  1. I just stumbled on this wonderful interview with Chris Malone about the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. He goes over a lot of what he talks about in his old pdf document and also corrects some mistakes he made. I'm only like 40 minutes into it but I've learned a ton about the exact formats that the OT scores were recorded onto, I'd highly recommend giving this a listen

  2. I gotta disagree with your characterization that "no one cares that the song isn't included". I think a lot of fans care that the song isn't included -- they're super grateful and relieved that it was left off! Yavar

  3. Another GoT spin-off is coming out in late 2025. https://tvline.com/news/game-of-thrones-knight-of-the-seven-kingdoms-season-1-release-date-hbo-max-1235172818/ The prequel was formally announced in April 2023. The series will be written and executive-produced by Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal, who currently serves as House of the Dragon‘s showrunner, and Vince Gerardis also will be EPs. “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros,” the previously released official logline reads. “A young, naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall” (aka Dunk) “and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

  4. Having heard some of his concert output, and the few tracks posted above, I am even more excited about this. I hope they give him the opportunity to harken back to a more space opera classical idiom for this project, something that the concept (hopefully) might ask for. Fingers crossed! Karol

  7. I dipped into this at Spotify and in the meantime I think, the composition of about at least half of or 70% of Elfman's scores he could leave to AI. He has a big repertoire of quite generic typical Elfman soundtracks and this is one of them. I am not saying it's bad. It is even quite good, if there weren't these 30-40 other scores of his, that almost sound the same. With Elfman and me it is an up and down. I am currently in a down.

  10. Oh wow, that's quite tasteful and also a great track. Bodes well for his ability to adopt other's musical styles This track is really nice, I've been checking out a bunch of random stuff from his repertoire and I've pretty much liked all of them. Very excited to see what he does with Star Wars Oh this is quite John Williams-y (or more accurately his influences!

  11. Went through most of the rerecordings I've bought physically that I haven't listened to in a while: King Kong, Adventures of Robin Hood, Sea Hawk, Thief of Bagdad, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, North by Northwest, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Taras Bulba, Fall of the Roman Empire, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, Born Free, Raise the Titanic, and of course Conan the Barbarian. Some were exhausting (Sea Hawk can be a bit much, and goddammit Dimitri, you know you are allowed to take musical breaks, right?), some lovely to get to know (don't really know Born Free that well so always nice to "rediscover" that there's more to it than the theme), some just plain old fun, and Ben-Hur is of course just perfect in every way. Reading the booklet and listening, the level of commitment to the restoration on Taras Bulba and especially Thief of Bagdad always astonishes me. But I'm just overall insanely happy with and grateful for all of these, and everyone who worked hard to free these wonderful scores from their not great or downright awful sounding or even nonexistent original forms.

  12. What If...? by Laura Karpman. This is probably some of the best scored Marvel content out there. Each episode has its own unique sound, thematic content and is very much reminiscent in style of the Shirley Walker's Batman: The Animated Series (and other DC animation). I sort of wish now they give Karpman the next Avengers film because she clearly knows how to balance out all the different ideas created by other composers and create a fairly coherent whole out of this multitude of, often disparate, ideas. All of this while maintaining the sense of fun, so much welcome in the MCU. Karol

  15. Thanks Jay, I actually just ordered this now thanks to your post. I was disappointed I missed out on both Dracula and Jaws when they came back in stock, so I pounced on the chance to grab this. Based on the samples, it sounds like it could be a very unique Williams score! I'm vibing his more low-key, minimalistic thriller-esque scores at the moment (A.I. and Minority Report have been on high rotation).

  18. I'd instantly buy instrumental albums for my top 3 artists but it doesn't seem like releasing them is something most artists actively want to happen. In fact my current number one 'wanted' item at the moment is a CD single from the 90s which is the sole source of a couple of instrumentals I really want. It's a very strange antagonism that artists and publishers have towards letting us hear underscore in its raw form. I was extremely happy when Spectre didn't include Sam Smith's song, and instead included an instrumental reworking of some sort. Can't stand his stuff.

  20. Yup. Elfman on autopilot isn’t for me. When he’s good, he’s brilliant. But I don’t recall that being the case here. Thanks for the feedback. I’m sure it’s a good score, but I’m not an Elfman completist, and I don’t need to spend money to add average music to my shelf. I remember absolutely loving the film though, more than the first one. So maybe I do owe it a listen at least.

  27. I actually just managed to give this a listen. It has been a busy couple of months and this kind of set takes some commitment. Plus, I wanted to watch the film first (which was quite charming actually). I also read the very extensive and detailed liner notes, which cover just about everything you might want to know about the adaptation, filming and scoring process. It's very exhaustive. And the set design is just gorgeous. The presentation itself is absolutely exquisite as well, both in terms of presentation and sound. It is also cool you can create an almost exclusively instrumental version of the score if you wish to do so. It's the kind of fuzzy and warm experience that feels like a warm blanket in those miserable winter months. Karol

  28. I quite enjoy the instrumental version of the Madonna song without the vocal stem. That would have been a cool additional song to add to the LLL release. It would be really cool to have a release of instrumentals of all bond theme songs. But a playlist cold suffice. There are quite a few of those instrumentals out there, though not sure if all (of the films that have opening sequences with songs).

  31. I wish it was there. It would have saved me some hassle creating a playlist and I consider the title song a vital part of the musical Bond experience. Even if it's not written by the score composer. That said, I have a hard time getting through this one. It's so overbearing and busy. I feel it somewhat lacks the clarity of ideas the other Arnold Bond scores have.

  37. John Powell – How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Deluxe Edition CD) UPC: 888072570092 Release Date: March 22, 2024 Regular price$ 25.00 Expected to ship the week of March 22, 2024. Varèse Sarabande completes its trilogy of Deluxe Editions of John Powell’s magnificent scores to the How to Train Your Dragon series with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). DreamWorks Animation’s third and final animated film is a heartfelt and bittersweet conclusion, written and directed by Dean DeBlois, as the “hidden world” of the title becomes a refuge for the dragons, which separate from humankind for their own protection. Composer Powell, working closely with the filmmakers, set the theme for the final film: “With love comes loss.” “He articulated that exact phrase when we were talking,” says DeBlois in Tim Greiving’s new liner notes, “and I put that in the script. I think it is a powerful idea, that if you’re going to engage in the euphoria of love, then you have to recognize that there will be pain, inevitably—pain and separation.” To complete the saga, Powell wrote a masterful, majestic score for large orchestra and choir, reprising themes from previous films and adding new ones in the best symphonic film music tradition. His ongoing Dragon collaborator, Icelandic singer Jónsi, wrote and performed the song, “Together From Afar.” Powell’s Dragon scores are admired and beloved for their themes, emotion and symphonic majesty. This 2-CD set Deluxe Edition of The Hidden World is released in conjunction with Omni Music Publishing’s full printed score, allowing fans and scholars a rare opportunity to appreciate both the recordings and the written compositions of a pivotal work. He has written an opera for which he won the Pulizter prize for music and many concert works (one for the great Hillary Hahn). I'm really looking forward to hearing what he does with this
