  1. Saving Private Ryan - chronological playlist using the LLL release This is very much a score for the hottest part of the Summer for me, it gets a lot of play every July. I guess because that's when the film originally came out.

  2. No, Anne Sophie, it seems your PR people handled that incident rather well.

  3. AOTC is filled with great music. Also lack of action music doesn't equal boring. Some of my favorite material from AOTC is the quieter stuff. AOTC does have a ton of action music though, even though only a portion of it appears on the album.

  4. The 20th anniversary edition of the World Soundtrack Awards will be celebrated in a special way. Adapted to current circumstances, this year's WSA will be an online edition, livestreamed from Kinepolis Ghent, where the ceremony itself will take place. In this way you'll have the chance to enjoy the award ceremony and concert from everywhere around the world (and in a safe and corona-proof manner). The WSAwards will be the closing event of Film Fest Ghent, and will take place on 24 October 2020. On the occasion of this 20th anniversary, we are delighted to welcome back Alexandre Desplat, record holder of the World Soundtrack ‘Film Composer of the Year’ Award; Gabriel Yared, guest of honour at the very first edition of the WSA; and Michael Abels, ‘Discovery of the Year’ 2019. Their music, performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and Vlaams Radiokoor, conducted by Dirk Brossé, will be prerecorded and will be part of the livestream. To be able to follow the livestream, you can already register via www.worldsoundtrackawards.com. Following the livestream will be free. More info on this year's edition can be found here.

  5. It is very fitting that the clip was posted to Twitter by a Padre Ramirez. Tuco's brother, perhaps?

  8. Return to Tatooine is one of my favourites for that stunning mystery theme, it's so mesmerizing.

  9. RETURN OF THE JEDI underrated? Not by me. Over the years, it's crept up to become my favourite Star Wars score. I've posted before, and I'll post, again: everything from BROTHER/SISTER, FATHER/SON onwards, is sublime.

  10. Apparently, this is the last thing Morricone ever wrote: Karol

  12. I've never seen this before - a pretty neat music videos for The Hateful Eight. Karol - who always gets a good chuckle out of the fact Kylo Ren theme appears in this score (and is heard at around 8:30 into the second video)

  15. I uploaded my own DVD rip of the great, essential 1958 televised performance of Appalachian Spring by Martha Graham and her company. Hopefully it doesn't get removed or something for copyright. For a decade this performance has only been on Youtube as a 4 part upload with a really disconcerting, choppy framerate. So now at least it's up in good quality and in one single video.

  19. I’d like some new 20th anniversary documentaries to go with this. I’m pretty happy with the current Blu-ray sets (not that I won’t buy these anyway).

    Ethereal cues from JW

'Watching the Skies' - Close Encounters of the Third Kind Could not find a clip of it on YouTube, seems like nobody has uploaded the complete LLL release. So hopefully you have that release to listen to it. That cue is the definition of 'too perfect for this world.'

  23. None of Morricone's scores are more popular than his Spaghetti Westerns. Once Upon A Time In America is well regarded because it is a brilliant score. Zimmer's favorite, actually.

  26. Return to Tatooine is one of my favorite Star Wars tracks, and I'm being totally serious. Also, I find the complete score to Return of the Jedi more digestible than Empire Strikes Back, though there are definitely cues where they were designed to support the film foremost.

  34. Seconded on this one, a terrific score that is well worth exploring. The Moutain has terrific although the ecstatic writing in The Golden Door is absolutely spine tingling. Need to revisit this one. Is it me or are quite a lot of Morricone's scores fairly poor, recording wise, even some of the more recent ones aren't as good as might be hoped. The older ones can be very hit and miss. Given how particular he was, it's surprising he wasn't more fastidious with the quality of the actual recording/mixing.

  35. Oh no. I've become a massive fan of him, especially during the last year. Attended two concerts, began buying CDs. He was an amazing musician, who silenced the academia, which used to treat film music as a lesser art.

  36. This is awful. Having said that, he had an amazingly long life and career that most composers can only dream of. And most striking musical imagination. You cannot say he didn't achieve anything there there is to be achieved in this field. Rest in piece. Karol

  37. It's good that you weren't in charge of Joker then. Tod Phillips' approach clearly struck a chord with critics and audiences. Perhaps they did pick up and appreciate its gritty social commentary.

  38. Seven Years in Tibet by John Williams: Revisited this during the weekend. It remains such a beautiful and powerful amd melodic score with interesting Far Eastern stylistic influences although nearly always translated through the Western symphony orchestra, just like Williams did later with Memoirs of a Geisha. The album is superbly put together with a coherence and flow of its own compared to the relatively low-key mix and treatment the music receives in the film itself, the album full of alternate and unused pieces alongside the cues that actually made it to the film. Funnily the movie has about 50 minutes of score while the CD contains 56 minutes of unique music (sans the reprised end credits and Tibetan source music), but still doesn't contain the full score as the movie contains several revised pieces left off the OST. Nevertheless the album is a terrific one with a great dramatic arc and is further elevated by Yo-Yo Ma's indelible and always elegantly soulful cello solos. I am glad I took a deeper listen of this one, just to be reminded of how wonderful piece of dramatic music it is.

  39. Rogue One aired here in the UK on a non-subscription channel last night, I did wonder how that was allowed in these Disney+ times. It was never going to be as good as Man On Wire. I don't know why they bothered.

  40. The statement by Morricone has class and grace as well, and is a little more personal: https://www.fpa.es/en/princess-of-asturias-awards/laureates/2020-ennio-morricone-and-john-williams.html?texto=declaracion&especifica=0 "solitude", work "ethic", "constant dedication" are indeed also words that we have seen applied to Williams.

  41. Like Pallaeon I'm a little confused by your question. In the key of C, the (major) 7 would be B... I'm not sure why you would want to refer it as a downward minor second (?), especially if it puts you at risk of thinking of the actual second scale degree by mistake (D in the case of C). Is there a certain organizational hurdle you're trying to get through? Oh we know where he got the D!

  42. Its not Han's theme; and that motif isn't the Millennium Falcon theme, either! The theme in the subject of the thread is the love theme of Princess Leia and Han Solo. It applies to Han only insofar as the love story is concerned. If anything, it speaks of the relationship more from Leia's perspective: its just a variation on her own theme, really. I would argue that the timing of this suite's release, given Fisher's passing, proves more than anything that its not Han's theme. Especially seeing how Williams is writing a new theme for the character's own film. The other motif is the Rebel Fanfare. Its the motif of the rebel alliance. But Williams isn't very strict in the application of this motif, so it often ended up being used as a generally "triumphant" piece of music, and coincided with the Falcon entering and escaping the Death Star as just that - triumphant music that prefigures and eventually celebrates our heroes escape of the Death Star. Its used along those lines in the sequel trilogy thus far, because the resistance has its own melodic identification.
