    JWFan turns 25!

JWFan was born 25 years ago today! Hard to imagine back then that the site would still be up and running two and a half decades later, let alone that the Maestro would still be active after having composed nearly thirty more film scores and a similar number of concert works, as well as conducting over 200 concerts including Vienna, Berlin, Milan and Japan! Dozens of his film scores have received perfect releases during all this time, providing fans with the confidence that many more will come in the future, while maintaining and further enhancing the collective appreciation and admiration for the music we all love and which will remain with us for the rest of our lives. The analysis and discussion of his work has reached such level of comprehensiveness and detail, that our forums have become an essential reference for fans and scholars, while fomenting the creation of fascinating projects that expand and deepen the study of the Maestro’s oeuvre and contribute to increasing its appreciation by future generations who, without doubt, will continue to ensure that his name is in the place it deserves in the history of music and cinema. Thank you, Mr. Williams, and thanks to all those who have contributed during this time to make the site such a wonderful place. Here’s to 25 more! PS. The following quoted post, written for this thread 10 years ago, provides a short summary of the origins of the site:

    JWFan turns 25!

I just saw the "25 years" story posted on JWFan's Twitter and thought I would drop in to say hi. I used to be active on the forum about 12 years ago. I just checked my profile and my last post was just a few days before my first child was born. Needless to say I was busy for a little while and never made it back here, other than to do research once or twice. Anyway, congrats on 25 years and maybe I'll dip my toe back into the forum a bit ...

  3. JOHN BRUCE YEH PERFORMS MIDWEST PREMIERE OF JOHN WILLIAMS' CONCERTO FOR CLARINET On Monday February 5 at 7.30pm Central Time, at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL, clarinetist John Bruce Yeh will perform the Midwest premiere of John Williams' Clarinet Concerto with the Chicago College of Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra conducted by Emanuele Andrizzi. The program also features music by Timothy Corpus and Howard Hanson. More info at roosevelt.edu/events/ccpa-symphony-orchestra-concert-2 Free performance––no reservations required. The event will also be livestreamed on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/live/Z2NaXuPU2Zk In addition to be on Artist Faculty at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, John Yeh is Assistant Principal Clarinet and Solo Eb Clarinet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and performed in several live concerts conducted by John Williams in the city. Williams' Clarinet Concerto premiered in 1991 and was composed for the LA Phil's then-Principal Clarinet Michele Zukovsky and has been rarely performed since then. Don't miss the chance to listen to a wonderfully buoyant concert work from Maestro Williams performed by a great virtuoso of the instrument. https://www.facebook.com/thelegacyofjohnwilliams/posts/pfbid0337cd7BCWDT1vX8xevotc339dp8rpuGrKdzyxcTjERLnpo2DnHiU46pyJvXHyaM8il Here it is!

    Star Wars Disenchantment

I don't know if I'm losing my mind, or undergoing some kind of spiritual awakening ("There has been an awakening, have you felt it?" - Supreme Leader Snoke), but Mattris is making more sense than ever before; I feel like I'm starting to see the light! ("The light... it's always been there. It will guide you." - Maz Kanata) I must go now and pray to my Darth Vader action figure to remove all doubt and scepticism, and grant me to see the full glory of Star Wars so that I may share its beauty with others ("Someday I will be the most powerful Jedi ever." - Anakin Skywalker)

  7. My current theory: Do not theorize on the motivations of Mattris, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no Mattris.

  8. The Post - John Williams I really love this score! It's very 90's Williams in drama mode. I of course love the string work in this score, but the more introspective moments with the piano are gorgeous. And the end credits suite is phenomenal!

  9. Amazing work, as always. One thing to add - I believe we have the cue title for "Helena’s Theme (For Violin And Orchestra)". It's "Helena's Theme (For Anne Sophie Mutter)", as seen at the start of this music video!

Massive congrats on what is genuinely a fabulous resource and such a well natured place. I myself have made real life friends from the site and met up with Williams nerds in Milan, Vienna, Berlin, and closer to home in London. Here’s to the next 25!

I contacted Ricard in the early 2000s and he was very welcoming, asked me to write a review of a JW concert I attended, or something like that, which I gladly did. Over the years - decades - this site remained my number one source of John Williams news, including his upcoming concerts. I’m safe to say that it’s the essential, definitive, quasi-official John Williams website. I feel honored to be a part of this community where I’ve met many interesting, lovely people whom I’ve never met in person. Here’s to 25 more years, and may the Maestro be “with us” all the way.

Congratulations, Ricard! You all deserve to celebrate. I've been coming here since 2000 (not as much as I'd like in recent years, though) and it's impressive how the site has developed as the hub for a vast, interconnected community but also as the definitive resource for all things John Towner Williams. As the nearly 92 year old maestro might say, long may you reign!

  18. Fucking hell, imagine being one of the session musicians blowing your lungs out trying to nail that piece and then you sit down and watch the film and you discover it’s been cut. 😅

The forum software changed a few times until the IPBoard version launched in May 2002. The old posts and accounts couldn't be imported into it, so everyone started anew that day.

I was there and I am so proud to say that after all of these years, I made my dreams come true, like to attend a John Williams concert. I am not active anymore on the forum, but I am still there. Congrats Ricard for all your achievements!

  32. Reading through the thread, my theory is that what Mattris calls 'enlightenment' is the result of smoking some pretty strong stuff to cope with the incomprehension at why the ST was so bad. Companies spend a fortune on anti-drug PSAs, hiring people like Michael Jordan, when they could save money and just link to this thread instead 😂

  39. Nah. There's all kinds of categories that refer to a variety of things. Plus apparently they're divided into "fields". The "Best Instrumental Composition" category is part of the "Production, Engineering, Composition & Arrangement" field, which encompasses these categories: Producer of the Year, Classical Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical Best Immersive Audio Album Best Instrumental Composition Best Engineered Album, Classical Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals So it's clearly a contrast to e.g. the two arrangement categories. But it's not necessarily mutually exclusive with categories from the other fields I suppose - except that there's clearly little overlap in Williams's case with things like "Best Bluegrass Album", "Best Rock Song", or "Song of the Year".
