  1. That would be cool, but my guess is that Han's theme will be in a minor key unlike the Asteroid Field's opening melody, which is major-based. It's interesting to compare good-guy themes from the OT and ST so far in terms of whether they are based on a major or minor tonic, especially since the ST is closely modeled on the OT: Original Trilogy - Luke's Theme - Major - Leia's Theme - Major - Rebel Fanfare - Major - Force Theme - Minor - Han Solo and the Princess - Major - Yoda - Major - Ewoks - Major - Luke and Leia - Major Sequel Trilogy (so far) - Rey's Theme - Minor - Poe's Theme - Minor - March of the Resistance - Minor - Luke in Exile - Minor - Desperation (of the Resistance) - Minor - Rose - Major There's a very clear trend of having the primary good-guy themes in the sequel trilogy almost entirely minor (only Rose's Theme is major, no doubt due to her childlike innocence) whereas in the original trilogy, they are very much the opposite - almost all major (only the Force Theme is minor, no doubt due to its function as a "struggle" theme). This change from major to minor is probably due to the change in the tone of films nowadays. So many films of the 80s have an optimistic tone whereas today they are much darker and in many ways pessimistic, and I think Williams is reflecting this trend in his music for the heroes. Anyway, I thought this would be interesting to share. So yes, I'm guessing Han's Theme will be in a minor key.

  2. I can´t tell if this is irony, but if not: Do you know all states in Germany like Bavaria or Hessen? All Kantons of Switzerland like Aargau or Schwyz? This would be the equivalent to the states of the USA.

  4. Just take an old adventure theme, warp it into a minor key, and you get the heroic scoundrel:

  6. The thing that intrigues me the most about this particular theme is that what the hell will it end up sounding like? Major, minor? It can't be something like the Raiders march and I can't picture it sounding like any of JW's previous cowboy themes. Something like The Adventures of Mutt is out of the question, as Tintin's motif... So what the hell can it even sound like? The closer thing that I can picture is something similar to Poe's theme, but we already have that... Gah! Hopefully so much speculation won't end up being a dissapointment.

  7. Lol, I never said that you couldn't have a differing opinion. It's just that TPM is objectively the inferior film, on pretty much every level of filmmaking. And that's a fact.

  9. Since Poe is basically Han Solo reincarnated, it would make sense to make a similar theme for Han.

  12. Han was also shown with a woman during the Cantina sequence in a deleted shot. I don't know if a love theme would be appropriate for a womanizer, though. I'm guessing it will sound somewhat heroic. I guess it depends on how's he portrayed in the film... a goofball, scoundrel, hero?

  14. Perahia's Beethoven is great, especially the fourth! I like his Mozart concertos too, but in some of the concertos there's something strange with the recording. I think I read somewhere it has something to do with being early digital. Brendel is also good in Mozart. And I see you have Szell, my favourite conductor! I'd wish they would re-release all his recordings in remastered sound.

  16. Oh, don't worry. I can't tell you how many times I've bought a DVD thinking I don't have it, only to discover I do! Nowadays I keep an Excel spreadsheet on my phone with my collection listed, so that I can refer to it when I see something I may want to buy.

  20. I got to the point where I'd open an album folder and couldn't tell you what it would sound like because I'd never listened to it. Unless you make a concerted effort to listen to a different score every day, there just isn't enough time to listen to everything once a collection reaches a certain point.

  24. Yes terrific analysis from Doug Adams here. I wonder if there is more to this than just the podcast ? A new book perhaps? or A new book to coincide with the definitive reissues of all the 4 film scores from the Indy saga just in time for the 5th Indy movie.... now that would be something to behold ?

  25. I'd want JNH or Howard Shore. Somehow I don't see Cameron going for a Zimmerite. I expect Simon Franglen. What if the score was composed by JNH and Simon Franglen together with a small army of orchestrators?

  29. FYC 18 The Last Jedi (5:02) OST equivalent: 18 The Last Jedi (3:04) The opening of the FYC track (0:00-1:15) is an unreleased cue that covers the Resistance following the crystal critters into the caves, Rey hovering over and scanning for their location, and then both parties arriving at opposite sides of the stone-piled exit. The rest of the FYC track is roughly the same as the OST track, and covers Kylo and Luke's final showdown. The FYC track is longer though, because the OST appears to be microedited in a few spots - there's a section microedited out of the OST at 0:15 that is intact in the FYC from 1:30-1:53, then another section microedited out of the OST at 0:22 that is intact in the FYC from 2:00-2:09, and finally compare OST 1:26-1:30 to FYC 3:14-3:22 and OST 1:45-1:48 to FYC 3:38-3:44. So overall, I'd again recommend just using the entire FYC track and ignoring the OST track in a complete edit.

    TWIN PEAKS

The Man with the Grey Elevated Hair (29:40) Fly-on-the-wall footage intermixed with some weird, artsy narration from god knows who. But lots of good footage of working out scenes in the woods - Jerry Horne on the run, Cooper rescuing Laura in Part 17, the cops finding Naido in the woods, Diane and Cooper in the hotel in Part 18, Sherilyn/Audrey learning her character motivations. It's amazing to see how Lynch works with actors. Guiding the actress who plays Naido in exactly how he wants her to move. Telling Jerry Horne that he "turns [his] head and sees the thing, and then panics," and he asks later what "the thing is," and Lynch replies "anger." Lynch losing his shit that Washington didn't have quick-set plaster for him to mold the golden circle in the woods, and they only had plaster of paris. Sheryl Lee and Kyle McLachlan seeing themselves in their Fire Walk With Me costumes for the first time. Lots of really neat stuff.

  34. All factors considered: 1. The Edge 2. King Solomon's Mines 3. The Haunting 4. Chain Reaction 5. Rudy KSM just has too many bravura parts to be rated below the others, whereas Rudy's saccharine americana earns far less reward points for either originality or compositon.

  35. But we do have the unedited cues. They have showed up in a bunch of places such as the EE DVD box set (as menu music or behind documentary features), video games (there have been A LOT of LOTR video games), and IIRC some finally showed up on the Hobbit DVD/BDs. Faleel has an entire thread where you can hear the original unedited cues: http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/23525-the-lord-of-the-rings-score-restored-unused-howard-shore-music-restored-to-picture/ It's not an opinion that the FOTR CR set replicates the tracking PJ utilized in the final cut of the film, its a definitive unquestionable fact. TTT and ROTK CRs do not do any of that, however; They went back and grabbed the unedited session cues to make those.

  42. After 2 weeks or so of listening to TLJ, TFA is probably my overall favorite of the two simply because of the new themes and the end credits suite. Plus, I fell in love with TFA immediately while TLJ took a bit longer for me appreciate it overall. Also, while I think Rebellion is Reborn is excellent, I'm still disappointed Williams didn't create concert arrangements for each theme. I feel if he could expand the Fawkes and Chamber of Secrets themes, he could have done the same for the Rose and Luke/Island themes instead of combining them. But the new thematic material... , especially Holdo's/Desperation theme. I do, however, feel the action music in TLJ is far superior and more suspenseful than TFA. Granted, TFA didn't have as many exciting action sequences and was definitely lacking suspense but that's more of a complaint in regards to the film.

I am looking forward to Clemensen's review (for my money the single best reviewer of film scores out there).
