  2. I agree it's the most in need, but I think Unbreakable really would benefit from an expansion in chronological order, as well as a remastering because the album's sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. Yavar

  3. Yes, by now they're heading into manufacture for these titles. But one of the labels (might've been Intrada) said at one point that sometimes when they revealed stuff early, they started getting e-mails from people asking to pre-order. It probably boils down to: if they start revealing solid details earlier and earlier, it starts to turn into a scheduling mess and probably customer e-mailing mess when someone gets their grail and decides to try to purchase it early.

  4. For those interested, I did a small suite of the main theme of the show, using the tracks Model City Duet, A Promise and then the climatic Sea of Flames. It's a really beautiful theme that appears only a couple of times through the show, plus the appearances in the Main Titles, but which makes a big emotional impact thanks to Howard's beautiful rendering of the theme, mainly for piano and violin. Enjoy!

  5. Here’s the event running order which hopefully paints a picture. We aren’t going to mention the clips from Mike publicly, but I’m sure those who were there can private message each other. We never said to not talk about the event after the fact. “The first rule of TLOJW is to talk about TLOJW” 😁 - CLIP: Video Introduction - 6 min - Greetings and presentation of guests - JW in London: an historical overview - Remembering the Star Wars 1977 sessions with Eric and Hugh - CLIP: - Working with JW as orchestra musicians (Eric and Hugh) - CLIP: - Commentary - CLIP: The Fury "A-B Comparison" - JW on the scoring stage: how he works with the orchestra - CLIP: - Commentary / Audience Q&A INTERMISSION (10 min) - Dracula: an overview (Emilio) - CLIP: Dracula's Death film clip - 6 min - Commentary - Techniques of film score recording - CLIP: - Commentary - CLIP: - Commentary - CLIP: - Commentary / Audience Q&A - Final greetings and prize draw raffle sorting The prize draw contents (10 Universal Studios branded goody bags - thank you Dave Norris!) consisted of: JW scored 4K discs from UHE La La Land Records & Intrada JW albums Japanese imports of various JW albums DG Store exclusives of Blu-rays & Vinyls TLOJW T-shirts Elmer Bernstein Commemorative Programme with a personal note from JW The 2 star prize premium goody bags consisted of the above plus Taschen books, extra DG Store exclusives, the John T. Williams Jazz Beginnings album and a JW signed photo. IMG_5281.heic Seeing the new remaster of Jaws in Dolby Atmos with the proper 3D glasses was very memorable and a perfect end to the event. Both Eric & Hugh were particularly impressed! They hadn’t seen it since 1976! We had a diverse audience and some composers and conductors were in attendance. Plus our poster artist Paul Shipper (who kindly signed many of the deluxe prints everyone received), voice actor Marc Silk and producers from LA & London. Thank you once again for attending. It was so great to meet many new and old friends. The dinner afterwards was a cluster f@#k but it was a last minute change so couldn’t be helped. Food and service was good (Zizzi). It was a joy to host this with Maurizio and we hope to do more in the future. I love how people laughed at this, it actually was Jaws in 3D, not Jaws 3D!!!!! :-)

  6. See James Bond Music page on Facebook on 2nd April 2021 :- The Moonraker myth started when the expanded CDs came out in 2003 and Lukas addressed the question of why Moonraker wasn't included. Basically tapes for Moonraker were not stored with the other tapes they were working with and there was no budget to go looking. Besides, the 5 scores to be expanded had already been determined. It got misquoted into the Moonraker tapes being lost and that became urban myth. People even started saying the tapes had been dumped by Davout, the Paris studio where Moonraker was recorded. However, these myths were based on a number of false presuppositions. First, for a major movie like Moonraker there is never just one set of tapes. There's just too much riding on it. It's very likely that both a master and backup copy were taken at the recording session, and then there may be other duplicates created for other purposes. Second, in order to get music into a film's soundtrack, you have to do more than just record it. You have to dub it. The dubbing happened in England. Jon's book The Music of James Bond confirms tapes were shipped to England for this purpose. There would have been no reason to send them back to Paris, since Davout is a recording facility, not a storage facility. Now, of course none of this proves the opposite, that there are accessible tapes, but several people who would know have assured us there are Moonraker tapes and they have been preserved digitally. So, basically, a misquotation plus some false assumptions and Chinese whispers equals urban myth.

  10. The initial pressings of the "Complete Recordings" releases contained the same musical program as the CDs on a bonus DVD-Audio disc in higher resolution & surround sound. Note that these were specifically the "DVD-Audio" format, meaning they wouldn't play in a standard DVD player. The reissues from 2018 replaced that DVD-Audio disc with a Blu Ray disc containing the same music in the same resolution instead. These discs do play in a standard Blu Ray player

  11. The original soundtrack of The Patriot was released on Hollywood Records, owned by Disney, which hasn’t worked with La-La Land to date. Much likelier to be an Intrada release. But yes, it’d make for a fantastic 2-CD set!

  13. I’ve always wondered why labels wouldn’t reveal their titles beforehand? It would only elevate the level of anticipation on behalf of the fans. “A 6-CD John Williams Star Wars Collection is coming this Black Friday!” We would be like Keanu: “Noo way!!” And LLL would be like Mr. Miyagi: “Hehehe…” If I knew that a SW or an Indy box set was coming, I would already stop eating.

  14. Had a great time seeing this yesterday. Orchestra and film were great and there were lots of kids in the audience who probably have never seen it before based on the gasps and "oohhhh's" at certain scenes. The music must have been crazy difficult! On the same night, the LA Phil played E.T. live to picture with Johnny in the audience!!! He went on stage for a bow to thunderous ovation after. Just imagine Jurassic Park and E.T. live to picture in one day! 399024842_870077184559164_5150928013439168529_n.mp4

  19. Some people might not realize that I'm a Star Trek fan. If anything Wrath of Khan has become slightly underrated. Search For Spock is probably a more "mature" and subtle work and seems to get rated a little higher that TWOK for that reason. But then people also cite Stealing the Enterprise as the standout track. And it's amazing. But it gets it's clock cleaned by Genesis Countdown. Even without the whole section on Regula One and the in the Regula caves (which puts the score into a whole other crunchy scary gear) you have all of the big set pieces that Horner is just having so much FUN with. Or at least he's letting us have so much fun. And it all wraps up with Epilogue which is to this day one of my favorite Star Trek tracks of all time. OTOH on TSFS you have tracks like The Mind-Meld and Returning to Vulcan (LP version, thank you) and TSFS has a melancholy wistfulness that mostly wasn't called for in TWOK. The expansion gave us Sunset on Genesis and Genesis Destroyed which are standouts. I just think of them as one big score and then I don't choose.

  20. I still adore that line. Every time I watch Smith and Gillan I can't help but think "They're both BALD!" The most understated regeneration. And probably my favorite. Tennant's is up there just because it's so amazing to go from crying at Tennant to cheering at Smith. Brilliant.

  21. 'Goodbye, raggedy man' would bring a tear to a glass eye. 'Kidneys! I've got new kidneys! I don't like the colour'. The last few posts have reminded me of the answer Moffat gave when asked at the 60th anniversary concert about writing the show ... 'You can have Matt doing TERRIBLE things, and then all he has to do is turn those puppy-dog eyes on you and you're 'Awww, you're forgiven'. Whereas I told the writers they could put in as many goofy jokes with Peter as they wanted ... but those eyebrows are always going to scare the crap out of you'.

  23. I just finished listening to the audiobook of 2010: Odyssey Two by Arthur C. Clarke. I had read this book when it came out in 1982, and I still have the hardback edition in a box somewhere (along with 2061 and 3001 as well as my paperback copy of 2001). I've watched 2001 a few times in recent years, including a great 70 mm screening, and I decided to go back to the book series. In the acknowledgments at the end of the book, Clarke thanks Maurice Jarre, Vangelis and the "incomparable John Williams for providing inspiration whenever it was needed." Richard Strauss and Johann Strauss don't even get a mention. I wonder if JW was ever asked to score 2010, a job that ultimately went to David Shire (with help from Craig Huxley)? Probably not, but maybe nobody asked Clarke.

  25. I believe the main reason is that titles can fall through at any time, given studio shenanigans. Hence if they announced a title was coming and then something happened that made them unable to complete it, they'd get a lot of disappointed customers. I would ponder why there would't be some sort of legally binding thing at some point where the studio can't just row back and cancel a project, but maybe stuff like liners and artwork are done later in the process, and someone has to do the final signoff?

  27. My goodness. It’s not that I forgot how great these are, it’s just that when enough time passes and you listen again you remember how great they are. What else is there to say, so I’ll just put out an esoteric moment that I adore from Enterprise Attacks Reliant. There’s a little bit when Kirk is waiting for the Reliant to show up to fire on it, and it appears to flicker out of a screen of static for just a second. Horner scores that blip with a dark blast of sinister brass. Just goosebumps that the picture was locked with enough effects for him to add that little touch. And then all Hell heroically breaks loose. is it fair to say that Kirk’s theme is almost underrated? It’s so jaunty and cocky.

I’m hoping for Hook or Catch Me If You Can or The Terminal or Deep Impact or The Mask of Zorro or The Perfect Storm or Bicentennial Man or Enemy at the Gates or Iris or A Beautiful Mind or Jurassic Park III or The Godfather Part 2 or Gladiator. Oh, and complete versions of Indiana Jones and Star Wars (of course).

  40. I'd sort of agree with Thor on that. I wouldn't say Hidden Life was anything astonishing, but taste wise it does a lot for me than Book Thief does. Is that based on the album or the complete score? The former is rearranged to an unnecessary extent, focusing a bit too much on the more tense, moody music, and less on some character stuff. Either way, I find the damp, Autumnal, mysterious sound rather appealing. Pretty much evokes the UK right about now.

  41. No it didn't. I think the highest highs (and Hawkeye had some) were probably Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But I didn't like the show overall. I think all of the MCU-TV have at least 50% good stuff. They just either don't hold together or they aren't memorable. Heck, there was a lot of She-Hulk I liked a lot. Hawkeye wasn't the greatest but it was almost always good. Just do THAT.

  42. I love Intrada's releases but what is it with their artwork style? They just can't seem to make it look anything other than juvenile. All the non-matching colours and fonts are so clunky and visually unappealing. I recently ordered LLL's Sabrina, and even though I've never heard that score, seen the film, or know anything about it, the beautiful art style actually compels me to listen to it. The design is sleek and refined and classy, and I'm alerted to start listening out for and appreciating those qualities in the music I'm hearing. Now, I personally love the Solo soundtrack to the point where I don't need some amazing artwork to motivate me to re-listen to it, but if I were on the fence, I don't imagine this particular art style would do a lot to convince me. Even the re-used OST cover art (which is a design I personally like) is cropped/zoomed in for this CD release so that the top half of the Falcon-inspired cockpit design with additional background details is missing, and Han and co. are no longer positioned in the centre of the image, but awkwardly moved into the top 2/3rds of the frame (with Han's head nearly cut off!).
