The drums what is this a rock band? Stop this madness. I listened to John Powell and now never again. Don't listen to that man but John Towner Williams is my best friend, so keep that orchestra real man. Too loud for me all this rumble rumble stuff. My worn out shoe has more soul than this what the hell. And the drums again are awful I know my perucssion cuz my brother's physician's niece's godfather's second cousin Ted, he has a dog, and the guy who walks it is a part-time freelance timpanist and he told me all about cheap drums and omg these are those. Very cheap and I saw a little kid with this drums through the window of the dollar store and it's cheap imported plastic drums for sure. I cannot believe this hype I gotta go back to listen to Rogue One now bye-bye.6 points -

100% confirmed. John Williams leaves his Christmas decorations up all year. Also, congrats, @Will! I remember when you were just a youngling around here, back in the TFA days. Sorry your senior year had to end on Zoom, but at least you now have the choice of "The Rise of Skywalker" and "Reunion" to go along with "The Throne Room" and "Augie's Great Municipal Band" on your virtual graduation playlist!2 points -

I'm not ending it with that cheesy- Assistant: Also, don't forget to remind them who you are. JW: -_- WTF, they know who I- Assistant: 3, 2, I... JW: Hello, this is... A year from now, the accepted wisdom at JWFan will be that Williams really wrote 90% of the score himself and Powell just came in after to overdub disco drums.2 points -

THE ADVENTURES OF HAN - 2018 John Williams theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story
Taikomochi and one other reacted to mrbellamy for a topic
Ferdinand definitely belongs in the discussion. I wouldn't credit Williams much with Powell's recent developments as a composer...I don't think there's any evidence for that. I feel like if anything the bigger influence would be the Star Wars score study he mentioned doing for Solo. He said it was "devastating him hard" reading that music so closely I think the fact that Powell started doing fewer movies may be one reason his music has gotten seemingly richer in recent years. It seems that he's also become more philosophical about the kinds of movies he chooses to do, giving his music a stronger point of view. For a long time he always struck me as a supreme work-for-hire talent but he's become more interesting lately, it feels like there's more authorship going on. Also the more heartbreaking side of it which can be tasteless to speculate too much, but he did lose his wife to cancer in 2016. It's been noted here before that Williams lost Barbara Ruick in 1974, just before he began a remarkable creative period. Coincidence, maybe.2 points -

This is awesome!! I'm graduating high school this year and it's been quite a disappointing spring, to say the least, as all of our senior events have been canceled. Obviously this message is intended specifically for the Thornton school graduates, but I feel that it speaks to all of us graduates, wherever we may be. The little piano excerpt of Pomp & Circumstance is lovely. P.S. anyone have any idea what this thing (presumably a stuffed animal of some sort) is? Monkey stuffed animal?1 point -

KM is this guy who only ever gets off when stuff sounds like big orchestral Williams of a certain time period. He's deaf beyond that. Some of Goldsmith's manipulations of the 'evil' hymn tune is actually quite bold, harmonically and so on.1 point -

Pretty sure JW played the tiny bit of Rey's theme on piano during the climax of TROS.1 point

Somehow I doubt the removed music sounded anything like the Mustafar battle. For me, the tone of that music doesn't gel with the more brutal, emotive sequel fight. There's a pulpy sense of fun with the Mustafar battle (even though the circumstances are dire) which pairs brilliantly with JW's operatic music. Maybe it's the cartoony/over the top VFX, intercut with Palpatine's antics? TROS is comparatively grim, visually and emotionally. No one's having any fun there. Even without knowing how JW scored it, I can understand why he asked for it to be removed (especially if similar to the music which followed -- a bunch of timpani rolls, brassy Kylo Ren fanfares and tense strings). Mind you, that's an observation of the trilogy as a whole, not isolated to this one scene. The new films are a real downer compared to the first six. JW's sequel writing seems reflective of that, paired with the evolution of his sensibilities in the decade since ROTS.1 point

The coda in the 1941 end credits always makes me happy. 0:00-1:20 of 'Journey to the Island'. With a cue that has both of the major themes from the score, the opening of this track is just so fucking beautiful, that sometimes I forget to appreciate it. 1:50-2:08 of 'Revisiting Normandy'. The movie and score have just begun and I already want to cry.1 point

JW and the VPO had a mutual courtship over the last few years. Both his management and the orchestra management worked really hard to make it happen (and thanks heaven it did just right before the epidemic crisis started). It's not unusual to take years for things like this to actually happen.1 point

Meet Han is one of my favorite tracks on the OST. Although you can hear many Powell-isms in it, the low brass and introduction of Han's theme seem very JW. Interesting to think that JW might have written an intro to a SW movie that didn't begin with the classic fanfare.1 point

Again, to quote John Williams himself on this matter: As for the demos Williams wrote I bet they are just various variations on his theme. There are a lot of small bits here and there that sound like him. Like this, for example: Or this: Or this (not sure about 4:04-4:12 bit though): Perhaps...this? And definitely this: Karol1 point
