  1. I hear this all the time, but it’s not really true that people in general are getting more sensitive. They are getting better at voicing their feelings and their needs. Western societies in general are also just doing a better job of understanding various viewpoints and respecting some of them. That said, I have no sympathy for the people who get upset when fascism is called out. Fuck ‘em. Indy had the right approach for dealing with Nazis.

  2. I've been listening to the OST quite regularly since its release. I love the score. I can't bloody wait for the isolated score. Christmas will come a few weeks early this December

    Intrada Digital Release

Then probably Budd and Goldenthal stole from the same classical composer

  6. Probably the rarest Elliot Goldenthal release in existence. An LP of 33 minutes from 1981 containing a set of loungey/cheesy library music cues. Sounds nothing like the Goldenthal we know and love, but an awesome curiousity.

  7. Film is a HUGE nostalgic favourite of mine (saw it in the theatre as an 11-year-old in 1988 and LOVED IT!), and I always considered it a good E.T. knockoff. It wasn't until many years later -- decades, even -- that I read it's often considered one of the worst movies of all time (albeit a cult favourite), the Paul Rudd gag, the product placement and all that. Silvestri's score, however, shines on its own with lush orchestral passages (beware of mickey-mousing, though). It bugs me that I didn't pick up the limited Quartet(?) release a few years ago. Goes for big bucks now.

  8. I think it's refreshing that they went for something different. As a mere action film, it doesn't really stand out, but as far as action-horror goes, it's still a very strong player. That said, it's certainly not on the level of the first film. It's also very much of its time and very dated these days - which doesn't do it much harm, but it makes the original's feeling totally fresh still even more impressive. It's a fun and exciting entry in the series, and avoids the trap of just repeating the first film, but personally I prefer Alien³.

  9. Aliens BEWARE! UNPOPULAR OPINION! So I'm afraid I'm not as much of a fan of this one as a lot of people seem to be. I thought it was inferior in a lot ways to the first film. And I honestly don't get the "one of the best actions films of all time" statement. First for the good parts. Sigourney Weaver is fantastic. She partially saved this film for me. She has a lot of charisma and I thought it was great to see her character change from slightly passive towards a more dominant action oriented role. She sold all her action scenes and her final showdown with the queen was great. I also really like James Horner's score. Lot's of militaristic drums, it really made the heart pound. The Aliens themselves looked spectacular again, especially the queen at the end. But that is also the biggest thing that I didn't like. Because there were so many Aliens, and to me seemed pretty easy to kill, I didn't feel the threat as much as in the first film. The one Alien in the first film was really scary, but I never once felt that about them here. The action was good, but a bit bland at times. It was mostly just shooting without it changing to something else. I actually found myself looking at my phone quite a few times, something which didn't happen in the first film. I was completely invested in that film and it's characters, but I found a lot of the characters here annoying and I couldn't care less that they died. Beside Weaver, I really liked Lance Henriksen and I hope he returns in future installments, but other than that nobody really stood out to me. So yeah, I still think it's a good and solid film, but not the masterpiece some claim it to be. That title should really go to the first.

  12. One I haven't seen any mention of so far is my #1 favorite John Williams score: JANE EYRE (1970). The album is only a little over half an hour, and (similarly to the original E.T. album) only about half of that runtime is made up of cues actually recorded for and heard in the film, rather than unique "album arrangements" of themes and sequences. There is a LOT of unreleased music for this score and it deserves a complete release in better sound. I realize maybe people aren't talking about it because elements are supposed to be lost... but elements previously thought lost are found all the time! So I still hold out hope for an expansion someday (a re-recording if nothing else is possible!) Yavar

  15. I think Cameron making Avatar (and worse still, becoming insanely rich-er from it) has taken him down several pegs to many people (including me). And also just being James Cameron in public. But Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss are more home runs than any one film maker deserves. And I'm a Titanic fan. I don't know what I think of True Lies these days. That's the other thing: Aliens is damn scary! For some reason it's also gotten the rep of being the not scary one. I'll put the scene with Ripley and Newt trapped in the room with the facehugger against anything Scott came up with. It's certainly not MORE scary than Alien but it also isn't all that much LESS.

  16. 'Alien' and 'Aliens' work on completely different levels, so I don't even bother comparing them. But... What made the one, single Xenomorph in the first seem more threatening was the fact that they couldn't blow it up or otherwise make it bleed, for fear of its acid blood eating through the hull of the ship. No such problem in 'Aliens'... Plus, they're Marines this time, and equipped to bust some heads. But while easier to kill, the Xenomorphs are still threatening by their sheer numbers... Yeah, you'll get a few with your pulse rifle, but there are more behind that'll overrun and get you!

    THE BOYS

Gen V 1x05 Welcome to the Monster Club Wow! I did not see the twist in this episode coming. The fact that it was Cate mind-wiping people and not Rufus was a big surprise! I am really curious to learn what her motivations are, and also lorn more about this supposed virus (?) that the The Woods doctor wants to make to be able to subdue Marie. The embedded trackers was interesting too, does everybody have them or just the main characters? The best part of the episode was definitely the extended puppet massacre Sam has, that was great and finally bringing more of that unique stuff that makes The Boys world special. I hope there's more of that as we head in to the final 3 episodes!

  19. I hope this means they’re aiming for a Tanglewood summer 2024 premiere! Even better would be if they repeat what they did with ASM’s concerto; replay it that fall in Boston and record it there as well.

  20. This rings very, very true. I just teared up a bit (in a mostly good, appreciative way) on this rainy Sunday here while listening... On a way off-topic note: Almost everything seems to be offensive in some way or another nowadays, crazy human world ... which makes me a little bit sad inside ... but I have been making up for it in spades since June 1 2022...

  22. Sorry to hear it. She was great in TWIN PEAKS....had this weird, "veiled" sensuality about her, even in her late 50s at that time. But 91 is good innings!

  23. I listened through the whole concert, it was wonderful. I love the new material - Fifteen’s theme is something special IMO. Very influenced by “I Am The Doctor” - relentlessly pulsing, energetic and fun - but with a dangerous edge to it. It’s fresh and it’s very very interesting, shades of a mad marching band about it. Can’t wait to hear it in action.

  26. I know, it's crazy that we're 8 weeks away from another hour of new John Williams Indiana Jones music!
    1 point
  27. Indeed. Williams himself had to work by ear/from memory, when he wanted to make a three movement concert suite of the score I believe. So this would very likely need to be a Leigh Phillips style reconstruction by ear, unless written elements appear somewhere. But while we are wishing, I'll still cross my fingers that the original tapes show up instead, especially since Williams has apparently already nixed a potential new recording. I'm sure Williams would allow an expansion of his original recording if elements could be found, though. Yavar
