  1. John Williams and the Music of Star Wars – A Further Step Into a Larger Musical World An exploration of John Williams's music for the popular film series, with a particular focus on the latest instalment, The Last Jedi, by Maurizio Caschetto An engaging, thoughtful and enlightening read. TLJ Score Wishes

Yes, parts of TLJ feel influenced by a temp track, but Williams always makes it feel like its own thing unique to the film at hand, even if there are inspirations at play. The exact same argument could be leveled towards the original Star Wars, and the many (obvious) influences from which Williams drew upon. After all, the original film had a temp track of its own -- it just wasn't a temp track of existing Star Wars music. And yet, it's probably one of the best film scores ever written.

  5. Williams is overrated anyway, so maybe it's for the best. Why not start over with Leonard Rosenman?

  6. It's fantastic that each score in the original series is so unique, right in line with how unique each film is. Pretty extraordinary, especially in this age of homogenized sameness we're living through from sequel to sequel.

  7. Apparently the "best available source" for these was an MP3 rip of the 1997 SE's. They've compiled the OST edits from those.

  10. The "recovery vault"in Disk Drill is an added feature for existing users that just provides extra protection in recovering deleted files. It's not necessary for the program to work (I never used it). When my hard drive crashed, I just ran the program and it recovered the vast majority of my FLAC and ALAC files. In a few cases, some of the recovered file names were somewhat mangled, and depending on how much work the program has to do, it can take a while to run, but in my case it worked. Your case may be a little different in that it sounds like you have physical damage, but it might be worth a try. If I recall it even allows you to search and prioritise recovery for specific file types..i.e. .mp4, .mp3, .doc, etc. Yes, to Jurassic Shark you listen. Stop using that hard drive immediately if you haven't already done so. You didn't say exactly what kind of damage occurred, just that it was "ruined". Does you computer recognise the drive at all?

  11. My last Jaws video! Music as heard in the film doesn't kick in until about 2 minutes in! All of "Quint Meets His End" and the first 40 seconds of "Blown to Bits" went unused in the final mix. As always, it's a bit difficult to know if you've lined up unused score correctly with the film, especially since it's impossible to know if the scene was even slightly re-edited after recording the cue. Well, this is my best guess!! I think it was right to cut the "Quint Meets His End" music, but I love every second of "Blown to Bits" set to picture. Quint Meets His End / Blown to Bits

  12. Yeah. Everything on my Mac, including my iTunes music library (lossy) gets backed up to Time Capsule every day. Then I have my archival lossless music files on a separate HD, which is backed up to the cloud. And I have my movies on another HD which has a physical backup (too massive to back up to the cloud). I'm playing with fire though. My Mac stopped recognising my Time Capsule a few weeks ago, so no backups since then and I can’t be bothered to sort it yet. Very normal, depending on how hard the hit was. And Norwegian's love their hard wood floors.

  16. Avengers: Infinity War - Still processing this, but wow just wow. It's rare to see a superhero film get me so emotional. Thanos was also a fantastic villain. I'd say more, but I think people should just see the film. I enjoyed it a lot. - 8.5 / 10

  17. I'm kinda burnt on this. I give the directors and writers credit for keeping the film fairly balanced on the characters, but it's hard to keep the stakes high when Marvel keeps leaning heavily on the shared universe concept. It kinda blurs together whenever the scattered Avengers (and Guardians) are battling Thanos and his three goons. But I fucking hated the ending. They said it wasn't supposed to be a 2-parter and stand on its own... they lied. And it was hard feeling most of the character deaths (like Gamora) since it's likely most of them will be resurrected in the fourth film. One of the most overrated comic book films out there. It's a shame since Black Panther was a refreshing palette cleanser.

  18. I like working on isolated score videos! See the Williams edition of the thread here! http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/28480-disco-stus-isolated-score-videos-john-williams-edition/ But hey, I also like film composers who are not John Williams! This thread is for those people. Back to the Future Part III (Alan Silvestri) Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (James Horner) Willow

  21. Finished Kingdom Come: Deliverance after 92 hours in just under 2 months. The ending was pretty disappointing (though we know there will be expansions, DLCs and I think a sequel, too). Overall, it's a fantastic achievement in RPGs and historical accuracy, especially for the first game of a small, independent Czech studio, I had immense fun once I got past some initial clunkiness and a few bugs.

  23. I recommend not opening the hard drive unless you are absolutely sure you know what you're doing. Are you an engineer? Do you have a clean room to prevent dust from entering and contaminating the platters? It's one thing if you can find a video or document that says the problem is likely a loose cable inside that you can reseat. But if the drop damaged the motor or dislodged an arm or the sensor, you may be damaging a repairable drive into a higher price range. I had an internal hard drive fail over ten years ago from a power surge from not using a surge strip. I thought I could replace the controller circuit board and keep going. I never actually tried to find the exact make and model of drive to do the repair though. But basically, if all your valuable data is on only one external hard drive, then that's not a backup. That's your primary storage. You always need another external drive in a safe place that you don't use, to prevent disasters like this.

    Headphones

The 712 have a slightly smaller sound stage, in exchange for a bit more oomph and a smoother, darker sound. The 702 sound like the orchestra members are sitting farther apart, and the trumpets are shined to a mirror finish for God, but bass is basically a token. Both are fantastic, but the K712 excels beyond just orchestral music, so it’s a better all-arounder.

    Headphones

@Alexcremers headphones shown in this video are actually K7XX. I'm not sure what this guy is on about, you can see it on the actual can. Apparently they're almost exactly the same as K712 which I've got but people seem to be confused as to what this model is supposed to be. I think it doesn't have coiled cable and is also a limited edition version available exclusively via Massdrop made in China (and not Europe). K701 (white) and K702 (black) are older models (although they apparently have revised versions too with K712 memory foam pads). The difference between 701 and 712, other than colour, is the band resting on your head (it's padded on the old one and smooth on K712). As for the sound differences, I couldn't tell you as I'm not really an expert but I suppose they're all great in their own ways. The general "consensus" is that K712 are supposed to be probably tiny bit "bassier" (not that any of them are really are bass-heavy) and "smoother" but even there the opinions seem to vary... What I find really funny a lot of the people seem to seek the original run of K712 because they're made in Austria whereas the later editions were made in Slovakia. It's supposed to be more premium or whatever but, as many Europeans will know, there's like...80 km (49 miles) between those? I'm sure Slovakians are more than capable of putting it all together given they use probably the same equipment and, who knows, probably even the same people. But consumers are funny like that. Karol

  31. I went to see Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets this evening at the Royal Albert Hall, the first of five performances over the weekend. It was fantastic! The BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Justin Freer was on excellent form, played the entire end credits music and was also accompanied by the English Chamber Choir. I had only seen the film once before and that was long enough ago that I did not remember much of it, so it was nice to be able to enjoy it and reacquaint myself with the music. I had forgotten what a lovely theme Fawkes the Phoenix is, I really must play it more often. Here is a photo I took at the end, with the mostly female choir top right behind the trumpets and trombones.

  34. What a wonderful evening! It's just a thrill to see John Williams in person conducting his great music. And I have to say, the performance of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was such amazing. Also Richard Kaufman did a great job. Now I'm looking forward to the next concerts Great to be in Chicago these days!!

  41. Excellent program! I had no idea that "The Fury" was a tribute to Herrmann. To me it sounds so much like vintage Williams but with this understanding, I do hear a few Herrrmannisms but it is all through JW's sophisticated dialect.
