  1. I studied urban planning and do graphic design and desktop publishing as a side job..... who did those covers? FOUR DIFFERENT font sizes in these two lines!

  2. I felt compelled to do this recently, thought you guys might like it: RAIDERS: 1m3 The Rolling Ball (Escape from the Temple) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CK6pdL45GC1ZleS6E6cvCrBPEhDn-xzl/view?usp=sharing I restored the opening that was replaced with the insert in the final film. 8m3 Escaping the Pit https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mbtiKdcaDtzPMg0nSUvC5B67J_Ia8FXK/view?usp=sharing I restored the unused opening section that was replaced with the fix (and tracking in the final film. 8m3 Escaping the Pit Fix (Indy Rides the Statue) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d-GWkIiYAr4UgnbyLx9l0_5fcRVrWpnN/view?usp=sharing I restored the full fix without tracking, edited to segue back into the original cue. 8m3 Escaping the Pit Fix 2 https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N9T0D1yC6iH9CmgAiPRFiEpa57xyGuDC/view?usp=sharing I decided to start this cue earlier than in the film. 8m5 Pffist Fight (The Fist Fight / The Flying Wing) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KIQ48zF0Em6r_exK7VNgzWFmrA3bA3p5/view?usp=sharing It seems the ending was dialed out in the final film, I restored just that section. 10m6 The Nazi Hideout (Ride to the Nazi Hideout) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zva9s9r4y2Q9_LPUZABBgxmefErkcIdm/view?usp=sharing The film version shortens the opening, I decided start the cue earlier instead of adding a black screen for missing footage, however I did add one for what I would imagine was for the deleted "Indy hanging on the periscope" footage. 11m2/12m1 The Miracle of the Arc (The Miracle of the Ark) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cZGHFwrO2X-JeQ5mMMR3LTnPvXTRA5dN/view?usp=sharing Again, part of the ending was dialed out, I restored that section. 3. I think the previous discussion, which I admittedly contributed to, that Johnson didn’t care about the score is defunct. He clearly cares a great deal that he is putting so much energy into this special feature.

  7. Maybe Lando will finally save the day with his army? As far we know, he's still alive and out there somewhere.

  8. There's the whole freaking Holdo's Desperation motif that was only in the (non-film version) credits on the OST. Otherwise, I'll just qoute my thoughts from this morning:

  9. Too Horner-ish. Silvestri: You're gonna need a better composer for this. Spielberg: I know, but Horner's dead. Silvestri: OK, then I'll just imitate him.

  10. It's called being very faithful to the source material. Nothing more or less. And that fact alone says nothing about the quality of the movies themselves. Get outta here with your "film theory." When all is said and done, it's just opinions. And most people have different ones. Again, there's no right of wrong here.

  11. Ben-Hur (Tadlow re-recording) by Miklós Rózsa: While I had some reservations about purchasing this as I already owned the FSM boxed set the reinterpretation with modern sound is excellent and the Prague orchestra is completely attuned to playing Rózsa. Almost needless to say that this is a classic in every sense of the word and one of the best of the Golden Age. 13. That's top Horner. I'm listening to Star Trek: First Contact by Jerry Goldsmith. I love the cold, unsettlingly sexy stuff for the Borg Queen.

  15. They're honestly not as good as they could and should have been. Whether approached from a "true to book" or "film theory" point of view, there are very definite flaws. Personally, I don't appreciate the "puffs of smoke doing battle", not just because it isn't in the books, bit because it's BORING. And that affects all films after the third, with it playing a distracting role after the actual climax of the final one. After all these years, I honestly still don't understand what the directors/script writers/producers were thinking when they made certain choices. "Uneven" is the most accurate description of the entire series. Only the first and fifth films seem like they mostly knew what they were trying to be. The other ones are severely out of whack in several spots (though I like #2 and even, to some extent, #6). If there were one series of films I'd like to use a time machine on to fix properly, it is the Harry Potter ones. They had the makings of greatness, and very nearly all the right people needed to make it happen, but it still didn't reach the heights it could have done. Seriously, what were they thinking?!? Actually, I like the first Fantastic Beasts better than any movie past the second. Thanks, James Newton Howard!

  16. Some news regarding the sequel: The first Tintin has been very successful around the world. Mr. Jackson is very caught up in The Hobbit for a while. Assuming that it’s a success in America, when do you envision a sequel being able to move forward? Is it being moved forward right now? Kennedy: Oh yeah it is being moved forward, in fact Steven and I were talking about it this morning. We’re working on a script right now, we’ll see a script probably February or March. If we can do some camera capture this summer, which I think we could do, then we would be on track to have the movie either Christmas 2014 or summer 2015, and so that’s what we’re looking at right now. http://collider.com/kathleen-kennedy-jurassic-park-4-tintin-sequel-jurassic-park-3d/130315/ It seems Jackson will do the motion-capture stuff between Hobbits... Let's hope Williams ends up scoring it.

  17. I see I made a bad choice of words. I was intending to refer to the given advantages caused by the high sample rate (which can be thought of as a kind of time resolution).

  18. They should get that graphic designer to work on the Hans Zimmer and RCP albums. There can be a different font size for each "additional music" composer.

  19. A higher sample rate can improve the sound quality by allowing a wider cutoff for the anti-aliasing filter, and it can somewhat decrease the noise. But I don't understand why anobody would need a sample rate as high as 384kHz at 32-bit. Here's some good answers: https://www.quora.com/What-impact-does-increasing-the-sample-rate-have-on-the-quality-of-audio&ved=2ahUKEwjN1J7GgIPaAhXDJ5oKHSe7D4YQjjgwAHoECAQQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0DwYZVhHqZVa1azORuJx1o

  22. Whether these new releases prove to be a great or slight improvement, I think it's worth having these to find out and to be included in any JW collection. I wouldn't buy them if they were straight reissues with different cover art, but it's not that in this case.

  25. It's increasingly common in many musical genres, including ours, for mixing to be tailored to the expected listening medium. Sometimes that means a more impressive result, but more often it means a pretty shitty one.
    1 point
  26. Because you write that 384kHz is "outside the range of what the human ear can hear", but it's not possible to reproduce sound frequencies of 384kHz by sampling at 384kHz.
    1 point
  27. That's a rather shallow and confusing argument. "Yes, TFA's action material is much more complex and thematically dense than the relatively thin material in TLJ, but because the latter is louder and more bombastic, TLJ is automatically the better score."

  30. I find the Chris Columbus movies the best Harry Potter movies by far. Prisoner of Azkaban, while certainly visually impressive (and of course well scored by JW), isn't a very good movie overall. It's too convoluted, and slipshod. If you didn't know the novel and the plot already, you'd have no idea what's going on in this movie.... It can't stand on its own, unlike the previous 2 entries.

  31. When they got the rights, instead of jumping into casting the kids (which then of course made their entire production schedule, and they had to rush everything from then on), they should have focused on heavy preproduction, and planning out at least the four movies they knew the story to, looking into different directors, who would be interested, what could they bring. We wouldn't have the main trio played by the same kids as now, but I'm sure they are not the only 3 in Britain who could've pulled it off. Instead, we would have no situations like the director is changing the whole look and layout of Hogwarts, and them going with it, because they were in a serious time crunch on the first one and couldn't come up with anything iconic (the production designer himself said so) because they had to start shooting because of the kids, and had to push it out in December while dealing with preproduction for the second one, because they had to start shooting in early January because those damn kids are growing up, we gotta milk them. Sounds incoherent and chaotic? It must have been crazy. Some closer input from JK would've been nice, too, as of now, she couldn't have cared less which of her characters were totally botched (Ron, Dumbledore), which of her storylines ruined (that whole Horcrux business with a ton of important exposition taken out and replaced with out-of-nowhere bullshit later) and which fundamental core themes of her books shat upon (every single person has to die, and will die, and will lie in the ground with all the other bodies).

  35. Lets look at the evidence, shall we? - The music has been re-transferred from original elements at high-resolution - Shawn Murphy is re-assembling the OST releases to be issued this year - Mike M has stated publicly that he wants another go at these scores to do them justice - Mike M has proven that he has a great relationship with the people he needs approval from, inc Williams himself - We're in an apparent golden age of amazing John Williams re-issues that, more than ever, are getting major studio support - Disney have done the unheard of and put out a Star Wars film with an isolated score so they clearly know the hunger that there is for the music - Star Wars is as big a cash cow now as it has ever been - maybe more? Does anyone really think that new complete releases are not coming? I'd put money on their being released after the completion of Episode 9 if not before!

  36. Where's the logic in releasing two OSTs that are full length, plus a third that's only half the length of the other 2? Bet they charge the same price despite only including half the music! Another obsolete relic from over 3 decades ago that is laughably archaic in 2018.

  45. Good evening. The headlines, tonight: THOR ADMITS TO LIKING EXPANDED SCORES! THE DOLLAR COLLAPSES!! SOCIETY NO LONGER EXISTS, AS WE KNOW IT!!! Here's a special report, from our roving reporter. "Yes, I'm standing outside Thor's house. The blinds are down, but I can hear the SW Anthology blaring out, from behind closed doors. Earlier, I tried to talk to Thor about this revelation, but he told me to 'go away' (or words to that effect). It's not known if Thor is planning to listen to any more expanded scores, but I have it on good faith that a Fed Ex package arrived today, a package which is rumoured to contain the compete JAWS 2. How this will affect society, and, indeed, the entire universe, remains to be seen. One thing we do know is that life will never be the same, again...for any of us."

  46. I got the impression Luke had been digitally de-aged in that sequence, reflective of Luke intentionally projecting a younger version of himself closer to how Leia/Kylo would've remembered him, rather than being remembered as the hermit who chose to live in exile. He looks, fittingly, like death in the scenes that immediately follow. Don't have any issue with the hair. Why should the fashion/styles in a modern Star Wars be reflective of modern sensibilities on earth? It makes much more sense that it would remain in line with his hairstyle in ROTJ.
