  1. Pablo Sáinz Villegas, the spanish guitarrist who premiered 10 years ago Rounds, has just revealed in an interview for the spanish newspaper El Pais that he received a letter from John Williams inviting him for a collaboration with Yo Yo Man and him for a new album they are recording with the New York Philharmonic. https://elpais.com/cultura/2021-09-24/pablo-sainz-villegas-me-escribo-con-john-williams-por-correo-postal.html

  3. Oasis Knebworth 1996. Saw this tonight and it was amazing. Loads of music from both nights obviously but this was all about the fans and their experience. They got a nice sized bunch to reminisce and it’s just crazy how much the world has changed in 25 years. I was too young to even know who oasis were but the doc brought back memories of when I saw them in Slane in 09 and the experiences around that. It’s great being able to buy tickets from my phone while in bed but I kinda miss the comraderie of queuing up outside a shop to get tickets. August 1993 oasis didn’t have a record deal and had played a handful of pubs. August 1994 they release their debut album. August 95 and their making the evening news because they’re in a chart battle with another band. August 1996 they played the largest free standing gigs in British history. 2.7% of the population applied for tickets. It’s just insane how quick it all blew up.

  4. I haven't had time to go back into analytical mode, but I just want to say: This album is really really great! The sound quality is fantastic, and the new main program is just a great listen. I honestly never really listened to the old OST album that many times, so basically going in fresh I just find the main program to be an extremely solid 57 minute experience. That 54th regiment theme gets me every time. I also ended up liking the source music more than I was expecting, which is more than I like the source music sections on most releases. I always enjoy HAVING all the source music, and listening to it maybe 1 out of every 20 times I just enjoy the main program and that's it. But in this case, I might trying a combined playlist with them all integrated in. There's already plenty of drum & fife stuff in the main program, so more from the source section will probably fit in nicely. Great release, one of the year's best. And one of Horner's best scores!

  7. After the awful 'MI Part XIVVI' (or whatever it was, by Lorne Balfe), i harbored little hope for the next almost-dead franchise 'saved' by RCP. But apart from it being not being particularly great or distinctive, at least Zimmer and team produced a solid album with some stylish moments (which seem to be reserved for the expensive establishing shots, the rest is more or less standard mood scoring with the JB theme entering now and then). At least the unbearable noisy action cues are kept in check (some feature even fun counter trumpets, i. e. Cuba Chase). The outstanding stuff is exclusively Barry, of course, and its only the usual tip of the hat for the fanboys, but man, you listen up when these OHMSS references come in and ask yourself why current film music is what it is. Is stuff like that not good enough for movies nowadays?

  8. John Williams - The Last Jedi (Complete) Hey, this is a pretty good score. It lacks a really great new theme to anchor the score around, so feels more like a "part 2" of Force Awakens score more so than a typical new Star Wars score to me, but that's OK. The new renditions of Rey's Theme and the March of the Resistance are really great, it's always nice and while Rose's Theme, the Luke in Exile theme, and Holdo's Resolve material don't set my world on fire, they are nice additions to the catalog. And now that I've finally heard The Long Goodbye, it was nice to hear a new rendition of that theme. I'm sure I'll always find Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker superior to this score, but this score is still good!

  9. ok, here we go. Regarding the wall there are 3 major and very different spots in Berlin. 1. East Side Gallery (open-air gallery on the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Side_Gallery https://goo.gl/maps/jfJ2HLZDquMnhgA78 2. Bernauer Strasse memorial site (open air museum where you can get a pretty good and spatial idea of the whole thing) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gedenkstätte_Berliner_Mauer https://goo.gl/maps/kLJ8AzTfNtDxRXKBA 3. Topography of Terror https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topography_of_Terror https://goo.gl/maps/QUtSrR3bmoTZpnPN6 I strongly recommend No. #2 famous curry wurst takeaway https://goo.gl/maps/G387XxFzpA9Hwfih8 I really CAN'T recommend Checkpoint Charlie. There's nothing to see there, despite students dressed up as US soldiers for taking photos. If you're looking for some Soviet vibes you have to go to Treptower Park https://goo.gl/maps/7SvQAgS7revgPZwy7 or stroll along Karl-Marx-Allee (yes) starting at Alexanderplatz. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl-Marx-Allee The official place for movie premieres in the former GDR is one of the most beautiful cinemas in Germany. The bar still looks very authentic. They're showing movies in English there as well. https://yorck.de/kinos/kino-international https://goo.gl/maps/T23WV2qYg9jZVWjM6 my favourite neighbourhood (for drinks and food) is in Prenzlauer Berg around Kollwitzplatz https://goo.gl/maps/sh1Jm9hmVSZjGAeFA Bergmannstraße in Kreuzberg is also nice and famous https://goo.gl/maps/DZcPUtryd21cmiS37 There are two really nice beer gardens, one in the government district https://goo.gl/maps/KdZsr2qM91SzBvSx9 the other in Tiergarten https://goo.gl/maps/oFV11UMvMukh76a79 The city models are really interesting (no entrance fee btw) https://www.stadtentwicklung.berlin.de/planen/stadtmodelle/en/ausstellung.shtml https://goo.gl/maps/4fv5TL6tPowPEJhu7 btw we have federal elections tomorrow https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/15/german-elections-explained-chancellor-bundestag-voting-parties-and-merkel.html oh and OF COURSE the Museum of Musical Instruments, just next to the Philharmonie. 12. @Carlborg: The best Option for the Philharmonic is the Motel one at Potsdamer Platz. You have to walk around 1km to the philharmonic and you have a big U+S Station there. Thats around 100m to walk from the Hotel. Bus Station is also a short walk. From all that you can reach all famous things in Berlin. If you ask me i would prefer this Option over Alexanderplatz or Mitte.

  14. That's where I'm staying. There isn't really ONE central location in Berlin. It has many different central locations, so you need to get around with public transportation anyway (whether to the concert hall or other places). I've stayed many places in Berlin over the years, but never really close to Kreuzberg. So that's what I'm doing now, at Motel One Mitte. I'm extremely busy these days, but I need to set aside time at some point to plan my stay. After all, it spiralled from being a quick stopover for the concert to a 5-day holiday. And since I've already seen and experienced most of what the city has to offer, I need to think creatively about how to fill the days. I will post in the "get-together" thread when I have my itinerary sorted out.

  23. Very happy re the RTD re-hiring news ... be great if Doctor Who regains its 'snap', swagger and sense of fun as a result. Writers from his initial era returning (and Murray Gold) wouldn't hurt, either. Wondering if this increases Michael Sheen's chances of being the 14th Doctor in a *Welshies together* stylee. He topped a recent Radio Times 'next Doctor' poll. Does the RTD announcement being made before the last of Chibnall's eps have even aired tell us what the Beeb REALLY think of his tenure? Hard not to see it that way, I must say.

    The NINTENDO Thread

It's tough to get into, especially if you're someone with not a lot of time to spend lots of time learning systems. Yeah, you can tell they know what people want and want to use the old boards to really get data on specifically what design things people like. Me too, but I downloaded it anyway just in case it's fun. I feel more like you do about Voice of Cards about this than I do about Voice of Cards. Kinda underwhelming, especially considering the DLC for Hyrule Warriors 1. You could do anything wacky and cool and its just generic story nonsense. The story in the game stunk, especially for one with SUCH a cool premise. So having it be all story crap and two uninteresting characters is a bummer. They've done this before. I forgot with who. Maybe Terry? I kind of prefer it this way. Smash can warrant it's own in depth direct. It's much better than him taking 20 of the 40 minutes explaining what the guy's B side move is. People have been waiting for something like this for 25 years! Yeah, the game launched unfinished. I told my wife yesterday that I wonder if they just dumped the game out with almost no content assuming nobody would care. It's been a good while since people cared about Animal Crossing because of a bunch of boring to bad games like Happy Home Designer and that board game trash. The amiibos did horribly too. You'd find them in clearance at Five Below, which is like double clearance. Then the game turned out to be a gigantic hit because of WHEN it launched and the demographics of Switch...though I wonder who still cares at this point. My wife also made a great point, that she kinda doesn't want to go back to the game because it reminds her so much of March 2020. Yeah, I get they get to make a game come out sooner if they give you the bear minimum, but I don't know anyone i've talked to, myself included, who has gone back to these games when they get updates. I think it's a Japanesey thing where it's an ongoing service, kind of like Japanese restaurants where you go back all the time and they tell you what you're having that day instead of choosing yourself. That's what I was told when people were confused about how Splatoon did its stuff...where you can't choose which board you play on and when, etc. I feel like you had a specific time to get people into Mario Gold and Tennis and if you didn't, two generic grunt characters aren't going to bring people back. This was on 3DS and Nintendo published it. Now it's not them publishing. Kinda like Fatal Frame 4. Now's your chance! The best story ever told in a game! Not my cup of tea, but they'd be fools not to try to tap into the install base on Switch. I just suck at these strategy games. That's my wife's wheelhouse so she's excited. Music sounds STELLAR though. Me too. N64 games are a bitch and a half to emulate. I'm sure it took lots of work to get them running on Switch. It's aight. Yeah, the only reason I'm waiting is because the games get steep sale prices pretty fast. Look at the old Castlevania collection. Games are ace, though. See, I'm of the opinion that this one looks visually really bad. Why try to "HD" something that looked so perfect on SNES. Unless you can clean up the textures a little but still keep the pixelation and stuff like those 2DHD things. The graphical style is YEESH on what was such a freaking gorgeous game. Even in the trailer here you can see the slowdown, so they obviously didn't put the time and energy into it that it deserved. It was...at least on PC. It's a "demo". So was the first. Supposedly 3-5 will come together and be paid, but we'll see. The first one didn't do it for me at all, and I thought Undertale was okay. I was going to play through it over last weekend but meh. Who? What? Anime JRPG. Pass. Where? Gotta leave something behind to make bringing it up again worth it. Don't they release this one a ton too in collections? When? I think everyone is assuming its just going to look like CG Mario, but the voice cast suggests its going to look different than, say, the cutscenes in Mario + Rabbids. I don't think it can ever get as big as it is in Japan. It's too Japanesey, but it was WILDLY popular in the US, at least when it was first on the scene. It got into the general kid population mindset. It was an actual cool thing for awhile. The Wii U version is perfectly cool if you have it. The second game felt like it might have been better, but that's probably just because they upped the intensity to 11. You're right, I wish they opened with this. I also wish this and Kirby weren't leaked by Nintendo on their site. After seeing they listed it for 2022 out of nowhere on their site, I knew to expect it in the direct. I love Bayonetta. Do they ever do that? People always seem to expect it but I can't remember the last time they did.

  31. He represents too many of Chibnall's shortcomings for me. He's too goofy, too random, too camp to be taken seriously (as in: a serious threat) to me. I'm not sure I'd agree with not ever going too far. But he never went too too far. I'd rather have a bit too far than Chibnall's current not nearly far enough. I've only seen him in two films and only remember him in one of those but hey, I can imagine Colin (God of Sex) as The Doctor.

  42. I'm still holding out hope that the digital release was a mistake and it will be quietly replaced after the 1st. I'll keep the flame lit a little longer. I've waited a long time for Hunchback. Considering how many times Menken has worked on this material, he has to care about it as well. I would like to think he cares about this release. I don't expect every tiny little thing to be perfect. Just add back in the finale and fix the stutters in Out There and The Cathedral and I can handle everything else.

  43. No problem! 1 - The actual Omni book only has two complete versions of "After Antietam", I see what they show on their site, but this is the breakdown in the book and what it all means: 1M2R Intro (Original) - The "R" leads me to this this is what they meant on their site as "After Antietam (Revised)". This is simply an alternate introduction to the cue "After Antietam" and only lasts for 6 bars. It features the "Reflection Motif" as Omni names it, a rising and falling figure in the strings. This theme itself can be identified at 1:17 in track 2 on the LLL presentation, just for reference. This cue is unused and not in any recording we have. That leads us to the next cue.... 1M2 After Antietam (With Film Intro) - This is the one that lines up with the recording on track 2 of the LLL film presentation. It features a new 6 bar introduction that replaced 1M2R. Those 6 bars feature no melody, but the two chords in it are based on the first two notes of the "Reflection Motif". This 6 bar intro is NOT on the LLL disc, I don't know if it's in the film or not. The LLL presentation (and the OST) start on bar 7 of this cue, when the choir enters. Other than missing the 6 bar intro, the LLL matches this cue exactly. 1M2ALT After Antietam - This is a shortened version of 1M2, which is 52 bars. 1M2ALT is only 13 bars and would have faded out earlier. Its instrumentation is different - pulled back and scored for a smaller ensemble, 2 clarinets, trumpet solo, timpani, percussion, boys and men's choir. The trumpet/bugle calls in this version different from the ones we hear in 1M2. It is also worth noting that the OST version of "After Antietam" does not appear in the Omni book, so there is indeed another version yet. The OST features different trumpet calls that don't appear in any version in the book and different rhythms in the melody. 2 - The Omni book has "1M4R Flashback (Film Version)" and "1M4 Flashback Version 2". "1M4R Flashback (Film Version)" - This is written as the first 12 bars of "Drei Klavierstücke" (disc 1, track 21). The cue we hear on track 3 of the album overlays for 3 bars starting in bar 10 before continuing along on its own, the source music fading out. The source music returns during the final bar of the chorus, so it overlays with the last bar of the track. "1M4 Flashback Version 2" - This matches Disc 2, Track 14 "Flashback Alternate 1". The other alternate is not featured in the book. 3 - You are correct on how that lines up, yes. The only difference is the Film Mix in LLL 1-24 does not include the orchestra entrance, and gradually fades out the field drums. 4 - Okay, so "54th Regiment" is partially source music and partially "Worth a Life". "Hoist the Flag", LLL 1-25, is present throughout the cue, albeit with repeated phrases that are not represented in the written music for "54th Regiment". "Worth a Life" overlays with the "Hoist the Flag" tune, and so it actually shares slate numbers. The contents on the Omni website are listed differently than they are in the book, "Worth a Life" is actually the "Parade Overlays" listed on the site. This is complicated and a bit of a mess...so I'm going to just explain what we have on the CD first then follow up with what's in the book: LLL 1-10 "Worth a Life" - This appears in the Omni book as "6M2 Worth a Life Version 2". LLL 2-15 "Worth a Life (Alternate 1)" - This appears in the Omni book as "6M2 Worth a Life Version 1 (Parade Overlay)" LLL 2-17 "Worth a Life (Alternate 2)" - This appears in the Omni book as "6M2 Worth a Life Version 2". It seems to be musically the same as LLL 1-10, so any differences must be only slight instrumentation changes or the pacing of the take. For example, at the climax in bar 12 the alternate takes a brisker tempo and the fadeout at the end takes longer. But musically everything seems the same. Now here's some fun stuff from the Omni book to make things more complicated: "6M2/6M3 Hoist the Flag" - This matches LLL 1-25 "Hoist the Flag". "6M2/6M3RA 54th Regiment (Film Version)" - "Hoist the Flag" beings the cue, with orchestra beginning at bar 53. The structure of "Hoist the Flag" differs from any recording we have. When the orchestra begins it starts similarly to "6M2 Worth a Life Version 2", however the melody at the beginning is elongated. Structurally it features the same themes in the same sequence, again just elongated. We do not have a recording of this as far as I can tell. "6M2/6M3R 54th Regiment" - Again starts with a version of "Hoist the Flag", followed by an orchestra entrance at bar 57. Again, basically structured the same but with different variations of the themes presented in all versions of "Worth a Life". Again, we do not have a recording of this as far as I can tell. "6M2 Worth a Life Version 1 (Parade Overlay)" - As said above, matches LLL 2-15 "Worth a Life (Alternate 1)". "6M2 Worth a Life Version 2" - As said above, this seems to match BOTH LLL 1-10 "Worth a Life" AND LLL 2-17 "Worth a Life (Alternate 2)". So...there is a lot going on with that cue. Hope that all helps @Jay, and doesn't complicate things further! 🤣
