  2. Hans Zimmer, if you're here, please don't ever score a Star Wars film. Ever. In fact, please just retire. Or at least shut down RCP. Or both. Both is good. Regards, The entire film score community

  3. We just want Williams' complete works being looked after and preserved for posterity so that anyone in the future can have access to enjoy and/or study them in as much depth as they desire. Karol

  5. I listened to the new set over work commutes this week and... I LOVE IT! Disc 1 is just an awesome 70 minute program. It flows great, never has a dull or repetitive moment, and is instantly my preferred and only way I want to take in the score when I'm in the mood for it. The old 51 minute score album was a very good one, and you can't argue it doesn't have all the highlights.... but this is one of those complete scores where all the bits not included on that are just as good as those that are, and including them all amongt the music you already knew doesn't detract from the experience at all, and in fact enhances it! I really like all the new music, each little run of it enhances that part of the score nicely, but the most fun is probably the Rampage / Store Mayhem / Car Crash collection of cues - really fun! However the extra early cues that help set everything up really help a lot too. It's just all good! The sound quality is fantastic! Everything sounds very clear and is fun to listen to. For a score that can suddenly go from normal orchestral stuff to wacky antics for the monkeys or other dangers, then right back again, this is important, and it all works. I read John Takis' liner notes the other night and they are very nice. When talking about the music he refers to the score sheets and uses some musical terms I appreciate because I am always trying to learn more of that stuff. And John does it in a way that doesn't go over your head. Interestingly, there is no cue list assembly spread like most Intrada releases? Overall, a great release!

  6. I listened through all 3 discs this week also. Stupid me from 20 years ago did NOT get this film, so I didn't give the score the attention it deserved. Now, every listen is so compelling and captivating. This score just gets better with age. Consequently, I like the film a whole lot better than I did when it premiered. One of the aspects I find fascinating is "Monica's Theme" in The Reunion is played so straight, with so much tenderness. Williams could've telegraphed that resurrected Monica was "artificial" herself, and suggested either discordant or distant uncertainty into the music. But no, this is the perfect musical blanket of love for David's perfect day. (which is artificial). Genius level. I am astonished that there isn't a concert suite making the rounds.

  7. PRESUMED INNOCENT, really? It's a mono-thematic score and already stretches patience at 44 minutes (I mean, I love the score for what it is, but if anything I would like it 10 minutes shorter). I often want to understand the logic of C&C fans, but sometimes this understanding falls short.

  8. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (LLL) by John Williams Today I really wanted to revisit this score, what a treat. First disc is so great, I really love this sound of childhood Williams developed while already having some darker melodies in the second half. Disc 2 is simply perfect, it feels like one single track full of light and dream. Finally disc 3 is what could have been a very nice alternate to the original album, revisiting the whole score in shorten program. So glad to have 3 versions of Abandonned in the Wood which is probably my favourite cue with Where Dreams are Born It's amazing how much this score as grown on me over the years, now it might even be in my top ten (if I consider the SW as only one work)

  9. Looks like it may not be a very long wait for the next one: @TownerFan’s Legacy of John Williams podcast just put out a SpaceCamp Expanded Edition: First Listen episode, and at the end it’s mentioned that Mike Matessino will be on the podcast again “soon” to discuss not just SpaceCamp, but also “another one”. 😮

  10. Here’s a fun double feature pairing: The Dark Crystal / Dragonslayer Two completely divergent takes on the fantasy genre from around the same era. One with a lush, romantic and reverb-y recording. The other recorded with dry clarity and a modernist take. Both with source cues to enhance the world building.

  11. I think they also said a lot of his pieces were "of the era", semi-diegetic, with period instruments and the like. Ended up undercutting their undercutting of this era, the grand heightened movie-reality Homeward Bound and Promised Land give it are a lot better fit. It'd still be nice to hear the original attempt.

  12. It will be the "full main title", obviously. Which, knowing Williams, won't be the only fully composed version of the theme, and I expect the promised suite to be more substantial. Which is why I kinda like hearing the main title version first, as a sort of teaser to the concert version that the suite probably is.

  13. That’s fine for you, I can only speak from my experience with my order. Also the response I got when I contacted them was a bit sarcastic to say the least. I only commented that it might be better if they could send overseas orders with a bit more protection around the cd. And didn’t want to send it back or complain for that matter! The cds were fine inside. I was very polite !

  16. Yes, the complete score coming from the edited film stems because Trevor Jones has the original masters and refused to allow them to be scanned and used when that release was done. I think.

  17. OK, I gave The Dark Crystal album a listen this morning after reading all the discussion. I do retract my comments, the score is indeed really good. I only ever heard it in the film and, as I said above, the whole experience didn't do much for me. The music as heard on its own is indeed very enjoyable. It's just a shame that due to some muddled issues behind the scenes we might never hear the full score on album. Pity, because the film turns 40 this year and it would have been a perfect opportunity to release this. Karol

  18. Just having watched it this morning, i will point out that his early concert piece Spectral Shimmers begins ca. at 44:40, and A Forest Passage at 01:51:08. The first is very much a finger exercise for later Horner and his penchant for quoting and mixing in classical pieces, mixing obvious nods to Beethoven and Strauss with more modern Ligeti - attentive listeners will notice that the Rosenkavalier quote from *batteries not included has its starting point exactly here. A Forest Passage is unabashed Horner self-reworking in compact 10 minutes (much like his later 'First in Flight' would rework his 'Deep Impact' and 'Cocoon' tunes to great effect), as such it impersonates the concert's title by a meditative to heart-tugging journey through his 'Journey of Natty Gann', 'Willow', 'Courage Under Fire' and similar themes, including also the great trumpet/horn scherzo from 'Perfect Storm'. As such concert evenings go, It fittingly was the most emotional by including the family and home footage (his daughter and wife were interviewed, there was in- and outside footage of his Calabasas home). Which is probably the project's biggest achievement, to tie the event so much to the composer and his inner world.

  19. I don't usually listen to the samples but decided to this time...I just listened to the OST pretty recently and wow there is a lot more clarity in these samples, and it doesn't have the hiss that is sometimes noticeable on the OST.

It's going to be great! 🥳 We are all delighted with the magnificent playing of the orchestra, and we are very grateful to the team of the Szczecin Philharmonic for helping us to continue the musical legacy of James Horner. 🙏 See you in 5 hours to follow the concert by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f94zLVD0fmE The video will remain online 24 hours after the end of the concert.

  23. You’re mixing up the click track with punches & streamers. The click track is an audio device following the music tempi that is fed through audio monitors (headset and earplugs) to the conductor and the players to keep precisely in tempo. Punches & streamers are visual cues that are shown only to the conductor. The streamer is that vertical line that goes across the screen that usually works as a sort of countdown to the downbeat where the sync must fall, while the punches are visual “holes” on screen marking the exact cue where the conductor has to hit the sync. Williams always preferred to conduct film cues to punches & streamers (and still does) because they allow to a more nuanced rubato performance, while the click track keeps everything much more mechanical, but certainly saves time.

  24. It is not just about being monothematic. Goldsmith's Hour of the Gun is a monothematic score and - hell - what a listening experience! But Presumed Innocent does not provide much variation or development in of the theme. Anyway, I think, Goldsmith is more the master when it comes to monothematic scores.

  25. You can even hear it on a couple of albums (I think Last Crusade was one of them?). But for some reason I was under the impression that it's not uncommon for him to record parts of his scores without one when possible.

  28. Yared has always been hit/miss to me, but here he churns out another good one again -- as he last did with A LIFE AHEAD two years ago. Elegant, reflective and a fun deconstruction of Beethoven's 9th to boot. Another one into my collection. Perfectly curated at 35 minutes.

    John Powell kicks ass

When Powell previously asked fans what Deluxe Edition they wanted next, I said "Paycheck" and that's what we got. And the most recent time he asked I said "The Bourne Identity" or "The Bourne Supremacy", so let's hope he was listening again. Edit: It's not one of my favourites, but come to think of it, X-Men would also be a solid choice. Provided it has the film versions of the titles and St. Lupus Day!

  37. It helps keep all the players of an orchestra together on a piece that they have not rehearsed together at all before the day of the recording. Basically it saves time by helping to make up for a lack of rehearsal.

  41. Weird blend of Williams' old 1970's horror melodrama with his post-A.I. more clinical minimalist style. I don't care what people say, this is great. The score might, or might not, be great but the development of this material is terrific. Karol
