  4. Yes, along with Elgar's Cello Concerto one of the best of the genre. Also very satisfying to perform. I played in the orchestra on this piece in a concert and was struck how well it feels and how exciting the ending bars were. I've noticed that with all Dvorak I've performed, it's very well executed even if you don't play much, each note has purpose. In contrast, Robert Schumann, I played throughout it but felt much of that served no purpose and wasn't exactly clear what I was needed for.

  6. McCreary wrote/used the following themes: Godzilla's Theme (Ifukube) Mothra's Song (Ifukube) Rodan Ghidora Monarch Serizawa's goodbye King Of The The Monsters (Overall Monster theme) That's 7 different themes Holkenborg wrote the following: Godzilla (uge brass statements) Kong And an electronic motif for Mega Godzilla. And as someone who likes GvK's score I am wondering why Holkenborg keeps saying that it was sooo hard to use the pre-existing themes. McCreary did it and I didn't hear him complain about it.

  7. that's great. I love that little segment and is my favorite unreleased bit of RotS. It really feels like an "ancient sith theme" and Wiliams should have developped it further.

  8. Jaw-droppingly good: I think this might overtake the New World symphony as my favorite Dvorak composition!

  9. I had a JW dream last night. I was tasked, together with a friend, to return something (I can't remember what) to JW's house. When we got there in the morning, he was still asleep, so I decided to browse through his CD collection. I found an album with something by Mendelssohn and also a suite from The Reivers on it and decided to borrow it. My friend had to leave, but I was still there when Williams got up at 9:30 and had breakfast. I think he offered me some. We talked a bit (I forget about what) and he told me come back next day. I was going to next morning, but something (can't remember) came up and I didn't get around to it until the afternoon. JW was still there, but I mostly talked a bit with my uncle, who was also living there (at that point, JW's house had a vague resemblance to my grandparents'). I think the dream was a bit more substantial, but that's all I could remember when I wrote it down this morning.

  11. I listened to the full score again after a few months and the music is just too good. There isn’t a single dull or uninteresting moment, and the way he weaves the themes together so seamlessly makes it feel like you’re listening to a concert work rather than something written to picture. This may be Williams’ most complex score, and definitely remains one of my favourites.

  12. Just listened to this too. While Sarde isn't great in my book like let's say John Williams, with easily recognizable melodies, he never fails to deliver good music.

Winner of two Oscars for the soundtracks of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and The Shape of Water (2018), Alexandre Desplat is today one of the major figures in film composition. From Paris to Hollywood, we could almost exhaust ourselves listing the prestigious collaborations that have already punctuated his career, from Jacques Audiard to David Fincher, from Wes Anderson to Stephen Frears, via Peter Webber or Guillermo del Toro... If the elite of the seventh art are fighting for it, it is because there is, in addition to a know-how which no longer needs to be demonstrated, a Desplat "paw", which imposes itself despite the scrupulous care that he focuses, above all else, on serving the world of the film entrusted to him. Capable of seducing, disquieting, bewitching in an ambiguous manner, intoxicating, galvanizing, Desplat's art merges with cinematographic narration, which does not prevent it, with its melodies in the bass register, its harmonies subtle and unstable its violent epic bursts, to remain eminently personal.

  15. Using the MVSEP and the one that Jay uses I was able to get the missing segment of "Palpatine's Big Pitch" more cleaned up. I'm happy with the results so here's my edit of the cue for you all. 3m4 Palpatine's Big Pitch.flac

  19. To be honest, they could have just included a 9th disc with suites from that album. But I suppose it is the same situation as when LLL or Intrada include the original album as a bonus. Either way, the price is good enough so it doesn't matter. The 2 disc set is a good assembly. And it turns out this announcement is not as random. Today is the Tolkien Reading Day, apparently. Karol

  21. MVSEP has a model, "BandIt" that puts out three tracks: Dialogue: at best, it's usually pretty clean. Music: Sometimes can get rid of 50-70% of the sfx, sometimes only 20-50%, depends, increasing the volume, and reducing the ducking can help. Effects: usually clean, sometimes some music can bleed through (string sustains, etc.) There is still some artifacts of course.

  25. There's one step. You go to the page in my main post, and drag an audio file into it. It spits out two tracks, a dialogue-only track and an everything-but-the-dialogue track. These tools remove dialogue, they don't remove sound effects, sadly.

  26. Haven't seen this posted (tho I may have missed it): Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga Concert Experience "23 Films. 11 years. 1 Universe." Hollywood Bowl Aug 30 and 31, 2024 https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/events/performances/2971/2024-08-30/marvel-studios-infinity-saga-concert-experience I dig most of the MCU scores and, while always thought it would be great to have an MCU concert at the Bowl, I pretty much gave up hope. So I was really excited to see the announcement.

  29. First 4 eppies of TWD: The Ones Who Live I'm pretty sure that Andrew Lincoln's main condition before returning to the Walking Dead universe was 'better writers' and a 'bigger budget'. And after 4 episodes, I can safely say that it seems that he got what he wanted. I'm just guessing of course. PS: There is still too much filler though, like with characters telling stories to each other and such.

  31. Sarde really knows his way around period tropes, and infusing them with various interesting, contemporary elements (other examples would be LE BOSSU or MANGECLOUS, for example). This 1994 effort is one of the best in that regard.

  32. According to Jon Broxton: So if the Intrada album follows through, we'll get the 30 minute concert in tracks 2-4 and a suite made out of cues from the actual score on track 1.

  35. Yes, for music you intend to listen to, it's best for either removal of very simple elements or to make an already polluted soundscape a bit more bearable, but the more it's got to do, the more distorted the result will be. I've come across a few instances where a speciality release presents a cue with its intended mix, and these models can almost entirely remove a synth or solo element that the film removed, but those are solo or frequency distinct elements. It doesn't seem to me to be at that point (yet) where a polluted rip with effects and dialogue can be magically rescued to just isolated music.

  37. Yeah, he wrote all that mediocre dull, energyless scores later like Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Return of the Jedi, Temple of Doom, Empire of the Sun, The Last Crusade, Home Alone, Hook, Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List. PS: Oh, it was a “joke”. God I hope so. It’s Sunday, I’m still half asleep.

    Carter Burwell

Like Rachel Portman, Burwell is not a fan of "wall-to-wall" scores, so directors really hire him to score the "things" which are not "shown in the movie". He does that pretty well. I also loved his score to that movie about Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, which is about, well, three billboards outside...
