  1. Decided to start a thread to list all of these since I've started documenting them. There are a surprising number of these available to the public. From ANH, everyone knows about takes 16-20 of 1m2 Star Wars on the 1997 set, and the alternate takes throughout the 1993 album are pretty well known as well (though not necessarily documented). But I was surprised to find that the 1997 and 2018 albums actually have alternate takes too! Here's a few that I've found already: 1M3 The War has an alternate take on the 1993 set from 2:15-2:58, the 1997/2018 sets have the correct one. 2M3 The Little People has an alternate take in a couple spots. The 1993 and 1997 sets both have the wrong take from 3:12-3:16, where the 2018 has the right one. However, the 1993 and 2018 sets have the wrong take for the ending Imperial statement, where the 1997 set has the correct one. 2M5 More Little People has an alternate mix for 1:25-end on the 1993 and 1997 sets, where the 2018 has the correct mix. I thought this was a different take originally but @Manakin Skywalker noticed that the 1997 and 2018 versions do indeed phase, so it must be a different mix and not a different take. I'll keep updating this thread as I find more. Feel free to include ones from other Star Wars scores, they don't have to just be ANH

  3. Hey guys, Been a while since I posted here, but I just thought I’d drop by to let you know of a soundtrack concert report site that I started recently. I’ve actually just posted my report of John Williams in Milan! Here’s the link: https://soundtracks-in-concert.com/concerto-straordinario-john-williams-2022/ You can also find these reviews (previously posted by me on JWFan): JW in Tokyo https://soundtracks-in-concert.com/deutsche-grammophon-125-years-special-gala-concert/ Boston pops tribute to JW (Tokyo) https://soundtracks-in-concert.com/boston-pops-on-tour-2023-john-williams-tribute-2023/ Thanks for looking 😎

  4. There is a widespread belief among the public that film and television media are monolithic entities, and their individual elements cannot be appreciated independently. I've come across some harsh criticism online. It's perplexing to see someone comment that they "would rather have blood in their stool." While the show's critique can be somewhat justified, the disdain for the music puzzles me. It's likely as lavish and well-crafted as any music produced today. Preferring Howard Shore's style is completely acceptable, but to dismiss this work as subpar is unfair. I enjoy both regularly and see no need to pit them against each other. Karol

  5. Yes. For a soundtrack collector there are many reasons to get this box apart from wanting to listen to every minute of the music. This score was one of the best of the year and this box represents in so many ways what soundtrack fans would like to have from their favourite francise score. The only thing which makes me wonder, I would expect that this is something especially popular under soundtrack fans who loved the show. But I just remember comments from Tolkien hardcore fans complaining about the terrible show. For those people I would expect the OST being more than enough. Question for me: Can I love the complete score and hate the show at the same time? By the way, I really liked the show. And the music.

  12. A facebook friend of mine said that this was Kilar's Dracula 2, a masterpiece, the best score for a TV production ever. I am not sure if it holds up to that title, but it sure was great, with Dracula-like chorus pieces, minimalistic of course as always with Kilar's music. In Kilar mode again. The vocal theme was sublime.

  13. No doubt there's alternate material - we know of one minor one which is a track later on in the series where he recorded Halbrand's theme iirc, with two solo instruments to avoid clashing with dialogue. However, given that with a different release mentality this box could easily have been a highlights release (with maybe half of each score), the fact that it has nearly everything heard in the show is more than good enough for me.

  14. I've been watching this show and I really enjoyed the first season, and the soundtrack album was just released! Some beautiful stuff in there, especially the main theme by Satoru Kosaki, that plays in many of his cues. Kevin Penkin's contributions are also nice, but my favorite tracks are definitely in the first part of the album. I absolutely recommend both the show and the soundtrack. Lyrical, cute and emotional, and one of the biggest surprises of the year so far! Also, Hiroyuki Sawano's score for Solo Leveling was released, but I found it a bit underwhelming, relying on the same techniques he perfected in Attack on Titan, but without the emotional impact they had in there. The OP song is awesome as is DARK ARIA, and some cues are nice (big fan of part 8 of the symphonic suite), but overall is a bit of a disappointment.

  15. Didn't he say they recorded something around 9 hours of music? If you are to eliminate all the repetition between compilation and episode albums, you'd end up with about 8 hours and 4 minutes (or tiny bit less if you were to remove anything but the first 40 seconds of Nolwa Mahtar and Shore's title theme). So there might be still an hour missing. To be honest, I can't see myself wanting more, sort of like I never really demanded the expansions for CR sets. Karol

  16. My favourite is THE TOWERING INFERNO, followed closely by EARTHQUAKE. Whatever one says about the film, some of the shots in ST:TMP, are jaw-droppingly beautiful.

  17. Meteor's original SFX director got fired and his work up to then was unusable, so others were brought in to reshoot the sequences with whatever was left in the budget. They were also fired, and again others were brought in to finish the effects with the (now presumably diminished even further) remaining budget cash and with 2 months to go to the release date.

  19. Yeah, there was something different about the animation in this episode and that was really showcased in their fight. Pabu without a sunny sky was a big red herring for me as I thought this was the one where the Empire gets there... sounds like I was an episode too early. I have no clue how this show is gonna end, but this episode made me contemplate the possibility of Omega parting ways with the Batch (sure, if the Batch even survives). Will Omega be able to use the Force (in a traditional way, as I'm sure she already uses it unknowingly) by the end of the series? Lots of questions and a lot to happen yet, this was basically a calm before the storm.

  20. Episode 9 x The Harbinger Loved this!! Asajj Ventress has always been one of my favourite characters, so I loved seeing her here. Her fight scene with the Bad Batch, was extremely well done. Great choreograhpy and animation. I'm impressed by the animation each episode, it's just so inctedibly good. If you compare this to the Clone Wars film, it's remarkable! There was also some really great music in here. The statement of the bad batch theme during the fight was great and there were some really beautiful moments with Ventress & Omega. Next week 2 episodes! Let's see how quick the story is gonna move

  24. John Williams - Minority Report (LLL) This listen convinced me that this is one of Johnny's masterpieces. The blend of brooding introspection, unreachable memories of happier times, thrilling action and chase music, and vocals crying for justice is unparalleled in any other scores I've heard. I love how you can tell from listening that this fits right in between his prequel and Harry Potter scores, and is very post-AI pre-War of the Worlds, yet doesn't feel like it steals from any of those, its its own thing. And its fantastic from start to finish, especially the main program of the LLL edition. I forgot how much I like the alternate openings to The Crime and Freezing Water, so I'll probably swap those with their main program counterparts next time around. What a score!

  25. Well, let's see... this was three days after my 9th birthday. It was a Friday, so the party was probably on the next day. We were living in a very small town during those days, which was wonderful for a kid, so they turned the local party room into a movie screening room, where they exhibited the recently released DVD for HP and the Philosopher's Stone. That because they saw that I liked movies and really liked Harry Potter, so they did a thematic party. I still remember when the movie begun and the John Williams theme over the Warner logo. I think I may have more memories of that than my actual session at the "official" movie theater six months before. Warner wouldn't like that if they knew it though I remember that those old DVDs had a lot of warnings against "public exhibitions" of the movie and etc.

  28. I've made some estimates before and I reckon it's around 5 minutes of proper unreleased cues or prominent sections. No doubt there is a bit more than that when considering edits to shorten tensions/sustains/etc, but in terms of music that's creatively important I don't think there's much at all.

  31. I don't find myself drawn to the complete albums that often, but there are a few set pieces and moments that are abridged or not presented properly on the OST. Plus when you like a score as much as me (and many) you want the entire thing even if it doesn't get a huge amount of playtime. I really didn't want to pay £80 for a bunch of downloaded files so while this set is 30% or so more, it feels like what we get (all the music plus the OST and the book) makes it worth it, and those who just have the downloads don't feel left out with any content exclusive to this box.

  32. Yes, I've mostly stuck to the suite myself. But partly I think that's because it's an album condensation of the full scores that's very long on its own, but at the same time presents only a fragment of the full scores. My hope is that the complete scores might present a better listening experience on their own by being both shorter and more coherent individually than the longer full season album.

  33. A JNH concert sounds great, but clicking at the link, only post-millennium scores are mentioned in the blurb, which I (for the most part) find underwhelming. If this had focussed on the 80s and 90s stuff, I'd be totally envious of anyone able to attend.

  34. Bond and a meteor? They already did that, and it apparently didn't turn out too well. That reminds me, one of the ideas that was mooted for Zorin's eeeevil scheme in AVTAK was him manipulating the course of Halley's Comet.

  37. TPM is my favorite Prequel movie. First SW movie I saw in theaters. I didn't give a shit about SW at the time, but I loved that movie so much. Sure I didn't understand a lick of the politics, but it had Anakin and Darth Maul. I remember loving the concept of Darth Vader as a kid (stay mad Prequel haters) It kinda blew my brain. also Star Wars Episode 1: Pod Racer for N64 was rented and re-rented from Blockbuster so many times they might as well let me own it. That said....haven't seen this movie in forever...but the Prequels are so fun to go back to, unlike the DT. Wanna know why? Cause ultimately, even with all the warts, they are a labor of love.
