  2. What I find interesting is that Johnny is respected more among classical musicians/conductors than among classical music critics. Some of the most famous soloists and conductors have performed his music and have appreciated it. I think that is more important than critics writing good reviews about his works.

  3. The Joker left no impression on me after seeing the film and I've never felt compelled to hear it again. It's a score that has no narrative structure, but instead fits the scenes and then expires its use beyond them. I don't enjoy using the term 'overrated', but this is one score I can safely say fits that category and has been heaped undeserved praise by organizations who don't give a fig about anything other than popular opinion.

  5. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, the score, was not a favourite of mine in the 90s, but has grown on me considerably as I've grown older and fonder of slower and more textural landscapes. However, not so much as to beat the pastoral beauty of his greatest score in the last 14 years. That is, at least in terms of soundtrack listening. For music-in-context, it might be the other way around. Film-wise, it's not even a competition. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is one of the greatest war movies of all time. WAR HORSE is a decent, but ultimately flawed melodrama.

  9. Associated Press to critic: we are going to need a negative review of John Williams. Critic to AP: then you are going to need a better critic than me. AP to critic: I know, but they are all dead. Happy Thanksgiving.

  10. Sorry, didn't see that! Awesome! Now I have something to look forward to tonight. And here I thought the only exciting thing about today would be a huge meal. EDIT: Nevermind, I'll be asleep then. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  13. A pity they didn't commission a new Christmas carol by JW for the cover CD - or at least a new arrangement of Star of Bethlehem or Ring the Hogwarts Bell. ;-) Oh well, The Shepperds' Farewell by Berlioz will have to do for now.

  16. @Manakin Skywalker we're talking about creating fantasy versions of the credits with "The Adventures of Han" included, not just how to segue from "To Tatooine". P.S. After further consideration, I've moved my v1 from earlier into my own custom Solo playlist, replacing the "real" end credits. I was just doing these for the fun of it, but I think that one does a really nice job of wrapping up the score! I'm still keeping the full concert suite at the beginning too like the OST, though.

It's Zemeckis' next film https://deadline.com/2020/01/pinocchio-robert-zemeckis-to-direct-1202840440/ https://deadline.com/2020/08/tom-hanks-geppetto-pinocchio-movie-robert-zemeckis-disney-1202998669/ And it's already confirmed that Silvestri is scoring on the GSA website https://www.gsamusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Silvestri_Alan-14.pdf That link reveals the songs will be co-composed with Glen Ballard (presumably the 1940 songs will be in there too) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4593060

  21. I follow the deals more or less each year. So far this year, I've used three of the deals to buy the following albums, all of which have been on my to-get list for quite some time: Chandos: Testament: Simax: I also used some of their regular deals to fill up the orders.

  32. An option for some people might be to check if their local library has a magazine service. I just checked and I was able to subscribe to this magazine from my local library. Newsagents here in Australia import a lot of British magazines so I will be on the lookout for the printed version too!

  33. This might not be the right choice, but I never listen to The Adventures of Han. So the track arrangement of the Deluxe works for me! For reasons that I can't figure out TAOH sounds like a Williams piece that he decided to use for Solo. But when Powell gets it and arranges it it feel like Han. It certainly feels like the Han we see in Solo. I loved that movie and I'm disappointment we don't appear to be getting a sequel. I'm loving the Deluxe edition but I still can't say that I know all the nooks and crannies like I do the Original Trilogy or Superman so I'm not entirely certain what was missing other than some delightful Williams quotes. I have to admit the music was mixed so low that I never realized that they were playing Duel of the Fates when Darth freaking Maul was on screen!

  38. Mike Matessino also mentioned on @TownerFan’s Legacy of John Williams podcast that he was working on some future JW expansions, but he didn’t expect any would be ready in time for Black Friday. Also making a JW title less likely: all except one title will have a run of less than 3,000 units, and excepting some TV scores, every JW title released by LLL has had a quantity of at least 3,000.

  41. Yea what makes it so good, and worthwhile to have, is the completely different energy it has compared to the one from the first movie. The first movie was pushing the magical aspects, while this is more streamlined and adventurous, more in-line with the rest of the Azkaban score

It also makes sense to watch the Missing Pieces after the film before starting S3, because the series references some things that were mostly cut from the film and feature more prominently in the deleted scenes assembly.
