    The Composer's Thread

An orchestral piece of music I wrote in the "spooky" style of Dukas, Lyadov, Berlioz et al. Enjoy!

  2. I tried to edit the cues 7M1 Dooku vs Obi-Wan and 7M2 Yoda Strikes Back, according to the sheet score. Of course, it's hardly possible to completely restore the score with the material that remained in the film (besides, it's not a fact that everything was recorded in the same way as written in the sheets), but it's possible to get a rough idea. I also "mockuped" a little missing fragment at 1:25-:35 and 1:38-:46. Perhaps the most interesting thing here is that, according to the original intention, JW in 7M1 cue used active percussion rhythms only for Anakin's fighting, while Obi-Wan fights to the quiet rubbing the gong and timpani hits. Also I included a 7M3 Finale here, along with my mockup of the one original piece, instead of insert with Imperial march (and also ultralittle fragment at 5:34-:37). Again, thanks to @Manakin Skywalker for extracted music from the movie.

  3. That would only be if J.J. had directed the movie. Then we'd get: 15M2 Dorinda Survives 15M2R Dorinda Survives 15M2R Insert 15M2R V2 (with JJ fix bars 4, 9, 23) 15M2R V3 (fix) w More Plane Insert and JJ fix 43 Insert for 15M2R Insert (with Tracked 1M4 Insert, new bars 1-2)

  4. Meh. This show is now so up its own arse with its mythology but it does it in neither a very clever or funny way (a la Thor: Ragnarok). And the writing is really just not up to snuff.

  9. I've never seen the movie either but the score is really nice. Much of the non-action material has a very similar sound to Hidalgo - I think JNH has a real talent for creating soundscapes using only strings/brass/woodwinds.

  10. Hi Myth, Welcome to the board! To answer your questions yes Screen Archives is quite reliable and reputable I've been purchasing from them for years (mostly the FSM and overseas stuff) As far as the song you are looking for. I assume you are talking about the song that appears in the film by Paul Haslinger. To my knowledge it has never been released ( I could be wrong here) and like the other Non-Williams source tracks and other songs is not included on either the OST nor the La-La Land expanded edition. The score is however complete.

  11. Not only that, he recalls that "We all saw it as a terrific thing that George had done." I remember reading somewhere else that Coppola was also very positive. George Lucas (and his various hagiographers) really wants to give the original film an aura of "the little engine that could". For sure, it was an ambitious, risky project - and I don't think at any point Lucas imagined it would be quite as succesful as it became - but both the studios, Lucas himsef and his friends were much more optimistic about it than Lucas lets on. Even the studios that had turned the film down had, without exception, noted that its "a very commercial" endeavor, they just doubted (not unjustly) "Mr Lucas' ability to pull it off." It also wasn't quite as Herculean as Lucas depicts it; at least, not initially: When Lucas started work, he was relying on the fact that Fox had a special effects department, which would have made that aspect of the movie much less challenging. It was dissolved at some point during development, forcing him to par-down the effects shots and to start ILM. The "used" design aesthetic also emerged during this time: they didn't have the resources to make things look polished, unlike on The Empire Strikes Back.

  21. I've really been enjoying American composer George Rochberg's works lately. I listened to his Violin Concerto abridged version and the original and very much prefer the more expansive violin symphony original version lasting 52 minutes long making it what I think could be the longest violin concerto. The work is dark and dramatic but also tonal. Anyone who likes late Shostakovitch, Bernard Herrmann (especially later Herrmann), or Benjamin Britten should find much to admire with this composer. So the reason I am not linking the extremely fine violin concerto is I prefer the restored original violin concerto which has a grander, more symphonic scale but on youtube requires multiple individual links. Additionally, the finer performance is of Isaac Stern's abridged version about 10 minutes shorter. A wonderful performance but not as great a version of the work. Hence I'm in a conundrum and ask you seek it out yourself.

  34. Returning to the prequels for a while... some small detail... I listened to "Are You a Jedi" from TPM a lot, and I didn't think that there might be any editing here, although this cue is a little slowed down in the film. When I was looking at the score, I noticed one bar, which is absent on the recording (users on this board have probably known about this for a long time), where the general elegiac mood for a short moment gives way to a more playful one. Honestly, it's difficult to understand whether this place was missed during the recording process, or cut out later. Anyway, I think it syncs with Anakin's objection to Shmi, ("Watto doesn't know I've built it..."). In the video, I had to cut out a pause in the dialogue, it seems that it matches better (marked it with b/w transition), although it is certainly not easy to find synchronization points here (for example, the cor anglais melody might have been intended for a longer shot with Shmi, who knows...) If this really was editing, then this is perhaps the most "wise" editing in the entire film, the cue feeling some different way...

  35. I think what you conveniently ignore is that everyone, including probably Hans Zimmer himself, cites a classic like Raiders, it's just a shorthand. It has no real meaning. A composer can't *really* write around an idiotic ADHS movie like this, because it lacks any real center. And to have just the empty gestures, the orchestral frenzies, i mean, we heard this kind of stuff so often before, and with JNH being what he is today, i'm not sure he even can muster the energy of 'Hidalgo' (which isn't that high of a benchmark). I don't think 'Jumanji' is that good of a score, but it's respectable Horner with a surprising amount of dissonance - but the one thing to take away from that was that he centered his score around the sweet, lyrical material (which in this movie relates to Robin Williams' past regrets) and anchors the silly stuff. Without that, and i presume 'Jungle Cruise' will lack it in spades, i'm afraid we will get another forgettable entry like the rather awful sequel score to 'Fantastic Beasts' (not JNH's fault, there was just nothing to do).
