Was it used on an obscure teaser, or was it intended for trailer use but never actually used? There's this on YouTube, but they're unclear about whether it was actually released or not: "Prologue" is titled "Hook Trailer" on Williams' original manuscript, and it was written for the film's teaser trailer, which is the trailer that you included in your post. This trailer was in theaters in the summer of 1991. The later "main" trailer that debuted in the fall of 1991 used music from Williams' Witches of Eastwick score. This teaser trailer cue was written and recorded after Williams worked on all the songs and the movie was filmed, before he went and recorded JFK then came back to write and record the main score to Hook. Both of the main melodies heard in the trailer cue return as themes in the film score, just like the melodies of six of the nine songs he had written do. Andy 4,138
I avoided Hook when it first came to theaters. I guess it looked like Spielberg was selling out for big name actors and schmaltzy production, but for whatever reason I gave it a bah humbug. Then I got the Sony Boston Pops Williams on Williams album and holy shit, what’s this magic? Is The Banquet (The Never Feast) underrated? The concert version surely deserves more love than it gets with that wonderful brassy opening and big crashing finish. I was sold. (Hooked?) Naturally I picked up the OST and realized what a fool I was for ever letting my JW fandom diminish due to my gut reaction to the film itself. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the whole film. Then there was the Napster era of discovering the boots in horrible quality. That was fun. And here we are two expansions later. I may not have been as upset as some with the last expansion, but it looks like this is going to prove again how much this score has to offer. BB-8 3,479
Back in the 90s I felt that JW was getting increasingly "corny" as opposed to his style from the 70s and 80s. But this attitude was partly due to the genre of some of the films that didn't really appeal to me at that time (when I was a naïve young fart). Today I love all of JW's stylistic phases. The majority of the release comes from analog tape that Shawn Murphy saved his brilliant stereo mixes of every take to, in 1991. Nobody has to worry about any sound issues with this release -- as the samples should already tell you. Just compare the samples of "Flight To Neverland", "The Ultimate War (Film Version)", and "Swordfight and The End of Hook" to the same music on the 2012 edition. The songs (which were not recorded by Shawn Murphy) were saved on various different formats but sound just as good. Popular Post rough cut 1,714
I saw Hook in the cinema back in 1991. But at the tender age of 11, a lot of the themes (in the movie, not the soundtrack) went over my head (Tinkerbell turned regular human size? What on earth was that all about? 😂). I discovered John Williams “the composer” not many years later, in 1993 I think it was (in connection with Star Wars, of course). I was certainly aware of movie themes before that but that was the year when I discovered that all my favorite themes from my favorite movies originated from the same man. And I discovered that soundtracks were a thing. From then on, I’ve been on a life long journey to discover as much as possible of the maestro’s wonderful compositions. Back in those pre-internet days, it was a slow process, compared to anything today. The only way to find out if JW had scored a movie was to A) to watch the movie (also a task into itself since my family didn’t have cable and weren’t big on renting movies), or B) to flip through the scant “soundtrack” selection at the local record store and discover which composer was attached to which movie. There were maybe 10-20 soundtracks all in all to choose from (and not just JW - I mean the total selection consisted of 10-20 soundtracks)! I can’t say for sure at what age I discovered that Hook was John Williams, but it was quite “early” in my fandom. 15 years old? 16? But it was in there with the first slew of John Williams soundtracks I spent my allowance on. Star Wars, Superman, E.T., Jaws, Jurassic Park, Hook… Listening to Hook I fell in love instantly. I am looking forward to listening to the score again and rediscover all those musical moments I once fell in love with. Not to mention all those gems to be discovered in the bonus track section. The set really looks fantastic - for what it already is and was - but also in its new presentation and in all its completeness. Great job done to all involved, especially since it seems to have been a long time coming. Can’t wait to hear the story behind it! Popular Post Chewy 2,391
Some words from Maurizio on FSM: Quote It's still early to reveal all the backstory and all the insight about the music and how this release has come together, but everything (and I mean *everything*) will be revealed at some point. The liner notes will have already a general account of all this, but for a proper deep dive about everything HOOK check on The Legacy of John Williams soon Quote There is a large amount of incorrect information and even urban legend (mostly based on fans' speculation, but also a few odd remarks from the artists themselves) that has circulated for decades about the Peter Pan project Spielberg announced in 1985, but also a lot of wrong assumptions about how Hook and its score came together. As I said, pretty much the whole story will be told soon, but the desire of the producers of this new release right now is letting people discover the whole thing and enjoy the embarrassment of riches it offers. There will come the time for going into the nitty-gritty of everything And information from Mike about the sources used for this release: Quote Every bit of it transferred from analog scoring masters with the exception of two song demos from DAT tape. https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?forumID=1&pageID=3&threadID=152698&archive=0 BrotherSound, bollemanneke, Manakin Skywalker and 6 others 7
