  1. As both a combination of film and image and a standalone cue, it's a knock out (if Luke could kill, he probably will...). I can't be the only one who sees it as a natural development of the Jedi Steps theme (which is in itself a sly evocation of Vader's theme). It's as if Williams is observing that in his final act of mastery, Luke has now fully integrated his own shadow with his self into a well-functioning whole, though a process of individuation. This process has been mediated by his soul-image or anima, in the form of Yoda (and to some extent Rey), the spiritual middle-man between his conscious and unconscious. His tainted family history (Vader) and youthful rebellion has been reconciled with his noble Jedi ideals. The dark now at one with the light. That's my bit of cod Jung for the day.

  2. Killer main theme.

  3. It is very much intentional. I don't see how anyone can't hear the deliberate parallel between the piece and Vader's theme.

  4. As far as bringing back an older theme in this score...man, did Williams take the ball, chew it out, then pimp slap it out of the park. The reprise of Luke and Leia is so tender, yet also carries this certain tension that smacks me right in the heart. The ostinato thing feels very strange for John Williams to do in a Star Wars movie, but I think it works.

  5. I love it, especially the little hint of Darth Vader's theme that never quiiiiiite develops.

  6. Looks like Twilight Time is going to be releasing Cinderella Liberty on bluray this coming July. Always good to have a new John Williams isolated score. Perhaps a signal of an updated soundtrack release?

  7. Right. You've ably explained the distinction between the Episodes and the stand alones. The question is...so? Why does Star Wars have to be a "unified story"? Why can't it also be something else?

  14. It's definitely the highlight of the score and film, IMO. It features the final farewell to the original heroes of the OT (Luke, Leia and Han) with the use of themes and Luke handing the dice to Leia.

  15. To me, the ostinato part is the highlight of the cue. I wouldn't be surprised if that part of the movie was temp tracked with Bruckner.

  17. Again, I think it might be more a matter of people just not finding the backstory of a beloved and iconic character who never needed one to be very interesting. Like how people were complaining about Prometheus because they didn't want the mystique of the xenomorph and that whole world explained.

    "Theme Song"

I used to get really uppity about this sort of thing, like a lot of people here, but then I realized I came off as a condescending jackass, so I've mellowed out with it. I'm cool with it, in other words.

  19. Someone on FilmScore Monthly said FAKE NEWS. Also, interesting that the tweet has since been deleted. Maybe there IS a plot I took very good notes at the ASMAC event. Kraemer mentioned that the motorcycle chase had to be totally rewritten the day before the recording session to be faster and more action-packed.

  20. For my money, they should have titled the movie “Han Solo and the [x]”, with no “Star Wars” mentioned everywhere.

  21. Meh, that's a straw man. There is sliding scale here, it's not all so black and white. Is an "earthbound" "contemporary" domestic drama Star Wars? NO. That would seem to violate both the "Long time ago" and "galaxy far, far, away" thing. That's absurd. But does a movie about a guy named Han Solo, and a guy named Lando, and a Wookie named Chewy, and a ship called the Millennium Falcom flying around in space shooting blasters being chased by the Empire all set to John Williams (or Williams inspired) music qualify as being "Star Wars"? I'd say yes.

  24. I have a soft spot for Soule's work on those games too; it's a shame they never got a very good release. Here's what an EA sound director said about whatever influence Williams had or didn't have on the sound of the games: "The other thing is that [Soule's] music's very close to the style of John Williams, and that feel works really well for Harry Potter. We did approach John Williams to see if we could license the score for Harry Potter. Everybody thinks 'The game's licensed from Warner Bros, so therefore you get instant access to the John Williams music,' but that isn't the case, because John Williams owns his own stuff. It would actually have cost us a fortune to use that music, and what we would have had was 90 minutes of very specific music written for the film, which we would then have had to jump through hoops producing edits for the game. So ultimately, yes, you'd get the sound of John Williams, but you wouldn't get music that was appropriate for what you were doing. So Jeremy was the best option, because he sounds like John Williams, and he can write music specifically for the bits of gameplay that we need it for." The "John Williams owns his own stuff" comment seems oversimplified or dubious to me. Also, on the PC version there's a file called "Invisible" in the music directory which sounds pretty darn close to Hedwig's Theme! As I recall it's not used in the actual game though.

  26. The Austrian broadcasting news website announced that they would have the "Batman composer" this year. Since they had Elfman last year already, I hope they announce "the Batman composer" again next year, so I can finally get to see Goldenthal in person. They also wrote that several of his works will be presented in completely new arrangements, which means that stuff like PotC might actually sound good with an orchestra (they managed to do that before), but also that it has even less to do with Zimmer's original compositions than the usual recompositions they regretfully keep doing for this series. Traditionally, the second half of the concert will be dedicated to his works, potentially with one piece conducted by himself, and certainly with him receiving the Max Steiner award at the end of the concert. He might also give a talk at the symposium. I imagine tickets will sell out even more quickly than usual (i.e. *very* quickly) this time. I also wonder why it's been several weeks since the (already rather late) announcement of the concert date and the official announcement of the awardee. Was Zimmer reluctant to come? Were they still trying to get Williams?

  27. I'm tired of motion capture. Andy Circus in the Disney SW was terrible. Just put some makeup on him. The only SS popcorn movies in the last decade have been friggin' motion capture. Cameron is stuck on it too.

  32. Suspiria Why are movies like this praised so much, yet they're so fucking boring and awful? I know good horror movies exist, but this isn't one of them, not even for kitsch value. Has one or two creative kills though. The main girl looks like Frances O'Connor.

  38. Did anyone take pictures of John Williams sitting with the audience in the first half of the concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra last night? My girlfriend and I were lucky to be sitting right next to him! It was unreal! For one hour, we sat next to the maestro, listening to his music together, we looked at him nodding his head to the music and tapping with his left foot. I still can't believe what happened. I shook his hand! Sadly, Mr. Williams arrived when the first piece was starting and left as soon as the applause roared at the end of the tuba concerto. There was no chance for us to take a little selfie. Also, we were fully aware that John Williams was there to listen to his work, not to engage in social chat with his fans. And take a selfie while his music is playing? Not a chance! So, if anyone on this forum was sitting further away and took pictures of him in the audience, we would love to see them as a souvenir of this unbelievable moment!
