plenty of sad moments too. As others have noted, JW’s music is extremely sparse, but there are multiple gorgeous moments. When I left the theater after staying for the end credits, the main theme was running through my head on a loop for about 20 minutes afterward. A beautiful theme, and it really soars at the conclusion of the end credits (in a moment that I dearly hope, and expect, is included in “The Journey Begins”). If I remember correctly, the lovely solo guitar cue people are referring to is only heard in the end credits. As has been said by those at the premiere, the musical narrative of this film relies heavily on non-JW music. There are a lot of excerpts from (what I assume are) classic film scores. Thus, the OST is likely to paint a somewhat incomplete picture of the film’s musical narrative — though the inclusion of the classical piano pieces does help in that regard. Overall, while I of course would always prefer more heavy spotting for JW, I think Spielberg’s choices of other music are very well done. You really get a great sense of the director’s love for music — both JW and otherwise. So excited to hear the album in a day — until then, JW’s music will keep running through my head. Thor 7,558
By the way, if people aren't familiar with Kuhlau's stage music for ELVERHØJ (ELVES' HILL) -- composed just a year after the piece on this album, in 1828, this would be a good opportunity to do so. I never expected a Spielberg film to include a piece from one of the foremost Danish classical composers. I remember programming in a piece from ELVERHØJ for an audition once, for a host job in NRK's classical music department. Didn't get the job in the end, but it was not Kuhlau's fault.
