  1. I haven't actually listened to Dunkirk since it came out. Probably should revisit it soon. I kid, I kid...

  4. Silence worked just fine; the moment isn't really about Holdo or her death as much as it's about the utter spectacle of the moment. Any music would've been distracting.

  6. It's sooo beautiful. Love the way Luke's Exile theme seamlessly transitions from Rey's Theme towards the end, as he observes from atop the cliff. Such a fantastic new theme. Sadly the film cue is riddled with obvious microedits; the original cue was probably recorded for a longer version of the sequence. Alas, we'll need to wait many years, nay decades, to actually hear it.

  7. OK, sounds like we're gonna target a group Leavesden tour on Thursday the 25th and possibly a private Abbey Road tour on Saturday the 27th, so keep those dates open if those interest you. More details as things gel together.

  8. I fail to see how it's beside the point. You're saying Thing A isn't like Thing B, but since Thing A is in no way obliged to be like Thing B, it's a pointless comparison; so in THAT sense, it's beside the point, I suppose.

  9. This doesn't track for me. The Force in Star Wars is nothing like the One Ring in Rings. Or at least, it hasn't been presented that way thus far.

  10. Now, that is quite true. I hadn't considered that, if I'm being honest.

  18. I fell in love once again with Béla Bartòk's music in the last few days. I'm going through some of his orchestral warhorses. Checking out these two masterpieces in particular: If you love Goldsmith and Williams you definitely must check them out too.

  22. Re: R. T. Shore, Williams said the Canto Bight source music was “a sort of Artie Shaw imitation put through all the wrong wringers.” So maybe it's a play on that, as if R. T. Shore were a fictional bandleader in the Star Wars universe. Similar to the name "Augie's Great Municipal Band" given to the Naboo celebration music.

  23. At 86, I'm sure Williams is feeling fatigue regardless of the project but he obviously still enjoys working and is dedicated to his work. He wrote over 2.5 hours of above average music for a mostly lousy movie, that shows true dedication and spirit right there.

  24. Those titles are hilarious. Good to see John still has his devilish sense of humour. Be funny if Important Scene is The Spark? Interesting! So Part 1 is presumably the traditional Luke's Theme (1:03 - 1:51) Part 2 is Rose's Theme, Part 3 Rev is Leia's Theme (indicating there was an alternate Carrie tribute recorded), and Part 4 is the credit denouement (7.27 onwards) with variations on Rey's Theme. The rest is editorially created (Rebellion is Reborn, Battle of Crait, Yoda Insert/Yoda's Theme, Holdo's Resolve, Here They Come, Again!) On Holdo's Resolve, I'm guessing either No Title 5M46INS or No Title 7M67AINS are the film version alternate ending. Another mystery solved. Most likely a deleted cue that accompanied the deleted scene where Rey crashes a party Luke's holding with the island Caretakers, complete with new source music (which I predicted John might have written for the Caretakers' party!) Anyone have any thoughts on what R.T. Shore represents?

  26. I'm not sure why the album version of the opening cue is a little different than the film's, but either version provides immense chills so I never minded. It's just a curiosity anyhow.

  27. I'm a big fan of Powell's "cartoon music". Sure it can be frenetic (cartoon music in general is), but it's entertaining and frenetic. Plus Powell knows how to compose good themes, and his use of the orchestra is great. He's one of my favorite composers currently working for a reason. Love his HTTYD, Kung-Fu Panda, and Ice Age scores. Chicken Run is also a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to Han Solo, should be good.

  29. Krull - James Horner Horner's masterwork, no matter how much you guys prefer The Rocketeer, Wrath of Khan or his glossy Oscar fare. No matter how much I listen to it, it continues to draw me in. The main theme, the overly rapturous love theme, and the highlight cue "Ride of the Firemares." It is truly fine narrative scoring.

  32. I get that cartoon music on its own is an acquired taste, but shucks, it's fun if you find ones that particularly resonate with your soulful self. Having to 'wade through' the wacky stuff is to me the same kind of obstacle as having to wade through the blander underscores when waiting for action music or theme declarations in live-action film scoring where you might as well be listening to a fan blowing.

  33. There probably should not have been a Disney trilogy to begin with, let alone two. The Jedi Steps and Finale alone is enough reason to be thankful Williams took on the project.

  39. I am feeling strangely envious of those of you who will be experiencing a concert at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time. By modern standards the building is too big for a concert hall, acousticians will tell you there are too many seats, some parts of the circle have restricted views, the sound of some sections of the orchestra can get lost depending on where you are sitting, the ladies usually have to queue for the toilets in the interval, etc. etc. Yet despite all that, the place just has a sense of magic and a character that far outweigh its few shortcomings as a concert hall. It is such a magnificent building, built by the Victorians who did things like this properly. Although I have been there dozens of times, I never fail to feel a growing sense of excitement when I first glimpse the building as I walk through Kensington Gardens to a concert. When you walk inside the building it is as if the music of all the great musicians who have performed there over the years has permeated its very walls, like the prayers of generations of the devout in our great cathedrals. The hall's circular shape also makes it a surprisingly intimate venue - you can turn your head away from the stage and clearly see the faces of most of your fellow concertgoers as if you were all sitting round a table to celebrate some special family occasion. There are other concert halls where the sound, the view and the facilities might be superior, but I can think of no better place than the Royal Albert Hall in which to see John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra perform.

  40. Ingrid Goes West I kinda loved it. Aubrey Plaza is perfect as a girl who becomes obsessed with a hipster woman in L.A. on Instagram and actually moves there and becomes her friend. It's not clear at first if the audience is supposed to think she's a kook or if we should be on her side. It's difficult to sympathize with any other character besides Ingrid and her landlord, who is obsessed with Batman. Everyone else seems crazy in the end. It also had an ending I never saw coming. I highly recommend it. Aubrey Plaza and her boyfriend are very endearing.
